USD softball fends off Kansas City in Summit League Tourney
BROOKINGS, S.D. (USD) — The South Dakota softball team made it five straight wins with an 8-6 win over Kansas City Wednesday afternoon to advance in the Summit League Tournament. With the win today, head coach Robert Wagner reached 200 career wins at South Dakota. After a 1-2-3 first inning from both squads, the Roos found runners in scoring position first in the top of the second. A ground out to shortstop recorded the second out of the inning but would move a pair of Kansas City runners to second and third. Clara Edwards stranded the Roos on base by forcing a groundout to Rylie Jones at shortstop. Autumn Iversen started the third inning with a leadoff single, her first of two hits in the inning, as the Coyote bats exploded for a six-run frame. Madison Evans reached base safely on an error in the outfield, and the Yotes would use small ball to move them over with a sac bunt from Clara Edwards . The move paid off in the next at-bat as Ella McGee put the ball in play in the infield, and Iversen beat the throw home to score the first run of the day for USD. Villotta reached on a bunt single to load the bases, and Delaney White and Abi Brown drove in four runs to take a 5-1 lead. White's single to left-center brought in McGee and Evans, while Brown just missed her fifth homer of the season as she doubled to drive in two on a ball that hit the outfield fence on the fly. The Yotes closed out the six-run inning with Edwards bringing in Brown on a bunt where all runners were called safe. The Roos, however, would respond in the sixth inning to tie the ball game at 6-6. Miscues hurt the Yotes in the frames with a pair of errors and two passed balls. After back-to-back outs to start the bottom of the sixth, McGee doubled to left center, which started a string of four straight hits by the Yotes. Villotta legged out an infield single, moving McGee to third in the process, and the Yotes had runners on the corners. White tallied her third hit and third RBI of the day with an infield single. The Yotes would push their lead to two on an infield single from Brown to go into the seventh frame with an 8-6 edge. McKenna Young put the Roos down in order with three fly outs to close out the 8-6 win. White, Villota, Brown and Iversen all tallied two or more hits, while White and Brown each drove in three runs. Edwards started in the circle for the Yotes and went 3.0 innings with five hits, one earned run and two strikeouts. Young earns the win after throwing the final 4.0 innings. She allowed two hits, three earned runs and had one punchout. The Yotes return to action tomorrow to face the No. 2 seeded South Dakota State at 1:30 p.m. at Jerald T. South Dakota softball advances to Summit League semifinals with 8-6 defeat of Kansas City, head coach Robert Wagner earns 200th win with ‘Yotes
BROOKINGS, S.D. (KCAU) – #3 South Dakota earned its fifth consecutive win, defeating #6 Kansas City 8-6 to open up Summit League Tournament play. USD exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning, but Kansas City would come back with a five-run sixth inning. The 'Yotes put together a pair of base hits in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game out of reach. The victory gives South Dakota head coach Robert Wagner his 200th win at USD. Coyotes shut out Roos for Senior Day win
VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) — South Dakota softball closed out the regular season and earned its fourth straight win Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win over Kansas City on Senior Day. The Coyotes jumped ahead early with five runs in the first inning, following a scoreless top half of the first from Clara Edwards in the circle. Ella McGee led off with a bunt single, and Tatum Villotta reached on a throwing error that would advance both runners to second and third. Delaney White brought both home with a single back up the middle for a 2-0 early lead. Three straight RBI singles from Abi Brown, Rylie Jones and Autumn Iversen extended the Yotes lead to 5-0 in the first inning. Iversen added to the Yotes lead in the third with a groundout to shortstop that scored pinch runner Isabel Carda from third. Iversen grounded out in the fifth but drove in Abi Brown for her third RBI of the game to give the Yotes a 7-0 lead. Edwards started in the circle and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit. McKenna Young entered in relief and threw the final 5.0 innings. Young struck out four and allowed just five hits. Iversen drove in three runs and went 1-for-3 from the plate, while Brown went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and had one RBI. Next up for the Yotes is the Summit League Tournament in Brookings, S.D. USD softball sweeps Kansas City Friday
VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) — South Dakota softball earned a pair of conference wins Friday afternoon at Nygaard Field over Kansas City. The Yotes improve to 27-22 on the season and 7-10 in the Summit League with a 7-3 win in game one and an 8-0 run-rule win in game two. Game 1 – W, 7-3Through three innings of game one, the Coyotes and Roos bats were held in check by each team's respective pitchers as each team would tally two baserunners each through three. Kansas City broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth with one run on a pair of hits. The Coyote bats came alive in the bottom half of the fourth with five hits to score three runs. Clara Edwards notched the first hit of the inning with a single to center field and would move to second on a Madison Evans groundout. With two outs, Autumn Iversen started a string of four straight hits for USD with a single to left center that scored Edwards from second. Rylie Jones doubled to right field to bring home Iversen and would touch home plate two batters later on a Sara Iburg single down the left field line. Edwards made quick work of the Roos in the fifth with a 1-2-3 frame. The Yotes added three more runs in the bottom of the inning, all with two outs, on a passed ball, a wild pitch and an Abi Brown single to right field. KC threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, but the Yotes held off the Roos comeback efforts. With a pair of runners on in the sixth and one out, a line drive was snagged by Delaney White at first who touched first to complete a solo double play and get out of the inning. The Roos loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Edwards dug in to record two straight outs via strikeout and fly out to right field. Edwards improved to 13-11 on the season after her 14th complete game. She allowed just two earned runs and struck out two, while going 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and one run. Evans and Brown also tallied two hits in the contest, while Jones had an extra base hit with a double. Game 2 – W, 8-0 (5 innings)The Yotes built their lead up early in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning following a scoreless top half in the circle from McKenna Young. Ella McGee led off with an infield single and was moved over to second on a Tatum Villotta sac bunt. White found the gap in right center for a double in the next at-bat, bringing in McGee from second for the first run of the game. With two outs in the inning, a Brown single scored White, and Jones notched her second double of the doubleheader to score a pair of Yotes. South Dakota tacked on three more runs in the third to go up 7-0 on an Iversen double, Carey single and a groundout from McGee that scored Iversen from third. Young continued her solid afternoon in the circle by putting the Roos down in order in the third, fourth and fifth frames. Iversen found herself in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth after finding the gap again in the outfield for her second double of the game. Carey singled to center field that brought in Iversen from second and secured the Yotes 8-0 run-rule win. Young threw all 5.0 innings in the circle for the Yotes and allowed just one hit while striking out three to improve to 12-8 on the season. McGee, Jones, Iversen and Carey all notched two hits for the Yotes, while Jones and Carey each had two RBIs. The Coyotes return to Nygaard Field for the final time in the 2025 season tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. for the series finale with the Roos. South Dakota drops two to North Dakota State
FARGO, N.D. (USD) — South Dakota softball fell 3-0 in both contests Saturday afternoon at Tharaldson Park to North Dakota State. The Coyotes are 24-22 overall and 4-10 in Summit League play this season. Game 1 – L, 3-0 It was a pitcher's duel to start the first game between Clara Edwards and the Bison's Savy Williams as the pitcher's put together four straight scoreless innings. Edwards escaped a jam in the third, after the Bison loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, but Edwards would work her way out of it by forcing a groundout to third. The Bison took advantage of a Coyote error and three walks in the fifth, as they scratched across all three of their runs in the frame. With one out in the fifth, back-to-back singles from Brooke Carey and Tatum Villotta put the Yotes in position to cut into the NDSU lead. Williams, however, would force a pair of fielder's choices in the next two at-bats to keep the Yotes off the scoreboard. Campbell German, who entered in relief in the fifth, put the Bison down in order in the sixth to keep the Yotes within three runs. A walk and a single to start the seventh saw Sara Iburg and Madison Evans on base with no outs. The Bison would close out the first game of the twinbill with a fielder's choice, fly out and line out in the next three at-bats. The Yotes outhit the Bison five to three but gave up five walks to NDSU's one and had two errors. Evans went 2-for-3 from the plate and tallied her eighth multi-hit game of the season. Edwards is tagged with the loss after 4.2 innings of work with three unearned runs surrendered. Game 2 – L, 3-0Game two was nearly identical to game one, as both teams were scoreless through four and a half innings before the Bison put up three runs on four hits in the fifth. Looking to respond in the sixth, the Yotes found runners on first and second with one out after a pair of walks. Evans would ground out to first but move both runners over into prime scoring position. The Bison would escape the inning, and maintain the 3-0 lead, by forcing a fly out to end the top half of the inning. McKenna Young stranded a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth, ending the frame with her fifth strikeout, to keep the Yotes within three runs of the Bison. NDSU's Piper Reed would close out her complete game shutout win with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Young threw all 6.0 innings for the Yotes with five punchouts and takes the loss in the circle.
