Carlisle Southern Gateway Project work 'taking shape' according to council
Works happening along English Street for the Carlisle Southern Gateway project are 'taking shape' according to Cumberland Council. The binder course, which forms the essential foundation for the final road surface, has now been laid along the full length of the street and final resurfacing is set for June with the road set to reopen to traffic by the end of the June. Pedestrian access remains open, with a clear walking route from the station to the taxi rank via the former B&M site. Meanwhile, the new buff-coloured cycle lane is under construction which the council said is a 'big step toward safe and accessible active travel' in the city. Boat Bike Tours grows through acquisition and opens U.S. office
European cruise-and-cycle tour operator Boat Bike Tours has merged with another operator and opened a sales office in Fairfield, Connecticut. The company said it opened the U.S. office due to a growing demand for active travel in North America. With the merger with Croatia-based Islandhopping, Amsterdam-based Boat Bike Tours has more than 70 itineraries across 15 countries. "When it comes to what we do, our name says it all -- we blend the comfort of cruising aboard small ships with adventures by bike," said CEO Laurens Winkel. "With Boat Bike Tours, trips are inland on rivers and canals, while Islandhopping is on saltwater." Boat Bike Tours has a fleet of 50 ships, including barges, motor yachts and sailing ships. Biking styles range from guided tours for casual cyclists and independent tours for avid bikers. The tour operator began more than 40 years ago as Channel Cruises Holland. Itineraries range from five to 15 days. The company said its travel style gives passengers a chance to spend more time in a destination, allowing them to more deeply connect with a city. The tours go beyond major cities and visit smaller towns and villages. The company said popular itineraries for its North American clients include a cruise and bike tour from Amsterdam to Bruges; island hopping from Split to Dubrovnik; and an itinerary that takes travelers from Cochem to Metz on the Moselle River.

Child road safety 'could be boosted by a Cumbria mayor'
Devolution for Cumbria, along with a mayor, could help children walk and cycle more safely, a former transport minister has Harrison, who now chairs the Bikeability Trust, said a new mayoral authority could employ an "active travel commissioner" to invest in walking and cycling Watson, headteacher of a primary school near Cockermouth which lies on a busy crossroads with a 60mph speed limit, said speeding motorists had "demolished" the perimeter wall three times in the thirteen years she had worked a pupil, said: "I would love to cycle into school, but the road doesn't feel safe." Mrs Harrison was speaking on a visit to the school, Eaglesfield Paddle CE Primary child there, Oskar, said some of the local roads were "really fast" with "a lot of blind corners".Cumbria has joined the government's priority devolution programme and is expected to have a mayor next year. Mrs Watson said staff did not encourage children to walk or cycle to school because the main road was "just not safe".An active travel commissioner could help provide more walkways and cycleways, she Harrison, who was the Conservative MP for Copeland until last year, said: "I think having that person whose sole job it is to enable more people to walk and cycle, especially children, will be so important."A final decision over whether Cumbria goes ahead with devolution will be made by local councils later this year, with a mayoral election expected next year.
