Published on: Friday, May 23, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 23, 2025 Text Size: Zulkarnain said the RM1.5 million claim should serve as a deterrent against slander, bullying and public shaming, even in cases of differing political views. Kota Kinabalu: Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar is suing two individuals for defamation, seeking RM1.5 million in damages and a public apology. The target is a student activist linked to a demonstration at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and another described as a cybertrooper affiliated with PAS and Parti Warisan. The letters were sent via registered post on Thursday and would be delivered in person by Zulkarnain's legal team, led by lawyer Boestamam of Tetuan Boestamam Ahmad & Co. Notices will also be published through news portals. The suit against the student stems from a Facebook post where he allegedly referred to Zulkarnain as 'a foolish old man choosing chaos.' The other individual is accused of posting defamatory remarks on Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, calling Zulkarnain 'a devil, foolish and stupid old man'. Zulkarnain said the RM1.5 million claim should serve as a deterrent against slander, bullying and public shaming, even in cases of differing political views. Coach keen to keep progressing in quadrant after Asian Cup victory

KUALA LUMPUR: National sepak takraw quadrant coach Zulkarnain Mohamed Arif is determined to keep his charges improving after winning the Asian Cup title at the Titiwangsa Stadium yesterday (May 12). Zulkarnain said Malaysia is still learning the ropes in the relatively new quadrant event - which features four players a side - and has weaknesses in certain areas which must be improved on. He stressed that his charges cannot afford to be complacent, especially with the Thai King's Cup (July) and the Thailand Sea Games (December) still left to play this year. "We are still finding our rhythm in the quadrant and have to keep working on improving ourselves. Our serving and our double and triple blocking techniques are still relatively weak," said Zulkarnain yesterday. "We are expecting Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar to be our main rivals at the King's Cup and the Sea Games. We know they are very strong sides so we have to be prepared." Zulkarnain believes Malaysian players have a lot of potential in the quadrant event. "The quadrant event is still new to us and we have been trying out many new strategies," he said. "Our progress has been positive so far this year and we have a lot of players who are capable of performing well in this discipline. We will select the most suitable players according to the situation during the tournament." Afifuddin Razali, Amirul Zazwan Amir, Norfaizzul Abd Razak and Shahalril Aiman Halim defeated Japan's Wataru Narawa, Toshinaka Naito, Yuki Sato and Ryota Haruhara 15-8, 15-11 in the Asian Cup quadrant final yesterday. Malaysia's Noraizat Mohd Nordin and Aidil Aiman Azwawi, however, lost to Thailand (Boonkoom Tipwong-Sirisak Anuloon) 7-15, 15-10, 15-12 in the doubles final which was also played yesterday. National doubles coach Aswadi Abdullah said Thai's versatile players gave them the winning edge in the match. "Thailand's players are able to play in a variety of positions. They are equally adept as a tekong, feeder or a killer. This is what makes them strong," said Aswadi. "We don't have many players capable of doing that yet. We have been slow (to develop such players) as we do not have that many doubles tournaments here in Malaysia yet." Aswadi said he was nevertheless pleased with the fighting spirit shown by his players throughout the tournament. The Asian Cup has now moved into the regu event which begins with the group stage today.

NGO warns of potential challenges in seat negotiations

Published on: Tuesday, May 13, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 13, 2025 Text Size: Zulkarnain said a clash between GRS and BN at the 17th state election would be hard to avoid. Kota Kinabalu: An NGO warned of potential challenges in seat negotiations between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional (BN) following the attempted coup led by Sabah BN Chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin against Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Sabah-based Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) also said the State's ruling coalition was being continuously attacked by Umno, the BN lynchpin. 'Compounding matters is that Bung still heads Sabah Umno. Hence, a concrete decision in terms of seat negotiations between GRS and BN will be difficult to achieve,' G57 Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said in a statement. He said a clash between GRS and BN at the 17th state election would be hard to avoid. However, clashes between the coalitions should be perceived as 'friendly competition' as they are part of the same team at the federal level. He was commenting on the agreement between Pakatan Harapan (BH) Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his BN counterpart Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for the coalitions to work together in facing the Sabah state election. Top Sabah PH leaders have described the central leadership decision as a rational move, given the nature of the coalition's relationship at the federal level. Two years ago, Bung failed to overthrow Hajiji in a coup later dubbed the 'Kinabalu Move'. Last month, an analyst told FMT that an electoral pact in Sabah between BN and PH for the impending state election would be tricky, chiefly due to the presence of Bung. James Chin of Tasmania University said the Sabah BN Chairman represented the 'biggest problem' for the proposed alliance. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah Umno lacking credible leaders, says NGO

Published on: Monday, May 05, 2025 Published on: Mon, May 05, 2025 Text Size: 'In 1996, I actively opposed Umno when disagreeing with Tun Mahathir's decision to rotate the Sabah Chief Minister position through the Kumpulan Belia Pencinta Nusa (Cintanusa),' said Zulkarnain. Kota Kinabalu: Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar opines that Sabah Umno has lost credible leaders and 'are left with immature people'. 'As an independent activist active in Sabah since 1995, the country's laws permit me to voice opinions even without being registered as a member of any political party,' said Zulkarnain in a statement, Saturday. He said this in response to the party's Strategic Communications Director Datu Rosman Ahir Zaman who said he (Zulkarnain) has no right to interfere in Umno's internal affairs and is disloyal to the party. 'In 1996, I actively opposed Umno when disagreeing with Tun Mahathir's decision to rotate the Sabah Chief Minister position through the Kumpulan Belia Pencinta Nusa (Cintanusa),' said Zulkarnain. 'When the Chief Minister rotation was cancelled, I returned to supporting Umno and later opposed Umno again after (Sabah head) Bung Moktar collaborated with (Warisan's) Shafie Apdal to topple (CM) Hajiji through a failed coup, as an activist rather than an active Umno member. 'I also confirm to never being a member of any Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component and have been running my own business in Kuala Lumpur since 2018,' he said. 'Bung's main problem now is placing the wrong individuals in Sabah Umno's leadership line-up. A simple example, more qualified leaders like former Umno Youth Chief Datuk Julkarnain should have been given this responsibility,' he said. He said almost all of Rosman's statements are not fact-based and appear completely unhelpful in convincing Sabahans to support Umno again. 'When Warisan governed Sabah in 2018, Rosman was never seen criticising Shafie, but now acts like a hero attacking the GRS-PH government. 'It is regrettable that Rosman cannot distinguish Umno's real enemies in Sabah,' he said. He said it was Warisan that toppled Umno in 2018 through undemocratic means, causing Umno to lose power in Sabah. 'When Warisan governed Sabah, the State's economy declined sharply, proven by GDP dropping from Malaysia's highest rate of 8.2 per cent to just 0.5 per cent within two years. 'The appointment of cronies to top posts ('Sempornaisation'), failure to attract foreign investors, proposing an island for Filipinos and many other weaknesses, yet all this has blinded Rosman who sees GRS-PH as the enemy instead of Warisan,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Naming Bung Moktar as Sabah 'poster boy' will speed up Umno's decline - G57

Bung Moktar KOTA KINABALU (May 2): Umno's plan to place its Sabah chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin as the 'poster boy' is expected to hasten the party's undoing in the coming state elections, said Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar. Zulkarnain recalled that Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) had only won 14 out of 31 seats it contested in the 16th state elections, and he does not foresee that Umno Sabah will rise again, especially after its failed attempt with Parti Warisan (Warisan) to topple Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in 2023. 'Bung's rough attitude is also one of the reasons for the rakyat's increasing hate towards Umno. 'As a rakyat of Sabah, I dare not put the future of the state in the hands of a leader like him. 'Regarding their plan to place him as a 'poster boy', I personally expect this action to expedite the process of burying Umno in the coming state elections. 'Insyallah, looking at the current political situation and the continuous efforts of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-Pakatan Harapan (GRS-PH) government to attract foreign investors and solve the rakyat's problems in stages, independent political analysts' expectations that Umno-BN will only be able to win seven seats are likely to come true,' he said in a statement. Zulkarnain was responding to Umno Sabah information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir's recent suggestion for Bung to be BN's poster boy for the 17th Sabah state elections, as he is seen as the most suitable figure to front the coalition and Umno Sabah's tradition for the post to be given to the state BN chairman. Meanwhile, Zulkarnain said Umno-BN should be realistic in its ambition to rule Sabah again after the next state elections. Responding to Suhaimi's statement yesterday that the coalition will contest 40 out of 73 state seats this year, he questioned whether this decision was made by Umno's Supreme Council members or otherwise. 'As a former chief political activist in Umno's frontline, I advise Suhaimi to go down to the field often to obtain the rakyat's reaction on their support towards Umno-BN in Sabah. 'I would also like to remind that in the 2016 General Elections, Suhaimi himself had lost in the Gum-Gum state seat,' he added. Yesterday, BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it is premature to name a 'poster boy' candidate for any state before a general or state election is officially called. He said that following a meeting with the Sabah Umno leadership on Wednesday, he had provided guidelines for the party in the state to face the state election. 'I think it's best if the matter of selecting a menteri besar or chief minister is set aside for now. The focus should be on ensuring victory for the candidates fielded. 'I will personally consult with the Sabah Umno leadership to determine who is acceptable to the state assemblymen and who can lead the state government once any party coalition secures the majority of seats in Sabah,' he told reporters after attending the Lembaran Kasih Aidilfitri celebration with the Felda community at Padang Awam Palong 3 in Jempol.
