North Syracuse neighbors not happy with new trash rollout

VILLAGE OF NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Some viewers have reached out to the Your Stories Team, wondering why the Village of North Syracuse didn't give its residents more notice about changes to its trash pickup. Neighbors who contacted us and those posting online said they were surprised when their trash and recycling bins were picked up this week and driven away by Syracuse Trash Haulers. Several people claimed they had no clue what was happening until an 'Urgent Notice' from the village was put on their door telling them of the trash change. 'Talk about poor planning,' one resident wrote on the Village of North Syracuse Facebook page. According to North Syracuse Mayor Gary Butterfield, the village's contract with Syracuse Haulers expires at the end of the month. Starting June 1, Butler Disposal will become the village's new trash and recycling hauler. He said the village is required to accept the lowest bid, which was Butler. Butterfield said the village worked with Onondaga County to help with the bidding process. He said they had a short window to alert the people of North Syracuse of the contract change. He added they posted the information on their website and Facebook page, but admits the communication wasn't perfect. He said they could have done better with the transition and getting the word out. The village said Butler will drop off new trash and recycling carts starting June 5. 'So, where is the trash supposed to be stored in the meantime?' Another resident posted on Facebook. The mayor said that while the carts will not be delivered until June 5, Butler will start picking up trash on the week of June 2nd. 'June 2nd, June 3rd, and June 4th, will have manual trash pickup that will pick up your bags at the road….trash on one side, recyclables on the other side. If you can save your recyclables/trash until the following week – perfect – you will have a tote available for the following week. Again, we apologize for any of these difficulties,' The Village of North Syracuse wrote on its Facebook page. Submit a form. Your Stories Q&A: When will the rough ramp near Destiny USA get repaired?

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer! Viewer Question: The ramp off I-81 southbound that takes you to Destiny USA is in rough shape. When will it get fixed? This pothole-patched off-ramp has prompted several questions over the years to the Your Stories Team. Viewers are frustrated with the declining conditions of the Hiawatha Boulevard, Destiny USA Drive, Bear Street exit and want to know when the surface will be smoothed. About 11,000 drivers use this ramp daily, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. As in our previous stories on this rough ramp, the NYSDOT offers few details on when the surface will get fixed and what type of construction project is planned. 'NYSDOT continues to provide maintenance as needed to Exit 23A-23B-22 as we progress plans for a more substantial rehabilitation project. We anticipate having more information in the near future,' a NYSDOT spokesperson said in an email to NewsChannel 9. When we pushed for more details, we were told that the project is in the preliminary design stages and it would be premature for the NYSDOT to comment further. We'll keep checking! Submit a form. Do you need a REAL ID? What to know

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Your Stories Team has received several questions about the REAL ID. Here are some of the questions and answers to help you understand who needs the REAL ID and who doesn't. The answer is no. An enhanced license meets REAL ID requirements, which means if you have an enhanced license, you do not need a REAL ID. A REAL ID allows you to fly domestically. An enhanced license allows you to travel domestically and to Canada and Mexico. The answer is no. A passport also meets REAL ID requirements, which means if you have a passport, you do not need a REAL ID. With the deadline approaching, the DMVs are busier than normal. Even though they're bulkier to carry, the Madison County Clerk suggested people who have passports use them to fly to avoid the long lines at the DMV. To see what you would need to bring to the DMV to get your REAL ID, this link here will bring you to the New York State DMV website. If you click on the 'find out what documents you need' button, it will customize the documents you need specific to your situation. If you are not flying or trying to enter a federal building on May 7, your day will not be impacted. For those who are taking to the skies, you will need a REAL ID or an enhanced license, or a passport to travel wherever you are going. If someone shows up on May 7 with an ID that is not REAL ID compliant, they should expect delays, additional screening, and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint. Your Stories Q&A: Denny's in Camillus closes abruptly after 25 years

CAMILLUS, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer!Central New York has lost another Denny's. A sign in the window at 5315 W. Genesee Street in Camillus, reads: To our valued guests: We sincerely thank you for your patronage over the years. This location has closed. It then directs customers to its three remaining Onondaga County locations. The Your Stories Team has reached out to the chain to get answers, but have not heard back. The news comes as Denny's announced last October that it's closing 150 of its lowest-performing restaurants. It's not clear if the Camillus closure is part of that strategy. Back in 2020, the Camillus location was one of seven spots that closed during COVID. Some of the restaurants, including Camillus, reopened, while others permanently closed. The Camillus Denny's had been serving up customers for more than 25 years. Submit a form. Your Stories Q&A: Will this weekend be the last time we change the clock for good?

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer! Viewer Question: This is a popular topic for the Your Stories Team. This question always comes up when we near a time change. And while this is not a new topic, there is a renewed push to 'Lock the Clock.' According to The Hill, back in December, President Donald Trump threw his support behind eliminating changing the clock twice a year. Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Rick Scott (R-FL) and Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) have reintroduced a version of the Sunshine Protection Act in Washington. It calls for daylight saving time to be year-round. Former Senator Marco Rubio, who's now Secretary of State, tried to pass a similar bill in 2022. It received bipartisan support but ultimately stalled. Currently, the Sunshine Protection Act of 2025 has been assigned to the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee in the Senate. If Congress were to pass the bill, it would stop us from changing the clock back an hour in the fall. This would mean the sun wouldn't rise until 8:30 a.m. in December here in Central New York. When discussing 'lock the clock,' there's always controversy when it comes to how it would be locked. Should we follow daylight saving time or standard time? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has advocated in the past to go with year-round standard time. If standard time became permanent, Central New Yorkers would see summer sunrises before 4:30 a.m. In addition to the federal push to 'lock the clock,' there's also movement in New York. State Senate Bill S297 was introduced in January. It would establish a task force to study the effects of opting out of daylight saving time. The bill states: While there's growing support to stop the practice of changing our clocks, it is something we still have to do until laws are changed. Submit a form.
