Review – Birds of Prey #24: Inner Demons
Birds of Prey #24 cover, via DC Comics.
Ray: It's the conclusion of the most action-packed arc of Birds of Prey yet, as the entire team has been called back together to face a massive threat. A consortium of villains has stolen key technology around the world, and the mysterious Inque has captured Big Barda and is using her like a symbiote. A New God is deadly even when they're holding back – and Barda without her usual moral scruples is definitely not holding back. One wrong swing from the mind-controlled Barda could easily kill one of her best friends, so it's a split-second game of Constantine casting spells and Canary using her sonic scream to peel back Inque's shield just enough to cut her off. And once she's off – all hell breaks loose, because Barda is enraged and determined that she'll never be used as a weapon again. There's just one problem – she's not the only member of the team who can be used as a weapon, and the other might be even more dangerous. Possessed. Via DC Comics.
Whenever Megeara is out of control, the tone of this series tends to shift more directly into horror – so this is a nice way to up the scales in a hurry as Daemon makes his final gambit to get away alive. The final battle is incredibly tense, and the story ends on a bittersweet note. The Birds are back together, but the villains got away with their first goal and are still in the wind. That makes it a little funny when the Birds all hang out together at their favorite Ramen shop after, but the levity is very welcome. Cass and Barda continue to be the best comedy team in DC at the moment, and it's a fun, light scene – until a reveal on the very last page that sets up some fascinating stuff going forward as a very unexpected character may be trying to form an alliance. This series has been going on for two years already, and it's pretty consistently one of DC's best team books.
