German auto parts giant strengthens tech ties with Chinese automakers

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany, July 10 (Xinhua) -- German auto parts giant ZF is intensifying its technology cooperation with Chinese automakers, the company said on Thursday. In a press release, ZF said it is benefiting from the increasing importance of chassis technology, driven by the future trends of e-mobility, software-defined vehicles, and automated driving. During its Chassis Tech Day, the company showcased its modular "Chassis 2.0" approach, which integrates smart actuators, system expertise, and software know-how to unlock new avenues for growth. Peter Holdmann, member of ZF's Board of Management and head of Division Chassis Solutions, said the company is targeting 33 percent of the global chassis technology market by the end of the decade. At the core of Chassis 2.0 is the industrialization of by-wire technologies, which have already been implemented in vehicles from Chinese brands. The NIO ET9 is the first mass-produced car in China equipped with ZF's pure steer-by-wire system. "This is a prime example of how Chinese and German companies can leverage their respective strengths for collaborative innovation," said Zhang Hui, vice president of NIO Europe. He added that China-Germany cooperation thrives on the agility and innovation capacity of Chinese firms, paired with the engineering, safety, and industrial expertise of German manufacturers. ZF also revealed that it has received two additional orders from Chinese automakers for its latest chassis technologies and has secured a contract with luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz. The company has been doubling down on its investment in China, which has gone into a new R&D centre and 10 newly-built or expanded factories in the past two years. Today, nearly one-third of ZF's 161 global production sites are located in China.

Hong Kong welcomes 213,000 mainland tourists as ‘golden week' break starts

More than 213,000 mainland Chinese visitors flocked to Hong Kong on the first day of the Labour Day 'golden week' holiday on Thursday, looking forward to some hiking, treating their taste buds at street food stalls and restaurants, and enjoying a dazzling drone show in the night sky above Victoria Harbour. Advertisement Immigration Department data showed that 253,200 visitors had entered the city as of 9pm. That included 213,181 from the mainland, compared with 181,400 for the whole day last year, while more than 281,000 Hong Kong residents had departed for other destinations. In the afternoon, hundreds of early birds gathered at the Wan Chai temporary promenade hours ahead of a 12-minute Labour Day drone show at 8pm. The event featured 1,000 drones weaving through the skies above Victoria Harbour, forming shapes such as firecrackers, dancing qilin – mythical hoofed beasts – and traditional buns in a nod to the Cheung Chau Bun Festival. High Island Reservoir is another popular spot on the tourist trail. NIO marks milestone with 60th power swap station in Europe

MUNICH, Germany, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO on Tuesday announced the opening of its 60th Power Swap Station in Europe, as the company continues to expand its energy infrastructure across the continent. The latest facility, located in Sankt Augustin, Germany, is part of NIO's broader efforts to offer alternatives to conventional EV charging methods and enhance user convenience. "The Chinese and German automotive industries are highly complementary," said Zhang Hui, vice president of NIO Europe. He told Xinhua that the milestone reflects the growing synergy between China and Germany in the automotive sector. "NIO is committed to deepening cooperation not only in technology, but also in infrastructure and user services," Zhang said. According to him, NIO aims to build a long-term presence in Europe through local partnerships and sustainable mobility initiatives. "We are not here for short-term gains. We are committed to building a lasting presence in Europe, working with local partners, governments and communities to bring innovative solutions that make electric mobility more accessible and more sustainable," he said. Hubert Aiwanger, deputy minister-president of Bavaria, also welcomed the development. "Many internal combustion engine vehicles are still in use here in Bavaria and across Germany, but more people are choosing electric cars. That makes user-friendliness all the more important, particularly when it comes to range," he said. Aiwanger praised battery swapping as a meaningful innovation. "With this system, users can simply and conveniently swap their battery and continue driving." He said he is confident that Chinese companies will continue to expand in market share due to their provision of quality products and services. Europe has become a strategic focus for NIO's international development. In addition to Germany, the company operates in the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, aligning its rollout with markets that are actively supporting the transition to electric vehicles. NIO stated that it is exploring how its energy services can enhance electricity grid stability in Europe. The company said that its infrastructure is designed to adjust energy usage in response to peak demand and renewable energy availability, as countries work to integrate more clean energy into their power systems.
