(File pic) KOTA BHARU : A teenager pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to a charge of raping a 15-year-old female student in the store room of a secondary school in Kuala Krai in April last year. The 18-year-old was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, but as the accused was a minor at the time of the alleged offence, sentencing provisions under Section 91 of the Child Act 2001 will apply. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad proposed bail at RM15,000, while defence counsel Wan Norfarhan Liyana Wan Baharunddin requested a lower amount, saying that the teen's parents worked as daily-wage labourers. She also informed the court that the accused was scheduled to begin matriculation studies next month. Judge Zulkifli Abllah allowed bail at RM5,000 with a condition that the accused does not tamper with prosecution witnesses. He also fixed June 26 for mention of the case.

KOTA BARU: Two friends pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Wednesday (May 28) to charges of robbing six convenience stores early this month in the Pengkalan Chepa and Kota Bharu areas. , 20, a person with disabilities (OKU), and Mohammad Lukman Akiff Mohamed, 28, were accused of gang robbery of six male store workers, aged between 21 and 31 years old, involving cash amounting to RM1,211.30. They were accused of these offences at six convenience stores around the city including in Pengkalan Chepa between 3.30am and 6.10am, on May 10 and 11. The charges were framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and whipping, if convicted. Both men also claimed trial to attempting to rob a male worker, aged 24, at a convenience store in Jalan Sultan Ibrahim here at 6am on May 12. The charge, framed under Section 393 of the Penal Code, was read together with Section 34 of the same code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of seven years and a fine, upon conviction. Judge Zulkifli Abllah did not allow bail for both defendants and set June 29 for the case mention. Meanwhile, at a Magistrate's Court here, Muhammad Zulhusni pleaded not guilty to the charge of possessing a fake pistol on Jalan Sultanah Zainab here at 6.45am on May 12. He was charged under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum prison sentence of one year or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid granted bail of RM5,000 and set June 29 for the case mention. - Bernama

KOTA BARU, May 27 — An 18-year-old youth was reportedly charged in the Sessions Court here today with raping an underage schoolgirl in a storage room at a Kuala Krai school last year. According to a report in Berita Harian, he was charged before Judge Zulkifli Abllah under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction. The accused is alleged to have raped a 15-year-old girl, at around 3pm in April last year. He reportedly pleaded not guilty to the charge, with lawyer Wan Norfarhan Liyana Wan Baharuddin representing him. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad was said to have requested bail be set at RM15,000. However, Wan Norfarhan reportedly appealed for a lower amount not exceeding RM3,000, citing her client's recent offer to enrol in a matriculation programme starting June 23, which requires financial preparation. 'At the time of the incident, he was 17. He is now 18. His parents work as a factory worker and a labourer, and they cannot afford a high bail amount,' she was quoted as saying. The court reportedly set bail at RM5,000 and fixed June 26 for document submission and the next case mention.

KOTA BHARU: An unemployed man pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today, to a charge of stabbing his brother with a stingray tail spine in Kampung Pauh Jabit, Beris Kubur Besar, Bachok, earlier this month. Mohd Izwan Sukarnor, 36, made the plea after the charge was read out, before Judge Zulkifli Abllah. He was charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to his elder brother, Mohd Fakhran, 40, using a stingray tail spine at a house in Kampung Pauh Jabit, Beris Kubur Besar, at around 9.30 am on May 1. The charge was framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, and, read together with Section 326A of the same law, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine or whipping, if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli did not offer bail for Mohd Izwan, who was unrepresented, citing the fact that the victim was the accused's own brother. The court did not grant bail to the accused and set June 16 for mention.

The accused, Mohd Izwan Sukarnor, 36, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before judge Zulkifli Abllah. According to the facts of the case, the accused is alleged to have intentionally caused serious injury by stabbing Mohd Fakhran, 40, with a stingray tailbone at a house in Kampung Pauh Jabit on May 1 at 9.30am. The accused was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years' jail and a fine or whipping upon conviction. Under Section 326A, the sentence may be doubled from the maximum period if convicted. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli, while the accused was not represented. The court did not offer bail and set June 16 for case mention.
