Driverless tractors to handle luggage at Al Maktoum International Airport

If you're flying from Dubai's second airport soon, then your luggage may well be transported without a driver in the front seat. And that's because a new fleet of autonomous vehicles has been introduced by dnata at Al Maktoum International Airport. dnata now operates six electric tractors at Al Maktoum International Airport, which will eventually become the world's largest capacity airport, allowing baggage to be transported. The EZTow model tractors can move up to four baggage containers between the airport terminal and the aircraft at speeds of up to 15km/h, following pre-defined routes. Traditionally, of course, this work has been carried out by human drivers operating under tight time constraints. With the introduction of driverless baggage vehicles, staff who previously drove baggage tractors can now be reassigned to more complex value-added tasks. The Dhs6 million project begins with level three autonomy, which involves minimal human oversight. By 2026, these tractors will upgrade to level four autonomy, which means that they'll have full self-driving capabilities in controlled environments. Insights gained from this rollout will have an impact on how automation will be built into the core of future airport operations at Al Maktoum International Airport. The parties have been working together to create a new regulatory framework for autonomous vehicle operations in airside environments, which remain largely undefined at a global level. Jaffar Dawood, Divisional Senior Vice President for UAE Airport Operations at dnata, said that the rollout could be significant for future operations. He said: 'While autonomous vehicles have largely been limited to trials, this deployment brings the technology into regular, day-to-day operations. 'As global travel continues to rebound and operational demands increase, automation could be key to building smarter, safer and more resilient infrastructure.' Making summer plans? Heavy rain to drench South Korea before heat returns next week

As the dry air meets the newly arriving humid air from the south, narrow, elongated rain clouds are expected to form. After the southern parts of South Korea were hit with heavy rain throughout July 14, intense showers are forecast to drench most of South Korea from the afternoon of July 16 until July 19, said the Korea Meteorological Administration on July 15. According to the KMA, heavy downpours are expected across southern parts of Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces as well as North Jeolla Province as the cool, dry air from the northwest clashes with hot and humid air flowing into the Korean peninsula along the edge of the North Pacific high-pressure system. As the dry air meets the newly arriving humid air from the south, narrow, elongated rain clouds are expected to form. Regions under this rainband, such as the western parts of Korea's central region, may experience rainfall ranging between 30 and 50mm per hour. Between July 16 and 17, the southern parts of Gyeonggi Province, as well as the inland and mountainous regions in southern Gangwon Province, can expect to see collective rainfall ranging between 50mm and 100mm, with heavily hit regions seeing more than 150mm. Other parts of the Greater Seoul region, excluding the southern parts of Gyeonggi Province, as well as inland and mountainous regions of the central and northern parts of Gangwon Province, may see collective rainfall ranging between 30mm to 80mm. On July 17, southern parts of the country as well as Jeju Island will also see rain showers as warm, humid air masses originating from tropical regions flow into Korea along the edge of the high-pressure system situated above the peninsula. Temperatures are expected to feel higher than actual temperatures on July 17, as warm south-westerly winds bring in moisture into the country along the North Pacific high-pressure system, allowing for humid weather conditions. Chances of torrential downpours, especially in southern parts of the country as well as on Jeju Island, will be high as dry air gets strongly compressed with tropical moisture from the south. From July 20, the North Pacific high-pressure system is expected to expand above the Korean Peninsula, bringing high temperatures and nationwide heatwaves. While temperatures throughout this week will remain slightly above or below average temperatures from previous years, starting July 20, both high and low temperatures are expected to be well above average. However, due to the lingering moisture in the atmosphere from the weeklong rainfall, scattered showers and localised downpours are likely to occur during the afternoon in many areas nationwide. Employment Relations Amendment Bill Passes First Reading

Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke van Velden welcomes the successful first reading of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill, calling it a major milestone in helping businesses employ and contract with confidence. The Employment Relations Amendment Bill will now be considered by the Education and Workforce Select Committee where people can have their say on the proposed changes. 'This Bill reflects the Government's commitment to supporting New Zealand businesses and creating more and better opportunities for workers.' The legislation delivers on key commitments from the ACT–National Coalition Agreement, including: Clarifying the distinction between employment and contracting arrangements, giving greater certainty to both businesses and workers. Simplifying the personal grievance process, including the introduction of an income threshold of $180,000, above which unjustified dismissal claims cannot be pursued. This Bill also proposes removing the 30-day rule, allowing employers and employees to negotiate mutually beneficial terms from the start of employment, reducing compliance burden and increasing flexibility. 'I encourage all interested New Zealanders to have their say on the Bill, and I see the Select Committee process as an important way of strengthening the final Bill and making sure it works for a wide variety of working relationships and situations. 'I am particularly interested in hearing feedback on whether the gateway test criteria are workable and whether the test covers a variety of genuine contracting relationships. I am also interested in hearing feedback on the high-income threshold for personal grievances, both from those who may use it as an employer and those who would be affected as a worker. 'I am looking forward to hearing what New Zealanders have to say about the Bill during the Select Committee process,' says Ms van Velden. Notes:
