What is a famine and who declares one?
For months, U.N. officials, aid groups and experts have warned that Palestinians in Gaza are on the brink of famine . Earlier this month, Israel eased a weekslong blockade on the territory as a result of international criticism, but the U.N. humanitarian aid office said Friday that deliveries into Gaza remain severely restricted, describing the current flow of food as a trickle into an area facing catastrophic levels of hunger.

Thousands rush to receive aid at southern Gaza distribution centre
The first US-backed distribution centre opened in Rafah after a blockade of nearly three months on humanitarian aid entering Gaza imposed by Israel. The scheme was quickly overwhelmed as thousands of people tried to get their hands on food parcels. Israel said the newly built distribution centre would prevent Hamas from stealing aid from Palestinians; however, aid groups and the UN have said the scheme violates humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence

Live updates: Aid groups collect some supplies that have entered Gaza
Aid groups have collected humanitarian aid carried by about 90 trucks, out of a total of nearly 200 that have entered Gaza since Israel began allowing limited goods in earlier this week, the United Nations said Thursday. Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the U.N. Humanitarian agency OCHA, said the trucks that entered carried medicine, wheat flour and nutrition supplies. Aid groups faced significant challenges distributing the aid because of insecurity, the risk of looting and coordination issues with Israeli authorities, Laerke added.
