Wightlink criticised over dynamic pricing policy
A cross-Solent ferry operator's "exorbitant dynamic pricing" has been criticised for its effect on residents and businesses on the Isle of Parish Council (FPC) passed a motion requesting an update from Wightlink on the steps it was taking to end the pricing strategy and make the Yarmouth-Lymington crossing "more affordable".Dynamic pricing involves quickly and often adjusting prices in response to said it would be "more than happy" to meet council members to discuss feedback from local residents. Parish councillors also agreed to write to Wightlink to raise concerns about the "lack of advertising" of its public motion by Warren Whyte said the pricing policy was "hurting residents and impacting our local businesses"He said it was affecting "particularly tourism and those needing specialist materials or labour from the mainland".A Wightlink spokesperson said: "We haven't yet received any communication from FPC but we are more than happy to meet with them to discuss feedback from local residents."We welcome engagement with the community and already work closely with many individuals, groups and organisations ... and have made changes as a direct result of their feedback." 'Lifeline ferry services' Solent Transport User Group (Stug), a campaigning organisation that advocates for improved cross-Solent ferry services, said FPC has its "full support"."It is vital that Wightlink engage fully with the community they are serving to understand the challenges caused by their dislocation from the mainland."Stug has consistently opposed the practice of dynamic pricing on all our lifeline ferry services and has led the way in campaigning against it," it quoted the so-called Islanders' Charter, signed by the leader of Isle of Wight Council and both island MPs in 2024, which said that dynamic pricing should be "independently evaluated to determine whether there are discriminatory practices against Island residents and businesses". Startup unveils ambitious plan for European sleeper trains
Berlin -based startup Nox plans to launch a network of overnight trains connecting more than 100 European cities by 2035, starting operations in 2027. Nox says it aims to provide an affordable alternative to short-haul flights with private rooms on sleeper trains. Fares will cost from €79 for a single room and €149 for a double room. The proposed routes include connections to major cities such as Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Warsaw, and Budapest. Nox says passengers will board in the evening, sleep in private rooms with 2m long beds, separate seats, and window views, and arrive rested in the morning.

Uber bets on affordability with shared fixed-route rides, expanded passes
May 14 (Reuters) - Uber Technologies (UBER.N), opens new tab on Wednesday unveiled a range of new offerings such as shared fixed-route rides and expanded membership passes, targeting consumers seeking cost-effective ways to travel. The ride-sharing app has been looking to invest in more affordable transport and delivery offerings to widen its user base and combat slowing revenue growth in an uncertain economic environment. Uber's new "Route Share" ride option will cost half as much as the company's UberX ride-hail service, by providing pickups every 20 minutes along busy commute corridors. Initially available in cities such as New York, San Francisco and Chicago, Route Share will operate during weekday rush hours and Uber is considering partnering with employers to integrate pre-tax commuter benefits. The company is also expanding ride passes that help users lock-in lower fares and keep costs predictable. These ride passes will be available in major U.S. cities such as Chicago, Dallas, and San Francisco, and will be expanded to teen accounts later this year. Uber unveiled Price Lock Pass for $2.99 in February and it was initially available in a few U.S. markets. The feature will now be available across several cities in the United States and expand throughout the country and Brazil this year, the company said. The company had announced a partnership with Volkswagen ( opens new tab to deploy a fleet of thousands of the German automaker's fully electric ID. Buzz AD vehicles as robotaxis next year.
