Youssouf Ndayishimiye: Burundi and Nice defender on his rise out of poverty
Growing up in Bujumbura, the largest city in Burundi, Youssouf Ndayishimiye always hoped that football would prove to be his route out of "unimaginable poverty". After becoming the most expensive player in his country's history when he joined Nice in 2023 for a reported €11.5m ($13m, £9.75m), the 26-year-old is certainly a world away from a childhood which included often going without food and lacking basic necessities. "I saw how much my mother loved us - but was unable to provide for us," he told BBC Great Lakes when recalling his early years. "I felt I had to work tirelessly so as to lift my family out of this poverty. I had a clear vision for my life." Bujumbura, located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, is the commercial capital of a nation which is one of the world's poorest in terms of GDP per capita, according to the World Bank. Born in the Buyenzi area of the city, Ndayishimiye is the eldest of three siblings and has another five half-siblings. His family later moved to the "dumpsite neighbourhood" of Buterere. His skills on a football pitch helped him stand out even if, on occasion, he had to train barefoot. When bigger clubs came calling, he would even have to deal with bouts of jealousy from his peers. "One day I had to borrow boots from a friend when a second division club, Les Lierres, had agreed to sign me," he said. "I was devastated when he refused to lend me the boots [for a trial], but I didn't give up."

OGC Nice's defensive options are limited as they prepare to host Stade de Reims at the Allianz Riviera. The club are reeling after two major injuries in the space of the last week. Mohamed Abdelmonem was the first to suffer an injury. He ruptured his ACL in an innocuous duel against Paris Saint-Germain on Friday and will be out for several months. The same fate then befell Youssouf Ndayishimiye, who also suffered an ACL injury. He suffered the injury during a duel in training on Wednesday and like his Egyptian teammate, will now face a considerable spell on the sidelines. Advertisement Dante returns having missed the win against PSG last weekend with a minor knee injury. However, having only just returned to training, he may not start. Franck Haise's options at the back are therefore limited. Having already secured the title earlier this month, PSG still top the Ligue 1 standings on 78 points, while Nice move up to fourth on 54. The home side dominated the opening half-hour and created chance after chance but it was the visitors who took the lead through Morgan Sanson as he marked his first start of the season by applying a clinical first-time finish to Badredine Bouanani's through-ball in the 35th minute. The lead lasted just six minutes as Fabian Ruiz scored with a sumptuous half-volley to level but any thoughts the PSG fans might have had of their side going on to dominate were extinguished 22 seconds into the second half when Sanson scored his second, volleying the ball into the net from close range. Having scored from their only two shots on target up to that point, the visitors went 3-1 up when Youssouf Ndayishimiye headed home a free kick in the 70th minute PSG, who face Premier League side Arsenal away in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday,enjoyed 75% of possession and managed to create twice as many goal-scoring opportunities but they were left frustrated by their own wayward finishing and some inspired goalkeeping from Marcin Bulka. With the clock ticking past 90 minutes and seven minutes added on for stoppages, Bulka pulled off a superb reflex save to deny Goncalo Ramos and he followed that up with another top-drawer stop of Vitinha's shot from the edge of the box, celebrating each save loudly. The Parisians continued to pour forward but Nice defended doggedly and held on to give their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League a considerable lift.
