Nintendo Is Delaying the ‘Legend of Zelda' Movie, but Only a Little Bit
Hoping that you'll still be oohing and ahhing over your new Switch 2, Nintendo has a teensy little bit of bad news: the Legend of Zelda movie is being delayed. The good news is that it's not for that long. Taking to Twitter rather than the Nintendo Today app this time, Shigeru Miyamoto released a brief statement confirming that Wes Ball's live-action Zelda movie will now release just over a month later than planned, on May 7, 2027. This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it… — 任天堂株式会社 (@Nintendo) June 9, 2025 'For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be,' the statement reads in part. 'Thank you for your patience.' The release date, and now this changed one, is pretty much all we've definitively heard about the Zelda movie since its shock announcement from Nintendo and Sony Pictures back in November 2023. Although recently rumors have begun to swirl about potential casting, so much of just how one of the most beloved gaming series of all time is going to make the leap to live-action (outside of the occasional funky TV ad, that is) remains to be seen. We'll bring you more on Sony and Nintendo's plans for the Zelda movie as and when we learn them.

Nintendo pushes back live-action Zelda movie to May 2027
Now that the Switch 2 is out in the wild, Nintendo is ready to announce some bad news. The upcoming live-action movie based on The Legend of Zelda has been delayed — though only by a few weeks. The film was previously slated to hit theaters on March 26th, 2027, but Nintendo now says that it will be out on May 7th instead. There wasn't an explicit reason given for the delay, but in a statement on X, Super Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto — who is serving as a producer on the movie — said that the move was made for 'production reasons' and that 'we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be.' There still aren't a lot of details about the movie itself, other than the fact that it will be live-action and directed by Wes Ball, who most recently helmed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The movie is part of Nintendo's larger goal of expanding beyond games through ventures like feature films, which started with the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, which pulled in more than $1 billion at the box office and is getting a sequel.
