Rodziah pleads against early sacrifice of Ampang seat
Rodziah Ismail won the Ampang parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election, defeating former PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin and eight other candidates. KUALA LUMPUR : Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail hopes to serve out her current term but is prepared to make way for another PKR candidate in the 16th general election (GE16). The former Selangor executive councillor's remarks follow confirmation that investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz has joined PKR's Ampang division. He quit Umno on May 30. Rodziah, the PKR welfare bureau chief, said the development had fuelled speculation of 'certain agendas', including questions about the Ampang parliamentary seat and the two state seats under it. Ampang PKR chief Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad holds the Lembah Jaya state seat while Selangor deputy speaker Kamri Kamaruddin has the Bukit Antarabangsa seat. 'Whatever the decision may be, let's wait until the end of the current term. Don't turn Ampang into a sacrificial seat. 'If the sole purpose is to create space and pave the way early by asking any MP or assemblyman to step aside, I think that is unreasonable,' said Rodziah, who won the Ampang seat in the 2022 general election (GE15). She won with a 29,681-vote majority, defeating former PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin and eight other candidates. Rodziah was moved from the Batu Tiga state seat in the Shah Alam parliamentary constituency to reclaim Ampang from Zuraida, who won it under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner before joining Bersatu and later Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM). In February, FMT quoted sources as saying that Tengku Zafrul was expected to contest a Selangor seat in the next general election, with Ampang being his top choice, and Petaling Jaya and Pandan as other possibilities. Speaking to FMT in an interview at Parliament, Rodziah said she would abide by the party's decision on GE16 candidates, for both state and parliamentary seats. 'If my services are needed, I will continue. If the decision is otherwise, I will accept it because over the past few years, I have seen where my path may lead,' said Rodziah, who lost the contest for the PKR women's chief in May. Last week, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh confirmed that Tengku Zafrul's application to join PKR's Ampang division had been approved by the party's central leadership council at its July 26 meeting. The senator had resigned as an Umno Supreme Council member and Kota Raja division chief. Tengku Zafrul, who joined Umno in 1997, was seen as a technocrat when appointed as finance minister in Muhyiddin Yassin's Cabinet in March 2020, a role he retained in Ismail Sabri Yaakob's administration. His Umno membership only became publicly known ahead of GE15 when he was named Barisan Nasional's candidate for Kuala Selangor, a seat he failed to win. In April 2024, Tengku Zafrul quit as Selangor Umno treasurer, citing a lack of serious effort to revive the party in the state after its poor showing in the state polls, fuelling speculation – first emerging in December – that he was leaving Umno.

Can Madani deliver one million affordable homes?
COMMENT | One million affordable homes in 10 years (2026 - 2035), as promised by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in Parliament. Can this be achieved? It's a recycling of the promise by former housing and local government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin (then from PKR) to build one million cheaper homes in 10 years (2019-2028). That pledge was interrupted by the Sheraton Move. What about Anwar's promise? I sincerely hope that it comes true this time. But right off the bat, there are conflicting statistics.

Federal Court grants PKR leave to appeal in Zuraida's bond payment case
PKR has been given leave to appeal a Court of Appeal ruling reducing Zuraida Kamaruddin's liability under a bond entered with the party from RM10 million to RM100,000. PUTRAJAYA : The Federal Court has granted PKR leave to appeal a decision handed down by the Court of Appeal reducing former vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin's liability to the party under a bond from RM10 million to RM100,000. A three-member bench led by Justice Nallini Pathmanathan delivered the decision in an online proceeding after hearing submissions from the lawyers of both parties. Also on the panel hearing the leave application were Justices Nordin Hassan and Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera. The Federal Court agreed to consider one of five legal questions put forward by PKR to secure the right to appeal. It will examine whether a court can override a factual admission that a certain sum of money represents the value which one party has received from another under a contract, to determine what constitutes reasonable compensation in the circumstances of the case. The appeal will be heard on a date to be fixed. PKR was represented by Ranjit Singh, while Azhar Azizan Harun appeared for Zuraida. In 2020, PKR sued Zuraida, claiming that she had breached a contractual bond by joining Bersatu following the Sheraton Move in February that year. The terms of the bond required Zuraida to pay PKR RM10 million within seven days if she resigned from the party to join another political party or became an independent candidate. In her defence, Zuraida claimed that the bond violated her constitutional right to freedom of association. On June 23, 2023, the High Court found her liable and ordered that she pay PKR RM10 million as stipulated in the bond instrument. On Dec 11 last year, a three-member Court of Appeal bench led by Justice See Mee Chun affirmed her liability for breaching the bond, but reduced the quantum of compensation to RM100,000, giving rise to the present application to the apex court.

Federal Court grants PKR leave to appeal in Zuraida's bond payment reduction case
PUTRAJAYA — The Federal Court here today granted Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leave to appeal against the appellate court's decision to reduce the bond payment owed by its former vice-president Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin (picture) from RM10 million to RM100,000 in a party bond breach case. The leave application was allowed by the Federal Court's three-panel judges comprising Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan, Datuk Nordin Hassan and Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, which is a prerequisite for matters proceeding to the Federal Court. The appeal will centre on a single question of law, which was amended by the bench during today's hearing. The question allowed to be argued in the substantive appeal is whether a party (A) to a financial bond, agrees to pay a certain sum of money as liquidated damages to (B) upon the happening of a certain event and; admits in a recital to such financial bond, that, the sum of money represented the value that (A) had received from (B), can have the court override such admission of fact and proceed to decide whether that sum constitutes reasonable compensation, taking into account the peculiar nature of the relationship between the parties. On Dec 11 last year, the appellate court three-man bench led by Judge Datuk See Mee Chun upheld the High Court's ruling that Zuraida had breached the bond but reduced the quantum payment from RM10 million to RM100,000. Previously, in Jun 23, 2023, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled in favour of PKR and ordered Zuraida, who is the former Ampang Member of Parliament, to pay RM10 million in accordance with the bond's terms. The presiding judge, Datuk Akhtar Tahir, held that the bond was a valid and binding contract. The lawsuit was initiated in 2020, by PKR's secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, on behalf of the party, claiming Zuraida had violated the terms of a bond she signed before contesting in the 14th General Election in 2018. Under the bond, among others, Zuraida was required to pay PKR RM10 million to the party within seven days if she resigned from PKR, joined another political party, or became an independent representative after being elected on the party's ticket. In her defence, Zuraida contended that she was forced to sign the bond with the party to be able to stand for election as a candidate in the general election under the PKR banner. In today's proceeding, PKR was represented by lawyers Ranjit Singh, William Leong, Navpreet Singh, Sakina Siraj, Chew Chun Man and Liew Hong Wei, while Zuraida was represented by counsels Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, Nurul Najwa Zainuddin and Muhammad Firdaus Shaik Alauddin. — BERNAMA
