Colin Farrell to be honoured at Zurich Film Festival
Colin Farrell will be honoured with the Zurich Film Festival's (ZFF) Golden Icon Award next month. Entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter says Farrell is being recognised for his performance in the upcoming psychological thriller Ballad of a Small Player and his career achievements. The Dubliner will receive the award at the festival on 27 September and will attend the gala premiere of Ballad of a Small Player. He will also take part in a ZFF Masters discussion the following day. Ballad of a Small Player is to be released in Irish cinemas on Friday 17 October and on Netflix on Wednesday 29 October. The film teams Farrell with Edward Berger, the director of the Oscar-winning Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front. "When his past and his debts start to catch up with him, a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation," says Netflix of the upcoming film. Ballad of a Small Player is based on the Lawrence Osborne book The Ballad of a Small Player and is adapted for the screen by Rowan Joffe (Tin Star, 28 Weeks Later). It also stars Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, Alex Jennings, and Tilda Swinton. The Zurich Film Festival runs from 25 September to 5 October.

Colin Farrell to be honoured with Golden Icon award at 2025 Zurich Film Festival
London, Aug 11 (PTI) Oscar-nominated actor Colin Farrell is set to be felicitated with the Golden Icon Award at the 20th edition of the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF), to be held from September 25 to October 5, the organisers announced on Monday. The Irish actor, best known for films such as 'Miami Vice", 'Minority Report", 'In Bruges", 'The Batman", 'The Lobster", 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer" and 'The Banshees of Inisherin", will receive the award at a gala event on September 27, where he will present his latest film 'Ballad of a Small Player". Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Edward Berger, the film is based on author Lawrence Osborne's 2014 novel and follows the story of a high-stakes gambler in Macau whose past and debts start to catch up with him. Whilst laying low, he encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation. Farrell will also participate in a ZFF Masters session on September 28, a press release stated. Festival director Christian Jungen described Farrell as 'one of the most passionate and charismatic character actors in auteur cinema". 'He's just as convincing as a villain as he is a romantic lead, or in complex roles that fall somewhere in between—like in Edward Berger's irresistible tragicomedy 'Ballad of a Small Player', where Colin captivates us as a roguish gambler and makes us root for his character. 'Colin Farrell has already worked with many great filmmakers, but under Edward Berger's direction, he truly reaches new heights. He carries the film from beginning to end and takes us on an emotional roller coaster that makes us laugh, cry, and marvel," he added. 'I'm beyond excited to walk its streets, drink its coffee and move amongst its people. It's both generous and humbling to have my years of making film recognised by such a storied festival, one that champions film from all corners of the globe. 'It will be an absolute pleasure to visit later this year and we are thrilled to be bringing 'Ballad of a Small Player' to audiences there," he added. Previous recipients of the Golden Icon Award include Kate Winslet, Jessica Chastain, Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant. 'Ballad of a Small Player" marks Berger's third consecutive film to be screened at ZFF, following 'All Quiet on the Western Front" and 'Conclave". Zurich Film Festival Embarks on New Era With Director-Led Buyout
The Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) is set to enter a new chapter following a management buyout of festival owners the NZZ group, led by Zurich festival director Christian Jungen. The buyout, unveiled on Thursday, ends a decade-long partnership between the festival and the Swiss media group. Jungen is joined in the buyout by festival vice director Reta Guetg, Swiss entrepreneur and TV host Max Loong, long-time ZFF President Felix E. Müller, and finance expert Marek Skreta. The new owners plan to take the Zurich festival to the next level, elevating the event to the top tier of European film festivals. 'We are a Zurich-based solution that has the trust of our partners and the filmmaking community. We are thinking big and we are thinking internationally. Our goal is to position the ZFF as one of Europe's premier film events, where audiences can see the films and stars that will go on to win Oscars later in the season. We want to bring joy and a celebratory atmosphere to the city and host a festival that Zurich can be proud of. To achieve this, we will secure new private partners and expand support from foundations, donors, and public institutions.' NZZ, which acquired the Zurich film festival ten years ago, will remain a key partner for the next three years, the new owners said. NZZ CEO Felix Graf described the move as a step toward further professionalization while preserving the festival's existing framework. The new leadership team combines deep festival experience with international business acumen. Jungen has overseen the ZFF's artistic direction since 2019, after spending a decade as a journalist at NZZ. Guetg, who has led industry and programming at ZFF for ten years, brings strong ties to the international film community. Müller, also editor-in-chief of NZZ am Sonntag, authored a book on the ZFF's history and is a central figure in Swiss cultural life. Loong and Skreta add expertise in sponsorship, hospitality, and global festival strategy, with Skreta having ties to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
