Israeli press review: Fears Iran is prepared for a long war

Israelis wary of attritional war While many Israelis are celebrating Saturday night's US attack on three Iranian nuclear sites, fears are growing that Iran will drag Israel into a war of attrition where ballistic missiles will be fired for several months, according to an Army Radio report. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that his country 'will not be dragged into a war of attrition, but we will not stop this historic operation before we achieve our goals'. On Monday morning, missiles were fired again from Iran and a strategic facility of the Israel Electric Corporation near the southern city of Ashdod was hit. "Fifteen missiles were launched. This proves that Iran's launch capability has not really weakened, and they still have hundreds of mobile and stationary launchers, although the Air Force has destroyed more than 200 of them so far," journalist Yossi Melman wrote on X in response. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters 'It's a war of attrition in every respect.' According to Army Radio, senior military officials have said Israel will increase attacks on Iran to push Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei into a corner. Former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert expressed reservations about the possibility that Iran would surrender in the wake of the Israeli and American attacks. "The notion that a series of pre-emptive military strikes can bring a nation of over 90m people to its knees… is arrogant and unrealistic," he wrote in the Economist. "Iran will not collapse or shatter, even after the exceptionally painful blow of the American attack. And remember, it still possesses a formidable arsenal of long- and short-range missiles." Israelis flee Tel Aviv Tel Aviv has been a ghost town since the hostilities with Iran began. The Israeli Home Front Command has ordered only essential workers to work in the commercial capital over the past week. "There is a feeling among Tel Avivians that the Iranians are aiming mainly at Tel Aviv. Therefore, many Tel Avivians have left the city," a resident told Channel 12 News. "A few days ago, I went down to the shelter of our building, and there were 10 people at most, out of a building of 12 apartments.' Many buildings in the city do not have a protected space or shelter, which has prompted people to leave after witnessing the destructive capabilities of Iranian missiles. "Most of the people in our building have left the city. Both young couples and young families,' another resident told Channel 12 News. Others choose to remain and seek shelter offered by the municipality. "We have an underground parking lot in a nearby building, which we go to when there is a siren, so within a minute and a half we are there, protected," said a resident. "We don't see a reason to leave." Iranian missiles cause extensive damage Since Iran responded to Israeli attacks by firing missiles at Israel, extensive damage has been endured across the country. According to Israeli media estimates, after only six days of war the damage caused to property all over the country is estimated at more than 2 billion shekels ($576m). Since then, missiles have only caused more damage. There is concern in Israel that many citizens whose property or homes were damaged will remain without compensation for many months. According to a report in The Marker, the Property Tax Authority is under extreme workload pressures due to the heavy damage. "Given that thousands of apartments have already been evacuated of their residents across the country, probably close to 5,000 apartments, and appraisers have to move between them and decide their fate, the wait for an appraiser could take days or even weeks," the report said. "Until then, the evacuees will not be able to receive compensation from the state." According to the report, "the dimensions of the destruction in the war with Iran are already too great to contain. In just a week, 33,000 lawsuits were filed, and about 11,000 people were evicted from their homes". At the same time, The Marker reports that there is a shortage of workers to rebuild the destroyed residential buildings. "Without an additional 15,000 foreign workers to rebuild the destruction in Gush Dan, the construction industry could stagnate," the report said. A source in the Tax Authority told The Marker the level of damage from the war with Iran is not something Israelis have known before. Just one building in a high-density urban landscape was so badly damaged it was slated for demolition due to the Gaza war. Now, according to The Marker's source, Iranian missiles have condemned another 30.

Heroic Tayasir operation reveals that resistance mood in West Bank is heading towards escalation

Capitals - Saba: Despite the Zionist plans seeking to reformulate the occupied West Bank and dismantle the capabilities of the Palestinian resistance there, the resistance has shown unprecedented steadfastness, inflicting heavy losses on the ranks of the Zionist enemy soldiers. Today, the Palestinian resistance in the West Bank is grabbing attention, with one of its fighters carrying out a qualitative operation at the Tayasir military checkpoint east of Tubas, after he managed to infiltrate a Zionist military site near the Tayasir checkpoint east of Jenin in the West Bank, and take control of one of the floors of its tower. An investigation by the Zionist enemy army revealed that the perpetrator of the attack, who wore a bulletproof vest, had accurate intelligence information about the military site and the movements and locations of the soldiers, indicating security gaps exploited by the gunman at the site near Tubas and Jenin, which are heavily guarded Zionist military areas. According to the investigations of the enemy army, the gunman arrived in civilian clothes and then ambushed the Zionist soldiers outside the guard room. After taking control of the upper floor of the tower, he began shooting at the soldiers who were on alert, killing two, one of whom was a reserve first sergeant, in addition to wounding eight, two of whom are in critical condition. Certainly, this new operation, which the Zionist media described as "difficult and unacceptable", reflects the state of confusion that has afflicted the Zionist army, and brings to mind the scenes of October 7, 2023. The Zionist Channel 13 indicated that the checkpoint was witnessing a gathering of a number of soldiers when the shooting occurred, while the Zionist Broadcasting Authority explained that the Tayasir operation took place during rush hour when the army is on alert. According to the newspaper "Maariv", the soldiers injured in the operation are from the same battalion whose commander was seriously injured and one of its soldiers was killed a few days ago in Tamoun. Military sources described to Maariv the results of the Tayasir operation as "difficult and unacceptable to the army, and a mistake was made and we are looking into its causes." Following the operation, Zionist analyst Yossi Melman commented, saying: "The West Bank is burning in Tulkarm, Jenin, Hebron, and now in the northern Jordan Valley." It seems that this operation reveals that the resistance mood in the West Bank is moving towards escalating resistance in all its forms, and thus represents a preliminary test of the failure of the "Iron Wall" operation carried out by the enemy army in the northern occupied West Bank. In reactions, Palestinian resistance factions blessed the shooting operation at the Tayasir military checkpoint, stressing that the operation is a message to the Zionists that they have no security or stability in light of the continued Zionist aggression against the Palestinian people. The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas said in a statement: "The heroic and qualitative shooting operation carried out by a Palestinian resistance fighter targeting the Tayasir military checkpoint east of Tubas comes in response to the crimes of the occupation and its aggression on the northern occupied West Bank," stressing that this will not go unpunished. The movement added: "The ongoing crimes of the occupation against our Palestinian people in the West Bank and its camps in Jenin, Tulkarm and Tubas will not weaken the resolve of our people and their resistance." Hamas called for "escalating the clash with the occupation and its settlers, and challenging its criminal army and its security and military measures, in support of our land and our holy sites, and in affirmation of our right to freedom and the establishment of our independent state with Jerusalem as its capital." For its part, the Islamic Jihad Movement said in a statement: "This heroic operation comes as an affirmation of the determination of our people and their resistance to confront the crimes of the criminal occupation that blows up homes, displaces families and terrorizes civilians." It stressed that "the resistance of the Palestinian people will continue until the occupation is defeated." For its part, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said in a statement: "This qualitative strike confirms the fragility of the Zionist security system and its inability to face the escalation of resistance in the occupied West Bank." In a related context, the Resistance Committees in Palestine considered the operation "a legitimate response and a natural duty to the crimes of the criminal occupation and its war against our people in Jenin." Stressing that the heroic operation near Jenin is a new and ongoing slap in the face to the Zionist security and military system. In light of the field escalation by the resistance factions, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades announced that its fighters had trapped a Zionist infantry force in a tight ambush inside the Far'a camp in Tubas Governorate, where a highly explosive explosive device was detonated by military force, followed by an intensive targeting with a hail of bullets, which resulted in confirmed injuries among the soldiers of the Zionist enemy. In the same context, Saraya Al-Quds - Jenin Battalion confirmed that it engaged in violent clashes with the enemy forces on the combat axes in the town of Silat Al-Harithiya, where its fighters were able to target military vehicles with heavy volleys of bullets, in addition to detonating an explosive device of the "Sajil" type in one of the military vehicles, achieving direct hits. Field sources also reported that the resistance planted a number of guided explosive devices of the "Sajil" and "KJ37" types in the path of the Zionist enemy forces at the entrance to the town of Silat Al-Harithiya, which caused severe damage to the military vehicles.
