You're on your own, Zim minister tells countrymen needing healthcare in South Africa

With public hospitals in South Africa reportedly turning away foreign nationals, many Zimbabweans needing healthcare in SA hoped their government might intervene. But Zimbabwe's Minister of Justice, Ziyambi Ziyambi, has made it clear that won't happen. A member of Parliament (MP) in Zimbabwe asked him about the government's plans to help citizens blocked from South African hospitals. 'They are being denied health services,' the MP argued. 'What is the government doing to ensure Zimbabwean citizens in South Africa can access healthcare? That's the answer we want…' But Ziyambi's response left little room for hope. He stated bluntly that the Zimbabwean government's limited budget could barely sustain those within its borders, let alone those who had emigrated. 'We can barely afford to help those in Zimbabwe,' he responded. Ziyambi said his government could not look for people outside the country to assist them. He insisted that Zimbabweans abroad left of their own will, mostly for work, and must now follow the laws and systems of their host countries. 'Even if a South African is in Zimbabwe, their government doesn't fund their treatment here.' Groups such as Operation Dudula have allegedly been at the forefront of mobilising citizens to block illegal foreigners in hospitals. They argue that South Africans should be put first. The groups also say that the immigrants should pay for the services they access. Last week, Health MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko told TV news channel Newzroom Afrika that it was painful that people are being blocked from accessing healthcare services, and she did not agree with it. Proteas to meet Black Caps in Tri-Series final after beating Zim

Ruben Hermann and Rassie van der Dussen made half-centuries as the Proteas romped to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in their third match of the T20 Tri-Series at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday afternoon. The result saw the Proteas bounce back from defeat against New Zealand on Wednesday. Chasing Zimbabwe's target of 145, Hermann and captain Van der Dussen were the star performers, sharing a 106-run partnership. They set the ship back on course after Zimbabwe's Tinotenda Maposa made early inroads in the first power play, removing openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius (4) and Reeza Hendricks (6). Though he could not carry the Proteas over the line after being bowled by Richard Ngavara, Herman's 63 off 36 balls played a crucial role in getting the Proteas their second win of the series, which confirmed a place in the final on Saturday with a game in hand. He was accompanied by Dewald Brevis at the end as the Proteas got home with 16 balls to spare. Opener Brian Bennett belted 61 runs off 43 balls to help the home team to a respectable total of 144 for six. Bennett was the mainstay of the innings, with most of the Chevrons' top and middle orders struggling to get going. He paced his innings well, going at a good strike rate of 141.86 while scoring seven fours and three sixes. The only other major contribution came via the unbeaten 36 of Ryan Burl, who fought against accurate Proteas death bowling while losing partners at the other end. The Proteas pacers did not give Bennett and his opening partner Wessly Madhevere any room to breathe after they won the toss and bowled. It took almost three overs for Zimbabwe to get the ball to the boundary. And just when they were getting their groove on, Cobin Bosch had Madhevere caught at mid-off by Van der Dussen for 13. Bosch continued with his persistent good length, leading to the dismissal of Clive Madande, who hit the ball straight back at him for a caught-and-bowled. With Bennett and Sikandar Raza in the middle, Zimbabwe concluded the first power play on 29/2, but Raza had a short stay at the crease, being caught at deep square by Nandre Burger off the bowling of spinner Nqaba Peter's tossed up delivery. Bennett stayed composed despite losing partners and, with Burl, put on a stand of 78 runs off 47 deliveries. The 21-year-old Bennett progressed to his third career fifty before the Proteas bowlers regrouped to counter. Ngidi outfoxed the dangerous Bennett with a slower ball, which bowled him in the 15th over. In the next over, Burger removed Tashinga Musekiwa for a golden duck, caught in the deep by Dewald Brevis. The Proteas' death bowlers mixed it up in the closing overs with yorkers and slower balls to restrict the Zimbabweans. Bosch finished with economical figures of two for 16 runs. South Africa play New Zealand on Tuesday (1pm) before taking on the Black Caps in the final on Saturday (1pm).

ABU DHABI, July 18 (MENA) - The UAE has donated medical equipment worth dlrs 700,000 to Zimbabwe, bolstering the country's emergency-care capabilities and saving lives nationwide, TV BRICS reported. The donation, which includes 74 ICU ventilators and 34 tons of essential medical supplies, was officially handed over in Harare. The handover ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care of Zimbabwe, Sleiman Kwidini, and the UAE Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jassim Mohamed Al-Hassanini. The aid comes at a time when Zimbabwe is modernizing its healthcare system. Kwidini noted that the equipment will provide significant assistance to patients with life-threatening conditions. Hassanini reaffirmed the UAE's ongoing commitment to Zimbabwe through development and humanitarian cooperation. "We hope this medical assistance will have a positive impact on the lives of Zimbabweans," he said. Health experts anticipate that the new ICU ventilators will significantly improve survival rates in intensive-care units across the country. (MENA) R R N/

Call on Joburg to act on illegal bus stations

The unregulated bus stations are allegedly a hub for illicit transport and undocumented immigration. Transport sector role players have called on authorities to investigate and close illegal bus stations operating in Joburg. African Unite Borders Bus Trucks Association chair Phumudzo Mukhwathi said yesterday there were two illegal bus stations in Braamfontein and another one near Park Station. Frustration by long-standing inaction 'These illegal stations have been operating for a long time and the government did not even try to shut them down despite the fact that we have alerted them on several occasions,' said Mukhwathi. He said the matter was reported to the City of Joburg and MMC for transport Kenny Kunene, 'but no action was taken'. 'Honestly, this is unfair competition because there are no rules in the illegal bus stations and we were also reliably informed that some of the buses using these stations are used to transport illegal things from South Africa to Zimbabwe,' he said. Police response questioned In January last year, police intercepted one of the buses ferrying a group of undocumented immigrants from Zimbabwe. ALSO READ: Bus driver arrested after transporting nearly 80 undocumented Zimbabweans Mukhwathi said there were allegations last year that some of the buses were using fraudulent permits and they alerted the police. But he said they did not get feedback about the investigation. 'If the city continues to fail us, we are going to take legal action to push them to act,' he said. Transport union promises to coordinate with city officials South African Transport and Allied Workers Union spokesperson Amanda Tshemese said they would investigate the allegations and work with relevant authorities to address the situation. 'We will engage with the MMC as well as the mayor. It only makes sense if we can all attend to the matter,' said Tshemese. 'You can't have illegal companies or immigrants operating in South Africa when you have millions of South Africans who are unemployed.' Illegal activity Nozibusiso Khambule, from an organisation fighting against illegal immigrants known as the March in March Movement, said they were aware of the illegal bus stations operating in the city. ALSO READ: WATCH: Commuters boycott the Metrobus tapping system Khambule said the operations, allegedly owned by Zimbabwean nationals, were a manifestation of the broader issue of illegal economic activities by foreign nationals 'that undermine the rule of law'. She said the existence of illegal bus stations created an unfair competitive environment for legitimate South African and foreign-owned businesses. 'Businesses using legitimate stations pay rent and taxes, adhere to municipal bylaws and safety regulations, and contribute to the formal economy,' she said. 'Illegal operations, by contrast, bypass these costs and regulations, allowing them to offer services at artificially low prices. 'This not only siphons off revenue from legitimate operators, but also risks the safety of commuters and contributes to urban decay, congestion and lawlessness in the CBD.' City of Joburg had not responded to questions by the time of publication. NOW READ: Zimbabwean man accused of raping landlord's daughter denied bail

Chinese firms boost Zimbabwe's job market, says experts

HARARE, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The increasing presence of Chinese companies is boosting Zimbabwe's job market, a Zimbabwean economic analyst said Thursday. Dereck Goto, an economic analyst and political commentator based in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, told Xinhua that the ever-increasing employment opportunities brought by Chinese firms, particularly in the mining sector, also mirror a wider trend of economic engagement between China and Africa. In recent years, Zimbabwe has seen a growing number of Chinese companies that continuously place job advertisements in local media for key positions, indicating their booming interest in local talent. "In the short term, the rise in job advertisements represents the setup phase. These firms are hiring essential technical and operational staff to establish a local presence and address immediate project needs," Goto said. "Looking ahead, Chinese companies have the potential to become employers of choice," he said, while calling for them to invest more in localization, skills transfer and long-term talent development. In a separate interview, Executive Director of the Southern African Research and Documentation Center Munetsi Madakufamba said that the growth in the number of Chinese companies seeking local professionals was a combination of factors, including the growing Chinese presence in the country and a response to local employment demands. "We do need to ensure Zimbabweans have the requisite skills to fully benefit from those opportunities; we need a serious upgrading of local skills to maximize the potential," Madakufamba said.
