For nearly four decades, Ekin Cheng Yee-kin has been an energetic presence in Hong Kong cinema, effortlessly transitioning from playing charismatic triad leaders to nuanced dramatic roles. His accomplishments were recently recognised with the Star Asia Award at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), honouring his contributions across film, television and music, and his impact on Hong Kong's popular culture. The festival – which runs until July 27 – has been celebrating Cheng's career by screening both his latest film, Last Song for You , and Young and Dangerous – the film that launched him to global fame three decades ago. But the actor seems most taken with his surroundings. 'This time around, New York really surprised me. I really like it. If I had known, I would've brought more athletic outfits to run around and exercise,' he says. Ekin Cheng in a still from Last Song for You. For this interview, we meet Cheng at the Film at Lincoln Centre before the award ceremony. The actor, dressed in black, is polite but reserved at first. This is his second visit to New York, but he plans to return more frequently.

#SHOWBIZ: Ekin Cheng won't reprise 'Young And Dangerous' role, not even for RM4 million

HONG KONG: Hong Kong actor Ekin Cheng is best known for his iconic role as Chan Ho Nam in the cult triad series, Young And Dangerous. The first film began in 1996 and wrapped up with its sixth instalment in 2000. Despite the franchise's popularity, Cheng, 57, has repeatedly turned down offers to return – even when directors and producers were willing to meet all his conditions. According to entertainment portal 8days, Cheng has been approached numerous times over the years by different film companies eager to revive the franchise. But the star remained firm in his decision, citing issues with the plot as the reason. Still, producers tried to sweeten the deal by offering him creative control and inviting his favourite Chinese badminton player, Lin Dan, to make a cameo. Cheng was even offered RM3.83million for just one day of filming. HK film producer Manfred Wong said: "No matter what was offered, Ekin just would not do it."

Despite the franchise's enduring popularity, Cheng, now 57, has repeatedly turned down offers to return – even when directors and producers were willing to meet all his conditions. According to entertainment portal 8days, Cheng has been approached numerous times over the years by different film companies eager to revive the franchise. One film company even brought in acclaimed Hong Kong director Wilson Chin to helm the project, hoping it would sway Cheng. But the star remained firm in his decision, citing issues with the plot as one of the reasons he refused to return. Still, producers didn't give up. They tried to sweeten the deal by offering him creative control and inviting his favourite Chinese badminton player, Lin Dan, to make a cameo. Still, he declined. According to the report, Cheng was even offered S$1.17mil (RM3.83mil) for just one day of filming. HK film producer Manfred Wong said: 'No matter what was offered, Ekin just wouldn't do it. The filmmakers didn't believe he'd refuse, so they offered him S$1.17mil.' Well, needless to say, he still said no.
