Israel launches strikes on weapons in Syria
Israel said it had launched strikes on weapons belonging to Syria, hours after reports that two projectiles had been fired from Syria into Israel on Tuesday. The Israeli strikes on southern Syria caused "significant human and material losses", Syria's foreign ministry said, adding that Israel was "trying to destabilise the region". Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said he held Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa responsible for the projectiles launched into Israel. Despite recent indirect talks to ease tensions between the two countries, Israel has stepped up attacks on targets in Syria since Sharaa led a rebel offensive that overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024. "Violent explosions shook southern Syria, notably the town of Quneitra and the Daraa region, following Israeli aerial strikes," said the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group. In a statement, Syria's foreign ministry said: "This escalation constitutes a blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and aggravates tensions in the region. "Syria has never been and will never be a threat to anyone in the region." It was unclear how many people were killed or injured in Israel's strikes. Israel said the strikes came after two projectiles launched from Syria landed in open areas of the country, causing no injuries. Israeli media reported that the strikes were the first launched from Syria since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. It was not immediately clear who fired the projectiles. "We consider the president of Syria directly responsible for any threat and fire toward the State of Israel," Katz said. Syria's foreign ministry said reports of the launches from inside Syria "have not been verified yet". When the Assad regime was deposed, Israel launched a wave of attacks to degrade Syrian military infrastructure. It has also encouraged the expansion of settlements in the occupied Golan Heights, territory which Israel seized from Syria in 1976 and is considered illegally occupied under international law. Last month, US President Donald Trump announced plans to lift decade-old sanctions on Syria, imposed in response to atrocities committed by forces loyal to Assad during a 13-year civil war. During that conflict, more than 600,000 people were killed and 12 million others were forced from their homes. Last month, Israel bombed an area near Syria's presidential palace in Damascus, a strike which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said was a "clear message" that it would "not allow the deployment of forces south of Damascus". UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the bombing was a "violation of Syria's sovereignty".

Woman pleads guilty to aggravated robbery at Urbana car dealership

(WCIA) — Nearly two years after the crime occurred, a woman has pleaded guilty for her role in an armed robbery at an Urbana dealership in 2023. On June 7, 2023, a Crispin Auto employee was robbed at gunpoint and a car was stolen. The next day multiple people were arrested in a McLean County town. Police officials said the car they were driving in was stolen from an Urbana dealership. Michaella Campbell pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery on Monday. She was ordered to serve 48 months of probation, 180 days in the Champaign County Correctional Center (with credit for 145 days previously served) and 100 hours of public service work. If Cook County approves, the probation will be served in their jurisdiction. WCIA previously reported that surveillance video obtained after the aggravated robbery shows the incident started with a test drive involving an employee and two White women. When the three returned to Crispin Auto, two Black men were recorded on surveillance footage running up to the car as the employee was getting out. One pointed a gun to the back of the employee's head and shoved her out of the way. Seconds later, the same employee was pepper sprayed by one of the women before she got in the car with the other suspects and drove away. Third defendant in U of I pro-Palestine protest pleads guilty to misdemeanor Three other people were arrested alongside Campbell, according to the Urbana Police Department. This included Michael Roberts, Deandre Young and an unnamed female juvenile. Roberts and Young previously pleaded guilty, in June and December of 2024 respectively, to aggravated robbery. They each received 48 months of probation, and a 180-day jail sentence. Roberts received 366 days credited for time served, while Young received 545 days credited for time served. Labor Announces New ‘Office for Multicultural Affairs'
In response to an increase in anti-Semitic and anti-Palestine incidents, the Albanese government will set up a new Office for Multicultural Affairs within the Home Affairs Department. Multicultural Minister Anne Aly and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke jointly announced the initiative on June 3, calling multiculturalism 'a fundamental aspect of our identity.' The office will oversee services such as settlement support, migrant English programs, and interpreting services, while also revamping grant programs to better reflect modern multicultural needs. Modern Australia is a Multicultural Australia: Minister Burke and Aly said the new office would consolidate key responsibilities within Home Affairs, to allow for a more cohesive national strategy to deal with social cohesion. 'The new Office will drive a national approach to a multicultural Australia, providing leadership across the three tiers of government,' they said in a joint statement. 'Modern Australia and multicultural Australia are the same thing,' Burke declared, highlighting the importance of embedding multicultural values across the Australian Public Service. The Epoch Times has contacted the Home Affairs Department on further details regarding how the body will operate alongside the existing multicultural minister's office. The announcement also comes amid Labor's pre-election pledge to invest $25 million in more than 600 community language schools across Australia, supporting over 90,000 students studying 84 languages. As part of the same pledge, $5 million was earmarked for a specialised Asian languages stream to help students—regardless of background—learn Asian languages through to Year 12. The move comes amid an ongoing spate of major anti-Semitic issues stemming from the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel.
