Eat all you want for RM7 at this Sg Buloh establishment
Hanie's Café offers RM7-per-plate meals where customers are free to take as many side dishes as they want. SUNGAI BULOH : A plate of rice with as many side dishes as you like for just RM7? It may sound unlikely, but Hanie's Café offers just that – a blessing for those who are struggling in the face of economic challenges. Operating for the past 15 years in Sungai Buloh, this eatery benefits the underprivileged and B40 group, in particular, by adopting the idea of 'take as much as you like' for a fixed price. Proprietor Darish Hanie, 47, said she established the RM7-per-plate concept after the Movement Control Order (MCO) in 2021, during which she herself underwent tough times. 'After the MCO, life was very difficult for us. But I thought, if I was struggling, others might be struggling even more. That's when I was inspired to think of a way to save the business while helping people,' she told FMT. Originally from Gua Musang in Kelantan, Darish expressed that she deeply understands the value of a meal – even a modest one – having grown up in a frugal family and needing to sharing food with her many siblings. Darish Hanie. 'Here, I want everyone to eat until they're full without worrying about the cost. Customers can take as much rice and dishes as they can fit on a plate, with no limit and at no extra charge,' said Darish, who runs the business with her family. Asked about profits, Darish said she constantly monitors the price of raw ingredients and adjusts her dishes based on affordability. For example, if chicken or fish is too expensive, she substitutes them with vegetables or cheaper ingredients. 'God gave me the ability to cook, so I diversify my recipes even when I use the same ingredients, so my customers still have options,' she explained. Darish said the satisfaction she gets from helping the less fortunate encourages her to keep going. 'Once, a customer came with five children and they shared one plate. After eating, they thanked me. I can't help them financially, but I can through my cooking,' she added. Hanie's Café, which also specialises in Thai food, is packed from as early as 11am and continues to receive a steady flow of customers until 2pm – and sometimes, all the way until closing time at 6pm. Customer Yatimin, 41, said the RM7 price is very reasonable, especially for families with low incomes. To curb wastefulness, customers are charged double if they do not finish their food. 'Elsewhere, I'd probably spend RM30 to RM40 just for myself, my wife and two kids. So for us in the B40 group, this really helps,' said the private-hospital employee. Retiree Shaiful Hilmi Sha'ari, 54, said such efforts should be emulated by other vendors, even if not done daily. 'If they can do it once a week or once a month, that alone would be enough as a charitable act,' said the Klang resident. Sheffield Food Works celebrates decade of upcycling surplus food
A social enterprise dedicated to tackling food waste and improving access to affordable and healthy meals is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Food Works Sheffield, previously known as The Real Junk Food Project, offers "upcycled" food through its network of community cafes and markets, with people asked to pay only what they can project, which recently took over the derelict greenhouses in the city's Graves Park, uses surplus food to prepare nutritious ready meals for food banks and chief executive René Meijer said: "We want a food system that isn't just good for the environment and nature-friendly, but also needs to feed everybody." Mr Meijer said the project was born out of an idea to "have a slightly better world". "We came across this project in Leeds that was saving food from being wasted and feeding people with it," he said."We gave that a go and 10 years later, here we are."Mr Meijer said since 2015, the enterprise had evolved beyond being a food waste campaign, and changed its name in 2019."We grow food now, we make ready meals, there is so much more to the organisation and we wanted something that really linked us to Sheffield," he said. There are now 500 volunteers who help run two community cafes in Sharrow and Upperthorpe, a market in Handsworth and grow produce in Graves Park."We are just trying to make a bit of a caring food system," said Mr Meijer."We want to make this a city where everyone can grow, eat and enjoy locally grown food."To mark the milestone, Food Works will launch a commemorative book alongside a crowdfunding appeal to support its publication and future initiatives. 5 overpriced burger chains in the US
Published: | Updated: Once upon a time, grabbing a burger, fries, and a drink was the go-to move for an affordable meal. But in 2025, that quick fix has become a pricey splurge at many chains. While some restaurants are winning back customers with great value (Chili's, you've still got fans), others are being called out for sky-high prices without the quality to match. 1. Five Guys Five Guys has long been praised for its fresh ingredients, but the price tag? Not so much. One disappointed customer recalled, 'Yeah, I used to go back in my undergrad when there was a Five Guys down the street,' they shared on Reddit. They continued: 'The prices were in line with other fast food at the time, at least from what I remember. But I went to one around a year or so ago and now I'm looking at the menu and seeing $12 for only cheeseburger… It's not a meal without a drink, burger, and fries. That's $11.39 cheeseburger, $5.49 "little" fries, and a soda is $2.89. $20 is absolutely ridiculous. You can literally go to any sit down restaurant and get a burger meal for that price.' 2. McDonald's The Golden Arches have always promised fast and cheap eats, but customers aren't buying it anymore. One diner shared their frustration: 'I went to a drive-thru to order a McChicken and medium fries. They charged me $8.35, but I drove out of the line before I reached the window.' 3. Burger King They continued: 'Later that evening I ordered the Sirloin Steak burger to-go from the most legendary historic steakhouse in my city for the same amount.' 4. Shake Shack Once celebrated for its gourmet take on fast food, Shake Shack is facing backlash over price hikes. One insider even admitted: 'Us employees believe the same. The price IS more expensive, but instead of doing fair prices, Shake Shack corporate does deals now, especially through the Shack App and delivery apps.' They added: 'I cannot tell you how much we have been overwhelmed and the quality of our food has gone way rock bottom. We are not the same company that the Meyers built. That being said, I would probably never eat at Shake Shack besides when I work and get a discount. Our meals are not paid for but are 60% off, so it ends up costing around 6-8 depending what you get.' 5. Jack in the Box Jack in the Box customers have also taken to social media to vent about the steep prices. 'Went to get a Buttery Jack today… $18.92 for the combo.. just the combo. They got my drink and fries wrong… Asked for a refund before they even handed me the bag,' one user shared. Another wrote: 'I used to be able to get a good deal on the "App only" section or their coupons because there was variety. Now they just force you to spend $10+ in order to get something. Thought about trying that chicken Sambo but for $8 it was a hard pass. And the food doesn't taste as good as before so sometimes I will use the coupon to get my kids 2 Oreo shakes but that is like once a month.' Want more stories like this from the Daily Mail?
