Pushing the best players to keep going regardless of age is helping AFL teams boost premiership chances

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin lauded superstar skipper Max Gawn as a 'master of his craft' and, as one of the AFL's best players at age 33, said the shift was on towards helping the aged elite play for as long as possible. As 36-year-old Brisbane Lions gun Dayne Zorko prepares to rack up a 50th consecutive match against Essendon at the Gabba on Thursday night, Collingwood recalled 37-year-old Scott Pendlebury and 34-year-old Steele Sidebottom for a blockbuster Friday clash with Hawthorn. The importance of all three veteran stars to their premiership-contending teams cannot be understated and the remarkable form of ruckman Gawn has helped propel the Demons to six straight wins and put them back in finals contention. As a raft of older players were taken by clubs in Wednesday night's mid-season rookie draft, Goodwin said the old adage that players would be on the decline after they turned 30 was no longer relevant. He pointed to 33-year-old Jake Melksham as another veteran Demon who was getting better 'the older he gets' and said the reliability of older players was becoming more than just an asset but a weapon. 'I think you have already seen that shift taking place. Clearly, players are playing for a little bit longer,' Goodwin said. 'Back in the day when you got to 30 you were starting to think about the end of your career and clubs were similar in terms of how they looked at players. 'Right now it comes down to an individualised thing and you are seeing right across the competition … a whole range of different guys who are mid 30 and playing exceptional footy and clubs are taking note of that. 'Jake Melksham for us, he seems to be getting better the old he gets and that experience, you just can't buy.' Gawn is on track for what would an eighth all-Australian blazer. At the MCG last Sunday, he destroyed former protege Brody Grundy in a huge Demons win over Sydney and Goodwin couldn't sing his captain's praises any higher. 'What you are seeing is someone who is the master of his craft,' he said. 'He has worked for 13 years on being a great ruckman and has really focused on what that looks like, both from a ruck perspective but also from an aerial perspective. What we are seeing is a guy who is incredibly professional. 'He looks after himself incredibly well and is playing to a really high level.'

Australian Rocket Launch Thwarted by Premature Payload Ejection

Sometimes you try to get to outer space — but then the top of your rocket falls off. It happens. No, really: on Thursday, Australian startup Gilmour Space was forced to call off the maiden launch of its Eris rocket when, just hours before it was supposed to lift off, the nose cone that protects its payload unexpectedly deployed and toppled to the ground, Ars Technica reports. (There aren't photos of the disastrous scene, unfortunately.) "During final launch preparations last night, an electrical fault triggered the system that opens the rocket's nose cone," Gilmour posted on LinkedIn, as quoted by Ars. "This happened before any fuel was loaded into the vehicle. Most importantly, no one was injured, and early checks show no damage to the rocket or the launch pad." Standing around 82 feet tall, Eris is a modestly sized, three-stage rocket designed to carry small satellites to space, with a maximum payload capacity of around 1,100 pounds. It was set to lift off from a private spaceport in Queensland early Friday morning, local time. It was a highly unfortunate setback for the startup. Had the launch been successful, the feat would've marked the first all-Australian rocket to ever reach orbit. A rocket's nose cone, specifically a payload fairing, is designed to protect the top of the vehicle where its payload is stored as it barrels through the Earth's atmosphere. Once the rocket reaches space, the fairing, if it follows a conventional clamshell design, splits into two halves before getting jettisoned. Payload fairing failures aren't very common, and when they happen, it's usually because the nose cones don't separate properly. One of the most infamous examples occurred during NASA's Gemini 9 mission in 1966, when astronauts were attempting to dock the spacecraft with a practice target. As it approached, one half of the clamshell fairing got stuck partially open, resembling, as one astronaut remarked, the gaping maw of an "Angry Alligator." For a nose cone to screw-up because it was deployed before even leaving the launchpad is pretty bizarre. Thankfully, Gilmour told Ars in a statement that it has a replacement ready at its factory in Gold Coast. But it's waiting for a "full investigation" into the incident to conclude before sending it over and installing it on the rocket, which appears to be undamaged. "While we're disappointed by the delay, our team is already working on a solution and we expect to be back at the pad soon," Gilmour told Ars. No official timeline has been given on how long that will take. More on spaceflight: NASA Spacecraft Runs Into Thruster Trouble En Route to Zillion-Dollar Asteroid

Jack Robinson dumped out of Gold Coast Pro a week after Bells breakthrough

Australian surfer Jack Robinson has sensationally bombed out of the Gold Coast Pro in the elimination round, Robinson finished third in his first-round heat on Saturday, thrusting him into the dreaded elimination round on Sunday. Up against fellow Australians Morgan Cibilic and Julian Wilson, Robinson could only muster a two-wave total of 7.06. Wildcard Wilson won the heat with a two-wave total of 15.27, with Cibilic (13.33) also doing enough to progress. Wilson's massive air-reverse to post an 8.17 was the highlight of the all-Australian battle. "I feel like in that heat I was coming up against two of the in-form surfers from Bells," Wilson said. "I'm loving it, to be honest. It felt nice to land three from three then and throw in some variation with a grab. "I was pretty amped up after that. It's nice to be here again and feel at home in this very uncomfortable environment." In the second elimination men's heat of the day, Connor O'Leary and Barron Mamiya progressed at the expense of Australian Jordan Lawler. American Griffin Colapinto also did enough to reach the third round. Barron Mamiya also progressed from the second round. In the other women's eliminator, Sawyer Lindblad and Luana Silva got through ahead of Nadia Erostarbe. When action resumes, the women's third round will feature some heavyweight match-ups. And in an all-Australian showdown, Tyler Wright takes on Sally Fitzgibbons. Stephanie Gilmore will return to action when surfing resumes next week.
