Til Death Do Us Part—and Still Going: The Thomason Legacy of Love

Hewitt, TX (FOX 44) – After 70 years of marriage, a Stoney Brook couple is living proof that true love not only lasts but continues to blossom over time. They say diamonds are forever, but Wayne and Zelpha Thomason might just give them a run for their money. Zelpha and Wayne Thomason met in church, where Wayne was the new kid in town. As Zelpha recalls, the spark was immediate. 'They had just moved to Lawton,' Zelpha Thomason said. 'That was the first time they had come to church there. I can still see him getting up out of that pew, and I thought, who's that cute little, short new guy?' 'She was a very good, strong Christian girl,' Wayne Thomason said. 'I was very young in the church and needed someone stronger.' The wedding remains a beautiful memory, despite having little money at the time. 'My mother and I were living on not very much money,' Zelpha explained. 'I said, 'okay, I'll make my dress.' I just loved to sew. I still have my dress. I can't get into it, but I still have it.' From there the Thomason's started to grow their family. 'We just have two daughters, four grandchildren and we have great-grandchildren,' Wayne said. 'Which you never think of or expect to have until you get there.' Seventy years of marriage later, the Thomason's remain true to the vows they made on their wedding day. 'The lord was going to be in that vow, we would not destroy that vow of loving one another til death do you part,' Wayne said. '…I said I will work every day of my life,' Wayne added. 'Never let you down.' Looking back, Zelpha recalls what drew her to Wayne and the promises that built their 70-year journey. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Family holds vigil, urging police to do more months after Kansas City man killed

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thursday marked near the intersection of E. 6th Street and Monroe Avenue in northeast Kansas City. 'I'm grieving, but I'm not,' . 'I cannot fully mourn, at times, I will start to break. And I just stop, take a deep breath, cause I can't. I can't do it, especially looking at the babies.' KC man pleads guilty to federal gun charge from Chiefs' Super Bowl parade shooting Zelpha described Jonathan as an outdoorsman and a caring father. 'His number one priority and in things was his three children. He loved his kids; he would do anything for these kids. That was his number one,' she said. Zelpha said it's been tough for the three, ages 5, 6 and 17, to come to terms with what happened. 'They'd say 'this is the worst Thanksgiving ever, this is the worst Christmas ever. We want daddy!'' In the six months since Jonathan's death, Zelpha said Kansas City police haven't done enough. 'There's been no progress,' she said. 'The only thing I'm being told is, 'oh, calm down, it's still an open case, we haven't closed it.' There's been no arrest, no questioning, no nothing.' She said she's even brought information about the case to detectives. 'I feel as if it were their child, they would have someone in custody,' she said. 'Why aren't they doing more? Why aren't they doing something?' The night of Jonathan's death, Zelpha said he called her asking to live with her full time. He had lined up a job that he would've started the following Monday, and had even made arrangements to go to an inpatient rehab facility. 'He was he was ready to get everything under control,' she said. 'And that that happened that night. He's not just a homeless drug addict, I mean even if he was, c'mon they're human and have a life and have family somewhere.' KCPD investigating deadly shooting near 55th, Euclid Avenue She said there are people who know what happened to Jonathan, and they need to tell the police. 'He had three beautiful children. Let them have peace please,' she begged. 'Please, before it happens to you or someone you love, call in, do something, please.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
