South Dakota drops two to North Dakota State
FARGO, N.D. (USD) — South Dakota softball fell 3-0 in both contests Saturday afternoon at Tharaldson Park to North Dakota State. The Coyotes are 24-22 overall and 4-10 in Summit League play this season. Game 1 – L, 3-0 It was a pitcher's duel to start the first game between Clara Edwards and the Bison's Savy Williams as the pitcher's put together four straight scoreless innings. Edwards escaped a jam in the third, after the Bison loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, but Edwards would work her way out of it by forcing a groundout to third. The Bison took advantage of a Coyote error and three walks in the fifth, as they scratched across all three of their runs in the frame. With one out in the fifth, back-to-back singles from Brooke Carey and Tatum Villotta put the Yotes in position to cut into the NDSU lead. Williams, however, would force a pair of fielder's choices in the next two at-bats to keep the Yotes off the scoreboard. Campbell German, who entered in relief in the fifth, put the Bison down in order in the sixth to keep the Yotes within three runs. A walk and a single to start the seventh saw Sara Iburg and Madison Evans on base with no outs. The Bison would close out the first game of the twinbill with a fielder's choice, fly out and line out in the next three at-bats. The Yotes outhit the Bison five to three but gave up five walks to NDSU's one and had two errors. Evans went 2-for-3 from the plate and tallied her eighth multi-hit game of the season. Edwards is tagged with the loss after 4.2 innings of work with three unearned runs surrendered. Game 2 – L, 3-0Game two was nearly identical to game one, as both teams were scoreless through four and a half innings before the Bison put up three runs on four hits in the fifth. Looking to respond in the sixth, the Yotes found runners on first and second with one out after a pair of walks. Evans would ground out to first but move both runners over into prime scoring position. The Bison would escape the inning, and maintain the 3-0 lead, by forcing a fly out to end the top half of the inning. McKenna Young stranded a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth, ending the frame with her fifth strikeout, to keep the Yotes within three runs of the Bison. NDSU's Piper Reed would close out her complete game shutout win with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Young threw all 6.0 innings for the Yotes with five punchouts and takes the loss in the circle. The Yotes will look to bounce back tomorrow in the series finale against North Dakota State. First pitch is set for noon at Tharaldson Park.

Two former Wisconsin Badgers land on PFF's list of the NFL's top guards for 2025 A pair of former Wisconsin Badgers appeared on ProFootballFocus' recent list of the NFL's top 32 guards entering the 2025 season. Detroit Lions right guard Kevin Zeitler, a three-year Badger from 2009-11, and Buffalo Bills left guard David Edwards, who represented the Badgers from 2015-18, earned designations on the outlet's 32-man hierarchy. Zeitler, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, landed at No. 9 on the list between Los Angeles Rams guard Kevin Dotson (No. 8) and San Francisco 49ers run-blocker Dominick Puni. The former Badger signed with the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2024 slate following his 2023 Pro Bowl campaign with the Baltimore Ravens. He's now entering his 14th professional campaign. In offensive coordinator Ben Johnson's scheme, Zeitler helped the Lions rush 534 times for 2,488 yards and 29 scores with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs starring in the backfield. Zeitler started at right guard in all 16 of his appearances. Despite being one of the older players at his position, Zeitler is about as effective as anyone not named Joe Thuney, Chris Lindstrom, or Quenton Nelson. Here's PFF's analysis: "Although Zeitler enters 2025 at age 35, he continues to prove he isn't slowing down. In his lone season in Detroit, Zeitler earned his highest PFF overall grade (86.5) in a decade, finishing as the NFL's third-highest-graded guard. While his pass protection dipped a bit in 2024, his 87.2 PFF run-blocking grade stands as the best of his career." Meanwhile, PFF ranked Edwards down at No. 29. The 2019 First-team All-Big Ten team member has played six professional seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills. Shortly after winning a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021, the lineman joined the Bills in 2023 as a backup before starting all 16 games during the 2024 campaign. With reigning MVP Josh Allen and dynamic rusher James Cook as primary ball-carriers, the Bills rushed for 2,230 yards and a league-best 32 touchdowns a season ago. Here's what PFF said about Edwards ahead of his third season in Buffalo: "2024 marked Edwards' first season in a starting role since 2021. He earned solid PFF overall grades, but really stood out as a zone blocker, recording a 78.1 PFF run-blocking grade on zone concepts — good for the 93rd percentile and the fifth-highest mark among qualifying guards." Zeitler's Lions will square off against the Packers on Sept. 7 to begin the season, while Edwards' Bills will play the Ravens the same day, beginning their quest for a second straight AFC Championship game appearance. Recapping offers, happenings at Notre Dame's Irish Invasion camp It was a big day for Notre Dame football, as they welcomed in multiple top-end prospects for its Irish Invasion camp. Earlier in the day, it was Texas running back Wayne Shanks Jr. earning an offer, but that wasn't the only one send out following the event. Multiple more players were given scholarships by Notre Dame, and a good part of that was due to the boss, head coach Marcus Freeman being there. That's what separates this era of Irish football from others, the fact that this coaching staff is all-in on the program, and it has shown on the recruiting trail. It wasn't just them either, star running back Jeremiyah Love made an appearance as well. Find out below all the other prospects to earn an offer from Notre Dame during Irish Invasion. (Note: All recruits rankings are from the 247Sports Composite.) 2028 Linebacker Tahj Gray The 6-foot, 2-inch and 200-pound New Jersey native must have shown out during the camp, as the Irish are one of the first major schools to send out an offer after Ohio State and Penn State to the currently unranked prospect. Gray has the perfect size for a middle linebacker, and would look great in the Blue and Gold. 2028 Edge Jackson Vaughn Bergen Catholic has been good to Notre Dame, even though one of its former stars in Steve Angeli is no longer with the program. That didn't matter with the offer out to Vaughn, a 6-foot, 3-inch and 220-pound pass rusher. While he's not ranked at the moment, he has over 30-offers as he heads into his sophomore year. 2028 Cornerback Phoenix Evans Another New Jersey prospect getting an Irish offer, Evans is a bit on the smaller side at 5-foot, 9-inches and 160-pounds. That didn't seem to matter after his performance on Friday, showing that his size isn't going to stop him from being a high-level player. Evans also is unranked, but has over 25-offers, and should be soon. 2028 Defensive end Asher Ghioto Notre Dame has put extra focus on Florida prospects, and Ghioto is the latest from the state to earn an offer. At 6-foot, 5-inches and 240-pounds, he's got a very projectable body that could fill out even more by the time he arrives at a college campus. It's going to be tough to get him to leave his home state, but the Irish have shown that isn't an issue for them. 2027 Edge Chaz Gray It was a big day for New Jersey prospects, as Gray was added to the list that Notre Dame offered. At 6-foot, 4-inches and 225-pounds, he's the long, athletic and fast prospect that the Irish look for in an edge rusher. Gray is ranked as the No. 401 overall player in his class. 2028 Linebacker Allen Kennett Unranked at the moment, the 6-foot, 1-inch and 215-pound Californian did what he needed to earn a Notre Dame offer. He's a bit of unknown at the moment, but don't let that fool you. If Kennett is good enough to earn a scholarship, then he can play at this level.

And for Pro Football Focus, when ranking the top offensive duos in football, a nod to their talent and chemistry places Mayfield and Evans at No. 5. "Mayfield and Evans both ranked near the top 10 of their respective position rankings heading into the season, with Evans at No. 9 and Mayfield coming at No. 13," Pro Football Focus writes. "Since Mayfield arrived in Tampa Bay in 2023, his 22 big-time throws when targeting Evans are tied for the second most among duos in these rankings, behind only Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill (28). Mayfield-to-Evans has also produced 2,259 yards over the past two years, which ranks third on this list." Advertisement Having been a beacon of high-level production for over a decade, Evans doesn't appear to be hampered by Father Time (yet), and Mayfield's career resurgence since arriving in Tampa Bay has been fascinating to watch. Many expect the Buccaneers to be a good football team in 2025, and Mayfield and Evans are big reasons why. Two high-caliber Pro Bowl players who, when their team needs them to deliver, more often than not, do. And if the 2025 season goes the way Buccaneers fans hope, come next season, they might be a little higher on PFF's list.
