Jane Austen Fans Share Her 9 Best TV And Movie Adaptations Of All Time
This year marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth, which might explain the deluge of Austen shows hitting the stage and screen this year. As well as the BBC's (fantastic) freshly-released Jane Austen: The Rise Of A Genius, there's Audible's star-studded adaptation of Pride & Prejudice (set to come out in summer), Dolly Alderton's upcoming version of the same title, and a brand-new stage adaptation of Emma, to name a few. All this ought to be good news to Austen lovers. But let's be real: not all adaptations are created equal, as members of Reddit's dedicated r/janeausten forum know. Writing to the fanbase, site user u/Jorvikstories asked readers to list their favourite film and TV adaptations of Austen's books. Here are the most popular responses: 'It is the standard by which all Jane Austen adaptations should be judged.' Credit: u/Disastrous-Bee-1557 'I'm sure I'm not the only person who learned to love the novel by watching this adaptation. 'It's also the only adaptation of Emma I've seen that does the Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax storyline justice.' Credit: u/Asleep_Lack 'Perfectly cast, fairly faithful.' Credit: u/RoseIsBadWolf 'It's delightful and I feel touches all the right notes for an adaptation of Austen's earliest novel,' u/MrsApostate agreed. 'Again, the 1995 version is the gold standard. Directed by Ang Lee and written by Emma Thompson, it is just gorgeous and a must-watch. 'I also really loved the 2008 mini-series of Sense And Sensibility [on the BBC], though it is less well-known and loved. Dan Stevens in the role of Edward Ferrars is a little bonus in that one, though.' Credit:u/MrsApostate 'It's as good an adaptation of Lady Susan as we're going to get. I don't really think it's necessary to read Lady Susan before watching it. 'Yes, they change things a little bit... but it would probably be fine to try without knowing the text.' Credit:u/CapStar300 'Basically, 1995 was a very good year for Austen fans,' wroteu/salymander_1. 'This set the standard for film length [book] adaptations, where cuts must inevitably be made,' u/ditchdiggergirl agreed. Reddit user u/MrsApostate said: 'There's a 2007 adaptation of Mansfield Park that is passable, with Billie Piper in the role of Fanny. However, I actually prefer the 1999 version in which Fanny is a bit more like Austen herself. 'It's more tongue-in-cheek and not as interested in being true to the book as it is in exploring the characters and leaning into the sarcasm and wit that are real Austen trademarks. I'll likely get harshly downvoted for liking it, but I do.' 'I really like that movie,' u/treowlufu agreed. 'It is not the most faithful, because it leans much more into the idea of Austen as romance than into the grittiness of the novel. I'm sure, too, that the director and producers also worried that a novel-true Fanny wouldn't play well to audiences. 'But I think that despite this caveat, it's a faithful depiction of almost every other character and one of the best for showcasing Austen's wit.' 'It's just a modern-day Pride And Prejudice.' Credit: u/Gerry1of1 Writer's note: Helen Fielding, author of the Bridget Jones books, has explicitly said she nicked the plot from Austen's 'well market-researched' novel. 'I haven't seen Clueless mentioned yet, and I feel like that's a pretty good modern adaptation of Emma.' Credit: u/TheDustOfMen Do you have anything to add? Let us know! Tom Felton to reprise role as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and The Cursed Child
Tom Felton is reprising his role as Draco Malfoy for the Harry Potter And The Cursed Child play. The Surrey-born actor, who starred in all the film adaptations of JK Rowling's fantasy novel until the last movie in 2011, will make a comeback as Harry Potter's school bully on Broadway at the Lyric Theatre in New York later this year. The production said he was the 'first actor from the films to reprise' their role on stage, and this will be Felton's Broadway debut. PA Media Tom Felton on stage at the Lyric Theatre in New York City. (Emilio Madrid/Harry Potter And The Cursed Child) He said: 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honours of my life. 'Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. 'It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and of course his iconic platinum blond hair – and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. 'I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.' PA Media Tom Felton arriving for the world premiere of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. Felton, 37, made his West End debut in the supernatural thriller 2:22 – A Ghost Story in 2022. He will begin his run in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child on November 11 for a limited 19 weeks, the production said on Thursday. Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said: 'It's not lost on us that this is a cultural moment charged with nostalgia, evolution, and emotion. 'Tom's return to Hogwarts bridges generations of fans and breathes new life into a beloved story. We're beyond thrilled to welcome Tom back 'home' but also into a new family: our Broadway company. 'We can't wait to see him inhabit this role once again with the same depth, gravity, and humanity he has always brought to Draco.' PA Media Tom Felton starred in the original Harry Potter movie series alongside Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. The play, written by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne, began in 2016 in London and has had a Broadway run since 2018. It was co-devised by Rowling, and is set 19 years after the events of the seventh and final book, with Ministry of Magic employee Harry and his wife Ginny Weasley waving off their youngest son Albus Severus to school. The two-part play, which stretches over five hours, sees Albus struggle at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with the weight of his family legacy and go to extreme and dangerous lengths to right the wrongs of the past. Since the ending of the film franchise, Felton has been in 2011's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and had recurring roles in the TV series Murder In The First, The Flash and Origin. He has also used his voice in the Harry Potter video games, based on the movie, and featured in the special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, who played Harry, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The seven Harry Potter books are set to be brought to the small screen by HBO, with production beginning at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in summer 2025. The young stars have been cast with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron, while the new Draco has not yet been confirmed. Earlier this year, British actor Paapa Essiedu and US star John Lithgow were confirmed as the cruel Professor Severus Snape and Hogwarts headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore, respectively. Also joining is Welsh comedian and actor Paul Whitehouse as the magic-less Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch, and Hot Fuzz actor Nick Frost as the friendly groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid. Ryan Gosling Could Be White Black Panther in MCU After Ketema Reveal
The controversial meme depicting Ryan Gosling as has resurfaced following the reveal of Ketema, a white young man, as a version of the Protector of Wakanda in Marvel Comics. Notably, Black Panther, both in comics and in various adaptations, has been depicted as a Black person of African origin. This includes the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which Black Panther has been portrayed by Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright. Ketema unmasked himself in Marvel Knights: The World To Come #1 (2025), disclosing that he was a white young man. This prompted the above-mentioned meme to return in circulation, and fans to wonder whether Ryan Gosling's casting as Black Panther might even become real in the future. However, this seems unlikely. Guys the meme is real now…. Marvel Comics Introduces T'Challa's White Son Ketema As Future Black Panther And King Of Wakanda byu/Solid-Move-1411 inAvengers The first issue of Christopher Priest and Joe Quesada's new Marvel Knights: The World To Come miniseries sets up the stage for the narrative. T'Challa is dead, and the story goes back and forth across time to depict its impact. In one scene, taking place several years before the primary setting, an older T'Challa takes on Ketema, a man in a Black Panther costume, in a tribal challenge. It soon becomes apparent through the interaction between the characters that Ketema is T'Challa's son, and there is a lot of antagonistic sentiment between them. Eventually, Ketema triumphs over his father and unmasks himself to reveal that he has blonde hair and pale skin. He declares, 'I am king now. Wakanda is mine.' The issue also reveals that T'Challa reconciled with his former fiancée, Monica Lynne, after his marriage to X-Men member Storm / Ororo Munroe fell apart. Lynne became pregnant at some point. However, Lynne, like T'Challa, is Black. So, it's unlikely that Ketema is the child from that pregnancy. Further, it remains unclear whether Ketema is even T'Challa's biological son. As the miniseries continues, fans will likely get more answers on the matter.

📚 Hail to the King, baby 😈
📚 Hail to the King, baby 😈 Chances of a Stephen King book being great? Pretty good! Chances of a Stephen King movie being great? A bit dicier. King's horror prose and other writing has kept Hollywood busy doing adaptations for nearly 50 years, and it's been a mixed bag, honestly. Which is why when we get a movie like "The Monkey," we celebrate. A cursed monkey toy brings about a whole bunch of bloody death in the latest King film, though you might prefer righteous justice doled out by a really ripped dude. Alan Ritchson is back for another season as the hard-hitting, bone-crushing title hero of "Reacher," and we're also excited about the streaming return of dark comedy travelogue "The White Lotus." (Pro tip: Staycations are the best.) Now on to the good stuff: Witness a whole bunch of cartoonish carnage in 'The Monkey' Director Osgood Perkins (son of legendary "Psycho" star Anthony) adapts King's short story for this horror comedy starring Theo James in a dual role as twin brothers who can't escape a cursed monkey toy with drum sticks and a penchant for causing death "Final Destination" style when it gets wound up. There's a lot explored about how we deal with mortality and dying, and it also boasts a litany of enjoyably nasty like a guy getting disemboweled via harpoon and a woman accidentally setting her head on fire before her face meets the sharp business end of a real estate sign. The movie's release is also cause to update my best Stephen King movie rankings, where classics like "The Shining" and "Carrie" make the list alongside recent adaptations such as "It" and "Gerald's Game." See Alan Ritchson punch evil in its fat face with new 'Reacher' Even when the world's kind of in flames, it's nice to see Jack Reacher settling into a new case and saving the day with his brain and his brawn. Based on the Lee Child novels, "Reacher" is now streaming the first trio of episodes from its third season, which finds Alan Ritchson's buff former Army special investigator working undercover for the DEA to find a confidential informant. Reacher also runs right into a 7-foot-2 henchman played by Olivier Richters, and they give each other fits. Offscreen, the pair got along great, though Ritchson told me for a "Reacher" preview that their fights took a physical toll because his new co-star is "a monster," he says. "Your body's getting tossed around into walls and floor and ceiling and it starts to hurt after a while. But I think audiences are going to love this and it really makes for a great season." Stream 'The White Lotus' for all-star travel shenanigans HBO's anthology series "The White Lotus" tackles wealth and people behaving badly with a satirical edge, a fictional luxury hotel chain and an impressive supporting cast. Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey and national treasure Walton Goggins are among the stars of the third season, which takes place at a swank resort in Thailand. While it's not sharp as previous seasons, TV critic Kelly Lawler writes in her ★★★ review that it's still "deliciously twisty" and "pretty anxiety-inducing to watch, even when you've been on this particular vacation two times before." But wait, there's more: Check out more "White Lotus" coverage, including why Patrick Schwarzenegger is the Season 3 breakout, the return of a surprise past character (spoilers ahoy!) and how people are already trying to figure out Season 4. Even more goodness to check out! Got thoughts, questions, ideas, concerns, compliments or maybe even some recs for me?
