National Festival 2025 Colorfully Concludes

The National Eritrean Festival 2025, which was officially opened by President Isaias Afwerki on 9 August at the Expo Compound, colorfully concluded yesterday with an official ceremony. The closing ceremony was attended by Ministers, senior Government and PFDJ officials, as well as numerous artists and festival participants from across the regions of the country. Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, noted the effort required to accommodate more than 50,000 visitors daily and commended the strong participation of committees, partners, and the disciplined involvement of the public. Ambassador Zemede also highlighted that the national festival serves as a forum where generations deepen their understanding, transfer noble societal values, and nurture competent and knowledgeable youth and children in one setting. Mr. Solomon Dirar presented a report outlining the achievements registered and challenges encountered during the week-long event. He stated that the festival was visited by about half a million people from across the country. The festival featured cultural and musical performances, traditional villages showcasing the cultures and traditions of the various ethnic groups, exhibitions of products by institutions and regions, children's educational and entertainment programs, book displays, painting and sculpture exhibitions, seminars, literature and poetry competitions, as well as research presentations, among others. The closing ceremony was highlighted by cultural and artistic performances, with awards presented to individuals and groups who contributed to and participated in the successful implementation of the national festival. An official reception was organized for Olympian athlete Biniam Girmay upon his return home after participating in the 2025 Tour de France. The ceremony was held yesterday, 7 August, at the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers Hall. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, congratulated Biniam for his outstanding performance at the Tour de France and said that he is following in the footsteps of professional athletes such as Daniel Teklehaimanot and Merhawi Kudus in shining at international cycling competitions. Ambassador Zemede also expressed his expectation that young cyclists will continue the legacy and place their country at the center stage. He further announced that, as a result of the significant influence Biniam has created at both African and global levels—and in recognition of his potential to promote the country's development programs internationally and positively inspire youth—the United Nations Development Programme has appointed him as its Honorary Ambassador in Eritrea. Olympian athlete Biniam Girmay, for his part, expressed gratitude for the warm reception accorded to him, saying it will strengthen his dedication to achieving even better performances on the international stage. Biniam Girmay has made history by becoming the only African cyclist to participate in the Tour de France for three consecutive years. The festival is scheduled to take place from 9 to 17 August at the Expo Grounds in Asmara. Noting that 'displays depicting our cultural diversity and unity have been prepared,' Ambassador Zemede said the festival will feature cultural and musical performances, traditional villages representing the cultures and traditions of the various ethnic groups in the country, exhibitions of products by various institutions and regions, children's educational and entertainment programs, book displays, paintings and sculptures exhibitions, as well as seminars, among others. Ambassador Zemede also underlined that the National Festival, beyond being an entertainment event, is a reflection of the unity and cultural diversity of the Eritrean people. World Museum Day was observed at the national level today at the National Museum of Eritrea under the theme 'Museums and the Rapid Transformation of Society.' The occasion in which Ministers and other dignitaries attended was officially opened by Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports. The program featured displays portraying the history, culture, and the Eritrean people's struggle for independence. The display included depictions of the armed struggle from 1976 until independence, a number of paintings by veteran liberation fighters, as well as ancient heritage artifacts. Dr. Yosief Libseqal, Director of the National Museum, stated that World Museum Day—marked annually on 18 May—is being commemorated for the 48th time globally and for the 31st time nationally. Eritrea: Schools Independence Day Week commences in Central Region

Schools Independence Week in connection with the 34th Independence Day anniversary has officially commenced today at Deb'at hall in Akria sub-zone under the theme 'Our Cohesion-Our Armour'. The Schools Week has been officially opened by Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the Central Region. Mr. Belai Habtegabir, head of the education office in the region, said that the commencement of Schools Independence Week beyond providing academic education has significant contribution in nurturing competent students, inculcating nationalism and preserving the noble societal values. The event was attended by Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, Mr. Abraham Semere, chairman of the regional Assembly as well as other officials in the region. Schools Independence Day Week in the Central Region will be conducted in 116 kindergartens, 79 elementary, 40 junior as well as in 22 high schools featuring various programs.
