Race on for Muslim quota berths as cabinet rejig buzz grows

Bengaluru: While several MLAs are mounting pressure on Congress brass to reshuffle the cabinet following the govt's second anniversary celebrations on May 20, Muslim legislators are actively seeking positions under the minority quota. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The party leadership is said to have informally agreed to provide opportunities to those who did not receive ministerial positions in 2023 by replacing current ministers at the govt's mid-term point. Although, the govt will reach its halfway mark in Sept, aspiring legislators want chief minister Siddaramaiah to initiate changes after next week's anniversary event in Hospet. Siddaramaiah, on Friday, had hinted at a forthcoming reshuffle by suggesting former minister B Nagendra's probable return to the cabinet. Nagendra had stepped down last June following allegations over his alleged role in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation alleged scam. Having received a clean chit from investigators, he now seeks reinstatement. Whilst both experienced and new faces are vying for cabinet positions, the spotlight is on the Muslim quota. Basavaraj Rayareddi, economic adviser to the CM, said it would be the CM's call. "He will base his decision on a performance assessment," he said. There are nine Muslim legislators and the current cabinet features two of them — BZ Zameer Khan and Rahim Khan. The high command reportedly wants both replaced. But Zameer is seen as a confidante of the CM and many feel it would be hard to remove him. This has not deterred those eyeing his seat. Since Zameer represents Bengaluru, two from the city —NA Harris and Rizwan Arshad — are learnt to have already requested Siddaramaiah to consider them. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Former minister Tanveer Sait, who represents Narasimharaja seat in Mysuru, is also hoping to make it back to the cabinet. He has made his aspirations clear by arguing that Zameer's position should be considered as the quota for south Karnataka. Rahim Khan represents Bidar assembly segment, and the obvious argument is that he should be replaced by a Muslim legislator from north Karnataka. Saleem Ahmed, senior functionary and Congress chief whip in the legislative council, is also pushing for a seat along with Kaneez Fatima (Gulbarga North assembly constituency). Ahmed appears to have the edge due to his seniority. "While it is the prerogative of the CM to choose his ministers, the high command takes the final call. I missed out in 2023, but I am hopeful of getting an opportunity now," said Ahmed. Of the working presidents, Ahmed was the only one excluded ostensibly due to his council membership. Some MLCs advocate for increased upper house representation, currently limited to minister NS Boseraju. Assembly speaker UT Khader may be considered under the coastal region's Muslim quota.

Prayers held for troops in Karnataka mosques; Minister Zameer ready to be suicide bomber against Pakistan

Bengaluru: Special prayers were offered at mosques across Karnataka on Friday for the well-being of the Indian armed forces engaged in 'Operation Sindoor' against Pakistan. The Karnataka government had issued an official order directing the prayers. Minister for Waqf, Housing and Minority Affairs, B.Z. Zameer Ahmad Khan participated in the 'Jummah Namaz (Friday congregational prayer)' at a mosque in Seshadripuram, Bengaluru, where he prayed for the Indian soldiers defending the nation in the wake of the Pahalgam attack on innocent civilians and Pakistan's escalation of the tensions between the two nations. Reiterating his earlier statement, Minister Zameer said he is once again ready to become a suicide bomber against Pakistan if permitted. Speaking to the media, he said, 'Directions have been issued to all mosques across Karnataka to offer special prayers. I also attended Friday prayers and joined others in praying for the strength of our armed forces. This has been done throughout the state.' He added, 'Special prayers are being conducted not only in Karnataka but across the country. Our religious leaders have directed that such prayers be held nationwide for the success of 'Operation Sindoor' and the protection of our country.' When asked about criticism from the BJP regarding his statement about being ready to become a suicide bomber, Minister Zameer responded, 'The BJP has nothing better to do than criticise others. Have they done anything constructive? What did I say that day? I said I am willing to sacrifice my life for the country.' He continued, 'Even now, I stand by my words. If permitted, I will strap a bomb and become a suicide bomber. It is the BJP that holds power at the Centre. Who should give the order? The decision lies with the Prime Minister.' 'Let the Prime Minister decide. Here stands a minister ready to sacrifice his life for the country. If he gives permission, I am ready,' Zameer emphasised. 'No matter what I do for my country, it will never be enough. This is our motherland. If there is a necessity and permission is granted, I will do it. I send my wishes to our soldiers — may God bless them with strength and protection. I pray for this from my Allah,' he concluded. After directing special worship in temples across the state, the Karnataka government on Thursday had issued an order to conduct special prayers on Friday in mosques for the safety of the armed forces involved in 'Operation Sindoor' carried out against Pakistan. The operation has been launched in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed. Minister Zameer had issued the order and directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Karnataka State Waqf Board to ensure that special prayers were offered during Friday namaz in all mosques across the state. In the order, Minister Zameer stated, 'The Indian armed forces have successfully destroyed terrorist hideouts and shelters under 'Operation Sindoor', in response to the killing of 26 Indian tourists. To strengthen the morale of our soldiers who are eliminating terrorists and working to restore peace in the country, it is directed that special prayers be offered in all mosques affiliated with the Waqf Board, as well as in other mosques.' Temples across Karnataka offered special prayers on Thursday to deities, celebrating the success of 'Operation Sindoor' and praying for the well-being of Indian armed forces personnel, following directives from the state government.

Maldives Could Soon Become a Crypto Hub Thanks to Dubai Family Office's $9B Commitment

Honeymoons and luxury vacations could soon be outpaced by crypto as the main draw for the island nation of Maldives. A Dubai-based family office plans to invest up to $8.8 billion in a blockchain-focused financial hub in the Maldives, part of an effort by the island nation to expand beyond its reliance on tourism and fisheries and address mounting debt obligations. The investment, led by MBS Global Investments, will be deployed over five years and is structured around a new joint venture with the Maldives government. The planned capital outlay exceeds the country's GDP of around $7 billion. It will be funded through equity and debt, with preliminary commitments already exceeding $4 billion. Finance Minister Moosa Zameer described the initiative as a step toward economic diversification in an FT interview. Zameer said the Maldives faces 'the biggest challenge' in repaying external debt maturing over the next two years and that the project 'could help ease some of the financial pressures we are facing.' Under the proposed masterplan, the Maldives International Financial Centre will span 830,000 square meters, accommodate 6,500 residents, and generate employment for up to 16,000 people. It is being pitched as a global financial free zone centered on blockchain and digital asset services. MBS Global Investments manages $14 billion in assets and is the family office of Qatari royal Sheikh Nayef bin Eid Al Thani. The hub is one of the first major forays of the island-nation into the crypto and blockchain ecosystem. Sign in to access your portfolio
