Wildfire near Harrison Lake prompts campsite evacuation

Smoke from the Bear Creek fire is seen behind boats in Harrison Lake in this photo provided by the BC Wildfire Service. An out-of-control wildfire burning near Harrison Lake in B.C.'s Fraser Valley prompted a precautionary evacuation of campsites in the area, according to officials. The Bear Creek fire broke out early Tuesday evening and 'campers in the vicinity were asked to leave the area,' the BC Wildfire Service's online dashboard said. A person identifying themselves as the host of the Bear Creek Recreation site also posted on social media to note the evacuation. Crew fought the fire overnight using night-vision technology, pouring buckets of water on the blaze to try to minimize its spread. Related: Full coverage of B.C.'s 2025 wildfire season By Wednesday morning, its size was estimated at 65 hectares and it had been classified as the province's only wildfire 'of note' because it was 'creating an increased level of interest,' the BCWS' website said. Two 22-person crews have been assigned, and the ground efforts are being supported by one helicopter and three air tankers. 'The public is asked to stay out of the Harrison Lake area for their own safety and responder safety. When firefighting aircraft are working on an active wildfire and picking up water from nearby lakes, they need plenty of room to maneuver to do their job safely,' the BCWS said. 'We urge the public to use common sense and keep their boats well away from areas where air tankers or helicopters operate.' The fire is suspected to be human caused, according to the BCWS.
