USM researcher earns recognition for tongue cancer treatment
GEORGE TOWN: A researcher from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has earned recognition at the recent European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) 2025 meeting in Vienna.
Associate Professor Dr Gokula Kumar Appalanaido was awarded the Top-Scoring Abstract Certificate for his paper on organ preservation and treatment for tongue cancer, which was presented at the conference.
He and his team presented the pioneering abstract and proffered paper entitled, "Hybrid HDRIBT followed by IMRT (HyBIRT) technique for the definitive treatment of oral tongue SCC (OTSCC) – first in human prospective study", placing it among the top five per cent of submissions globally.
A Top-Scoring Abstract Certificate is awarded to researchers whose abstract receives the highest score during the abstract review process, typically at a conference or symposium.
USM, in a statement today, said that the accolade also positions the university as the rising leader in advanced cancer research and treatment, particularly in the field of brachytherapy.
USM is also among a few institutions in the world that were given the prestigious 'Centre of Excellence' status for head and neck cancer brachytherapy by BrachyAcademy, a Netherlands-based scientific group.
Other members in the pioneering team that developed the HyBIRT technique at USM Bertam Medical Centre (PPUSMB) include Associate Professor Dr. Yusri Musa, Dr Ahmad Fakrurrozi Mohamad, Dr Jasmin Jalil and Associate Professor Dr Mohd Zahri Abdul Aziz.
The HyBIRT technique is a groundbreaking organ and function-preservation approach in the treatment of tongue cancer.
It represents a significant clinical advancement in the application of brachytherapy and radiotherapy - developed, implemented, and now internationally recognised, right here in Malaysia, it said, adding that the recognition at ESTRO 2025 is a testament to the strength of Malaysian talents in the global medical arena.
