Amitabh Bachchan has paid a homage to his Don director Chandra Barot, who died on Sunday morning following a seven-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was 86. What's Happening Amitabh Bachchan, 82, shared a tribute on his personal blog for the filmmaker with whom he worked on the 1978 blockbuster Don. In his post, the screen icon called Chandra Barot more than a family friend whose loss was difficult for him to put in words. "Another and another sad moment.. Dear dear friend and my director of DON - Chandra Barot passed away this morning.. It is difficult to put into words the loss.. we worked together yes, but he was more a family friend than any else.. I can only pray," Amitabh Bachchan wrote. Chandra Barot, The OG Don Director Chandra Barot made his directorial debut with Don, a project that came to life after actor-producer Nariman Irani faced financial trouble following the failure of Zindagi Zindagi (1972). To help Irani, Barot and his team took on the project and brought in writers Salim-Javed, whose script had been previously rejected by leading names like Dev Anand, Dharmendra and Jeetendra. Following Don, Barot directed the Bengali films Aashrita (1989) and Pyar Bhara Dil (1991). However, several of his other projects-including Boss and Neil Ko Pakadna... Impossible, remained incomplete or unreleased. His legacy lived on through the Don franchise, which expanded years later. In 2006, Shah Rukh Khan starred in a reimagined version of Don, after director Farhan Akhtar's banner Excel Entertainment bought the rights to the 1978 movie. Farhan Akhtar, who is set to direct the third installment of Don, paid tribute to Chandra Barot on Instagram. His post read, "Saddened to learn that the director of the OG Don is no more. RIP Chandra Barot-ji. Deepest condolences to the family." In A Nutshell Megastar Amitabh Bachchan remembered his Don director Chandra Barot in a blog post after the filmmaker died at the age of 86. Back in the late '70s, a filmmaker trapped in heavy debt decided to roll the dice on a small-budget movie. Released in 1978, the film wasn't expected to do wonders; it was just a last attempt to clear dues. But destiny had different plans. With a gripping story, memorable characters, and unexpected public love, the film turned into a surprise box office success. Which film is this? Here we are talking about the 1978 action thriller 'Don', helmed by late Chandra Barot, who has passed away at the age of 86. He was ill for a long time. Don is counted among iconic Bollywood films, which not only gave Big B the image of an angry young man. But also made the producer rich. The budget of the film was around Rs 70 lakh, which included production and marketing costs. It was a medium budget film for that time, because in the 1970s, big budget films were usually less than Rs 1 crore. It was produced by Nariman Irani. Salim-Javed's script and Amitabh Bachchan's powerful double role made this film special for the cinema lovers. However, producer Nariman Irani, who was a cameraman, had his first film, Zindagi Zindagi, with Sunil Dutt flop badly, after which he had a huge debt of about 12 lakh rupees. To get out of this problem, Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Chandra Barot and Manoj Kumar advised him to make another film, which was Don. When Dev Anand and Jeetendra rejected Don However, getting the script was not easy, as writers Salim-Javed were reluctant to sell the script for a long time. But director Chandra Barot and producer Nariman Irani finally bought it. However, it was rejected by Dev Anand, Prakash Mehra and Jeetendra before Amitabh Bachchan said yes. Initially, the script did not even have a name. While there was a script related to a character called Don. When Nariman Irani approached Salim, he said, 'We have a breakfast script lying around which no one is taking.' And Nariman said okay. And this is how the film Don was made. How Was The box office reception of Don? Talking about the box office collection, it earned a net collection of Rs 2.5 crores and a gross collection of Rs 3.2 crores in India. The worldwide gross was around Rs 3.5 crores because at that time, the release of Hindi films in the foreign market was limited. The situation was such that Don turned out to be one of the highest-grossing films of 1978 and was declared a blockbuster.

New Delhi: Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot, best known for directing the 1978 cult classic Don starring Amitabh Bachchan, died on Sunday. He was 86. The news of his death was confirmed by his wife, Deepa Barot. Speaking to TOI, she said, "He had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for the past seven years." She added that he was undergoing treatment at Guru Nanak Hospital under the care of Dr Manish Shetty and had also been admitted to Jaslok Hospital earlier. Farhan Akhtar, who is directing the third installment of Don, paid tribute to Chandra Barot on Instagram. His post read, "Saddened to learn that the director of the OG Don is no more. On Tuesday evening, a prayer meeting was held in Mumbai in memory of late actor Deb Mukherjee. His bereaved son, Ayan Mukerji, greeted media, requesting them to respect his family's privacy in difficult times. Several members of the film industry, including Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, and Siddharth Roy Kapur, attended the prayer meet. Born in Kanpur, Deb Mukherjee was part of the famous Mukherjee-Samarth family, whose involvement with the film industry spans four generations, beginning in the 1930s. His mother, Satidevi, was the only sister of Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. His brothers included successful actor Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, who married Bollywood star Tanuja. His nieces are Kajol and Rani Mukerji. Deb had been married twice. His daughter, Sunita, from his first marriage, is married to director Ashutosh Gowariker. His son, filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, is from his second marriage. He worked in movies like Sambandh, Adhikar, Zindagi Zindagi, Haiwan, Mai Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Karate, Baaton Baaton Mein, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, and others.
