Browns can't catch break as videographer tumbles into Lake Erie during new helmet presentation

The Cleveland Browns' new alternate helmet wasn't the biggest story line after its unveiling on Wednesday in the middle of Lake Erie. That's because one of their videographers fell in the lake trying to capture the moment. Cleveland will be sporting a new helmet three times this regular season with orange-lettered brown uniforms. To show off the helmet, the Browns put together a big float on Lake Erie that featured an inflatable helmet replica of those the players would wear. But the franchise that just can't seem to get it right on the field also couldn't do so on the lake, as a videographer fell into the water while filming the moment the helmet was unveiled. Chomps, the Browns' mascot, was quick to throw a flotation device for the videographer, while a jet ski came over to scoop the man up. Could this be an omen for the Browns' season? Well, Cleveland fans have not been optimistic about the 2025 campaign after a rough year in 2024. The Browns went 3-14 in a season that saw quarterback Deshaun Watson tear his Achilles not once, but twice, and multiple backups trying to find a way to run Kevin Stefanski's offense. Heading into 2025, Watson isn't expected to be of use, meaning a quarterback battle will ensue at training camp featuring Joe Flacco — the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year with this team two seasons ago after helping them reach the playoffs — Kenny Pickett, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. The Browns have not won a title since the Super Bowl era begun, and in their quest to change that, the franchise has had some rough seasons, including a 0-16 finish in 2017. Since Stefanski took over in 2020, he helped lead the Browns to their first playoff berth since 2002, but they didn't make it past the Divisional Round. With quarterback questions and a tough division as always in the AFC North, there's more pessimism than optimism about the Browns entering 2025. But there's always that surprise in the NFL each year, and perhaps the Browns can make a splash (pun intended).

New Orleans Saints to debut white alternate helmet during 2025 season

The New Orleans Saints have a new head coach, a new quarterback and now a new alternate helmet. The Saints unveiled the white helmet Wednesday and announced that they will pair it with their all-white, throwback-inspired "Color Rush" uniforms. The white shell is adorned with tiny black flakes, and the heart of the tricolor stripe down the middle seems to be the old gold that matches the one used in the Saints' "Color Rush" jerseys. The helmet stripe, outlined in black, as well as in a thinner set of white lines, also features faint, mini fleur-de-lis. Advertisement The primary fleur-de-lis logo is gold — as opposed to its usual black color — with the thick, Sharpie-like black outline we're accustomed to seeing. The front bumper reads "SAINTS," whereas the back says "NEW ORLEANS" in a larger font. And, notably, the face mask is gold, too. The helmet is widely being received as a major upgrade to the black alternate the Saints introduced to their wardrobe in 2022. That one had a tapered stripe of distinct, gold mini fleur-de-lis. The stripe itself was much wider in the front than this year's alternate. It also had a black cage to match the black shell. Advertisement A white helmet is a first for the Saints, and so is a gold mask. The team has yet to announce which games it will wear the alternate helmet in 2025. New Orleans is embarking on a new chapter under head coach Kellen Moore, who won the Super Bowl this past season as the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator. The Saints drafted 25-year-old quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of this year's draft, and there's a good chance he's New Orleans' Week 1 starter now that Derek Carr is retired. Together, they signify the next era of Saints football. The white alternate helmet will be part of the fold as well.

New Orleans Saints, winless in black helmets, reveal new white helmet alternate

The New Orleans Saints will be patrolling in new domes in 2025, for a few games anyway. The team introduced a white helmet into its uniform closet Wednesday. It features a golden fleur-de-lis logo, gold face mask and a gold stripe down the center of the helmet with more fleur-de-lis baked into it. Unlike the team's black alternate helmet, there is no tapering effect. Two thinner black strips border the gold one. There are also black flecks adorning the white shell, giving the helmet a slight resemblance to vanilla ice cream. Advertisement The black helmet has been occasionally worn – but not widely embraced by the fan base – since its introduction in 2022. The league's relaxed restrictions for wearing alternate helmets provide options for the Saints. It would stand to reason they would use the white helmet with their Color Rush uniform, which features a white jersey and white pants with black and gold trim and gold numbers. The black alternate helmet had been exclusively used with that white-over-white combination, worn four times over the past three seasons but never in New Orleans. The Saints are 0-4 in those games. However the black one could now be worn with the club's black jerseys (and pants). Advertisement The Saints hop on a growing trend of teams adding white helmets to their inventories. Sixteen of the NFL's teams – exactly half – utilized a white helmet at some point during the 2024 season, the Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings among those who introduced them as alternates.
