‘SNL' star Sarah Sherman breaks silence over poking fun at Aimee Lou Wood
Sarah Sherman is setting the record straight. The 'Saturday Night Live' star, 32, spoke out for the first time about her 'White Lotus' parody on the sketch comedy show that left Aimee Lou Wood, 31, feeling hurt last month. 'I was excited to play her because she's so iconic, her character is so iconic,' Sherman told Vanity Fair in an interview published on Tuesday, 'and I f–king obviously never meant to hurt anyone's feelings. Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.' 7 Sarah Sherman during the 'White Lotus' sketch on Saturday, April 12, 2025. HBO The April 12th episode poked fun at Donald Trump and his tariffs, using the characters from the third season of the HBO series to act out a family scene. Wood took to social media after the skit to call out Sherman's take on her character, Chelsea. The comic, however, insisted that she wasn't trying to be mean about the 'Sex Education' actress. 'The show is in constant dialogue with culture as it's happening, and it happens really fast,' Sherman explained. 'You have to be vigilant, you know what I mean?' The 'You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah' alum noted that when on 'SNL,' there are a lot of different roles to juggle. 7 Sarah Sherman attends SNL50. FilmMagic 'There are a lot of things out of your control,' stated Sherman. 'You're playing a lot of different parts, you're doing a lot of different roles that you're not in control of. A lot of the process of the show has been, to me—how am I answering this? Staying vigilant but also being a part of the show—that is your job.' After the original 'SNL' sketch aired — which saw the cast member doing a British accent and wearing prosthetic teeth — Wood slammed the 'mean and unfunny' parody on her social media. 'Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago,' she continued. 'Yes, take the piss for sure — that's what the show is about — but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?' 7 Sarah Sherman as Aimee Lou Wood's character Chelsea. NBC / SNL Wood added, 'On a positive note, everyone is agreeing with me about it so I'm glad I said something instead of going in on myself.' The star shared with followers that she received 'thousands' of supportive messages and received an apology from 'Saturday Night Live.' However, according to TMZ, the NBC series never issued a formal apology, but she 'may have spoken to someone she knows on the show' who might have apologized. 7 Aimee Lou Wood in 'The White Lotus.' HBO The insiders alleged that 'SNL' doesn't 'feel compelled to apologize' to Wood since the sketch comedy series 'makes fun of everyone's appearance.' The English actress was seemingly tricked into reposting an apology from a fake account posing as Sherman, but she quickly deleted the post once she realized her mistake. The real Sherman, meanwhile, did send Wood a gift afterwards. 7 'White Lotus' stars Aimee Lou Wood and Walter Goggins. Instagram/@waltongogginsbonafide Wood posted the 'beautiful' gift to her Instagram Stories, sharing a close-up of a pretty floral arrangement. 'Thank you for the beautiful flowers,' she wrote. Many of Sherman's 'SNL' co-stars have spoken out about the portrayal, coming to the funny woman's defense. 'You know, we make stuff with love. I wasn't writing the skit,' Chloe Fineman told Entertainment Tonight earlier this month. 'I wasn't necessarily a decision-maker in any of that. But I know Sarah [Sherman] and I absolutely worship her. I tried to have Amy the week before in something. And I just, like, worship her and know that it was from love and we've moved on.' 7 Sarah Sherman, host Walton Goggins as Albie, and Heidi Gardner during the 'Mother's Day Brunch' sketch on Saturday, May, 10 2025. Will Heath/NBC via Getty Images Bowen Yang addressed the controversial parody as well. 'However she reacted to that sketch is completely valid,' Yang, 34, told Extra in April. 'With parody, you kind of forget the sort of human, emotional cost. I feel like it's this thing that we tend to forget sometimes, and this is a reminder, and it seems like she has spoken to people at the show about it and hopefully, there's room to sort of move on from it.'

Adam Sandler's daughters join cast of Happy Gilmore 2
Adam Sandler's daughters Sadie and Sunny have been revealed as additional cast members for Happy Gilmore 2. Netflix executives dropped the teaser trailer for the sports comedy on Tuesday and announced that the sequel will be released on the streaming service on 25 July. They also revealed who will appear alongside Sandler as the titular Happy Gilmore. His co-stars include returning cast members Christopher McDonald as his rival Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as his love interest Virginia Venit and Ben Stiller as Hal L. New additions to the cast include Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio - best known as Bad Bunny - and American footballer Travis Kelce, who had both been previously revealed. The involvement of Sadie, 18, and Sunny, 16, was announced on Tuesday alongside the line-up of professional golfers. The likes of Rory McIlroy, John Daly, Paige Spiranac, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Will Zalatoris will make cameos in the film. Interestingly, Margaret Qualley and Benny Safdie are not mentioned on the cast list despite their appearances being publicly revealed. Sadie and Sunny, who were not born when the original Happy Gilmore was released in 1996, have previously appeared alongside their father in Netflix films including You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, Murder Mystery and Hubie Halloween. The teaser trailer shows Happy getting back into golf after he left the sport behind following his big tournament win in the original. "I haven't swung a club in years," he says, before admitting that he's a "little intimidated" by his new competitors. "We're not done with golf. Let them see the Happy I fell in love with," Virginia tells him. Murder Mystery's Kyle Newacheck directed the sequel, which was written by original scribe Tim Herlihy.

Idina Menzel on Her ‘Exhilarating' Broadway Return in ‘Redwood' and Swinging From a Tree 20 Feet Above the Stage
Idina Menzel is no stranger to flying high above Broadway stages, and she made her soaring return (literally) Thursday night with the new musical 'Redwood.' The show marks her first Broadway role since 2014's 'If/Then,' and Menzel also co-conceived 'Redwood' with Tina Landau, who wrote the book. It follows Jesse, a mother struggling with the death of her son after an accidental overdose. To process her grief, she drives from New York to California's Redwood forest to escape the big city and her feelings. There, she befriends two arborists who let her climb a towering Redwood tree on her own to process her trauma and reconnect with her wife. More from Variety 'Redwood' Review: Idina Menzel Hits the Heights in a Heartfelt Broadway Return Inside the 'Wicked' Surprise Cameos: How [SPOILER] Landed Back in Oz 'You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah' Director on Working With Adam Sandler's Daughters in Netflix's New Teen Movie The most exciting moments of the musical revolve around Stella, the Redwood tree that is central in the story — and the stage. Menzel and the cast wear harnesses to ascend more than 20 feet up the Redwood, just like real tree climbers would. 'We had to practice first and learn how to get into harnesses and get certified for climbing. The first time we did it in tech was so much fun,' Menzel told Variety at the 'Redwood' opening at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre. 'We find it really exhilarating and liberating in the show.' Just like Elphaba in 'Wicked,' Menzel seems to defy gravity and belt out songs while swinging, leaping and twirling upside-down from the tree. There was a lot of practice to perfect the climbing, and nobody reported any falls or close calls. 'There's no fake flying in here. There's nobody lifting anyone. The actors learned it. Idina and the cast went out to Oakland and climbed on a Redwood tree to learn it. They're real tree climbers and that's what you're seeing on stage,' Landau said. 'We've done really well with the height and vertical choreography and dance. There's a really intense culture of safety. We have a saying, 'We move at the speed of trust.' So it's been very safe, slow, gentle and no accidents.' Landau and Menzel originally had the idea for the show 15 years ago, then reconnected during the pandemic to bring it to life. They brought on composer Kate Diaz, who made her theatrical debut, to write the songs. The cast also includes De'Adre Aziza, Khaila Wilcoxon, Michael Park and Zachary Noah Piser, who plays Jesse's late son. 'Idina Menzel is the kind of artist who puts everything into everything she does,' Piser said. 'This was even a beat further than that because she co-conceived parts of it. You can tell by the way that she performs that she cares deeply. That is an intangible thing that affects the overall chemistry of everyone. You feed off that love and care and collaboration.'
