Gerhard Struber keen to credit Bristol City supporters after Carabao Cup success
A sixth-minute header from captain Jason Knight and powerful 61st-minute finish from substitute Yu Hirakawa earned a 2-0 win over League Two MK Dons which puts the Championship club safely into round two. City head coach Struber said: 'My feeling was that the game might attract 4,000 or 5,000 fans and we end up getting 10,000. We can feel the appreciation of the supporters and the atmosphere here is so important to us. 'I hear the game against Charlton on Saturday is sold out, so we will have a packed crowd and that will be even more important against a team from the same level. 'In the first half we found it difficult to break MK Dons down but in the second there was much more power in our game.' Dons boss Paul Warne said: 'I was pleased with the effort shown. 'We made a lot of changes to get game-time into other players and they came really strong. 'Apart from the first five or six minutes we gave a good account of ourselves and I was pretty proud. I'm also pleased we came away with no injuries. 'Bristol City thoroughly deserved to go through and I have no complaints. It doesn't detract from the fact that we did very well and we can go into our next league game [at home to Cheltenham] full of confidence.'

Hirakawa 'feels good' in wing back position
Bristol City forward Yu Hirakawa could be deployed in a wing-back position when the Championship season starts, says head coach Gerhard has predominantly played as a right-sided winger or in an attacking midfield role for the City are short of left-sided wing-backs, with Cameron Pring expected to be out until October and Hirakawa has been deployed there during pre-season."I have very deep conversations with Yu, and I think he feels good in this position, and in the last two weeks he has grown in this position and he has shown us in the games good performances, so why not?" Struber told BBC Radio Bristol. "Nothing is clear, we are flexible with Yu, and he can play in more positions. I think that's a big advantage with him. Right now he looks good in this way." Struber also praised new striker Emil Riis, who scored three goals in two games against Plymouth and Real Valladolid this summer since signing from Championship rivals Preston."Already we realise how important he can be for us, this was the reason we have taken him," Struber said."He has a nose for goals, when you play forward, he's a player who can always come with good timing in the back of the defender."He is very interesting for us. I am happy also with how he has integrated and taken all the principles in his game."Joe Williams and Max Bird are not available for the trip to Sheffield United on Saturday as they also recover from injuries, but Struber said that Bird could feature against MK Dons in the Carabao Cup on 12 August.

Australia on brink of World Cup after dramatic late winner
Japan's Yu Hirakawa and Aziz Behich of Australia battle for the ball (COLIN MURTY) Australia moved to the brink of the World Cup after beating already qualified Japan 1-0 in Perth on Thursday thanks to Aziz Behich's 90th-minute winner. In front of a sell-out crowd of 57,226 at Optus Stadium, the Socceroos were outplayed for long periods by an inexperienced Japan side. Advertisement But then Riley McGree cut the ball back to defender Behich, who rifled a bullet into the corner for his first international goal in 13 years and trigger scenes of jubilation. After beating Japan for the first time since 2009, Australia are all but assured of a berth at next year's World Cup in North America. Before the game the Socceroos had a three-point lead and a significantly better goal difference over Saudi Arabia with two matches left. The win does not totally guarantee Australia's passage, with Saudi Arabia at Bahrain later on Thursday. Australia face Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on June 10 in their final Group C match in the battle for second behind Japan. Advertisement Teams that finish in the top two of the six-team group guarantee their automatic spot at the World Cup. After what had been a lacklustre performance for much of the game, Australia's last-gasp victory continued their turnaround since Tony Popovic was installed as coach in September. After becoming the first team to punch their tickets to the World Cup, Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu used the trip to Australia as an opportunity to experiment with his squad. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo and Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo started on the bench as Japan fielded three debutants in the starting line-up. Advertisement Crystal Palace's Daichi Kamada, playing his 41st international, was considerably their most experienced starting player. But Japan's youngsters completely dominated the first-half with 21-year-old wing back Kota Tawaratsumida impressing on debut. It was only a matter of time before Japan had a clear-cut chance at breaking the deadlock, with Yuito Suzuki making an attempt from long range on the half-hour mark. Japan continued to attack with debutant Yu Hirakawa firing a bullet just wide of the left post after beating outstretched goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. The break arrived at an good time for Australia. After being substituted on in the 64th minute, Kubo curled past the right post, before Behich stepped up late on with his priceless goal. tl/pst
