«You Are My Mirror» : Amazigh theater and arts unite Morocco and Brussels

The Rif Association for Amazigh Theater in Al Hoceima and Magh Space in Brussels are unveiling the artistic creation You Are My Mirror this Friday in the Moroccan city. The project follows a residency involving five Moroccan and Brussels-based artists from both sides of the Mediterranean. Supported by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, as well as the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and the Wallonia-Brussels General Delegation in Morocco, the production blends stage performance, poetry, rap, and slam in Amazigh. It will be presented at the Moulay Hassan Cultural Center's theater. According to the two organizations leading the project, this work is the culmination of efforts that began in 2023, following meetings between local artists and associations in Al Hoceima with author Fatiha Saïdi—a psycho-pedagogue and gender expert—Belgian-Moroccan singer Fatoum from the Rif, and cultural trainer and facilitator Abderrahim Mekkaoui. The goal was to «offer people living in rural areas the opportunity to engage with a blended culture, with a particular focus on reaching women who face even greater challenges due to the absence or scarcity of cultural venues and limited opportunities to participate in artistic projects or spaces for expression», they told Yabiladi. Moreover, the project aims to energize joint creation through a «participatory and benevolent» approach. It seeks to strengthen the cultural bridge between artistic operators in Brussels and Al Hoceima, promoting the exchange of best practices. The initiative also strives to «raise the profile of local artists and break the cultural isolation they still experience despite recent efforts». Another objective was to «blend artistic expressions by allowing artists to 'give voice' to the sound of the adjoun (bendir)», fostering a musical transmission rooted in tradition. On stage, personal reflections on identity and universality become a collective exploration. «The play also addresses the threats looming over identities—threats that can sometimes be deadly, to paraphrase Amin Maalouf», as the artists invite the audience to witness «their identity writing, starting from a blank page and evolving through multiple artistic mediums». This creative process has forged strong bonds among the members of an intercultural and intergenerational troupe, notably including Rifian actress Dounia Lahmidi (Noomedia), and Rifian singer and musician Abdelaziz Benhaddou, founders of the Twattun ensemble and pioneers of Amazigh song in the Rif. The group also features university researcher and poet Saïd Abbouti, rapper and slammer Mathieu D'Angelo (Maky), neutral mask practitioner Chaib Massaoudi, poet and photographer Yasmine Messaoudi, and graffiti artist and rapper Djamel Oulkadi.

Morocco to draft new law on the National Press Council, Communication Minister says

The Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, announced on Monday in the House of Representatives the drafting of a new law concerning the National Press Council (CNP). The draft has been reviewed by the government in terms of form, while its content will be discussed with industry professionals as part of the profession's self-regulation process. Responding to questions about the self-regulation of the press sector, the minister explained that the lessons drawn from the self-regulation experience have informed the drafting of this text, with the aim of producing «a law that guarantees self-regulation and the moralization of the press profession». Bensaid elaborated on the self-regulation experience that led to the establishment of the CNP, describing it as «far more than an administrative measure», but rather «a reflection of a profound awareness that press freedom, as enshrined in the Constitution, can only be realized through self-regulation mechanisms». He stressed that self-regulation is designed to reinforce press freedom and uphold the constitutional right to practice the profession. He also highlighted that Article 28 of the Constitution underscores the importance of organizing the press sector on democratic foundations. Self-regulation, he continued, seeks to protect the profession from unethical or unprofessional practices that could damage its reputation, including fake news, disinformation, and other harmful behaviors. Bensaid concluded by emphasizing that self-regulation is not solely the responsibility of journalists, but a shared societal concern, given that the press serves society as a whole.

French Culture Minister visits Moroccan pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival

French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati visited the Moroccan pavilion during the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, held from May 13 to 24. She was accompanied by Abdelaziz El Bouzdaini, Secretary General of the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, and Gaëtan Bruel, President of the French Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC). This visit is part of the film co-production agreement signed on May 18, 2024, between Morocco and France, aimed at supporting the emergence of young Moroccan filmmakers. The Morocco-France co-production workshop provided a platform for young Moroccan talents to present their fiction and animation feature film projects, facilitating professional meetings with French producers. Rachida Dati emphasized the importance of cultural cooperation between the two countries, particularly in cinema and animation. She also highlighted the commitment of young Moroccans in the growing sectors of gaming, video, and animated films. For his part, Abdelaziz El Bouzdaini noted that the bilateral agreement has already yielded concrete results, with five projects selected through a call for applications, mostly led by young directors. B2B meetings were organized to enable project leaders to engage with co-producers. Two projects were presented to Rachida Dati: a 3D animated feature film and a movie incorporating elements of artificial intelligence. Morocco is strongly represented at this edition of the Cannes Film Festival, with a pavilion at the International Village and a stand at the Film Market to promote Moroccan cinema.

Morocco Signs Two Agreements to Develop Its Video Game Industry

Rabat — Morocco has signaled its keenness to boost its video game industry with two groundbreaking partnership agreements for the sector's development in the North African country. These agreements mark a significant step in the country's efforts to develop this promising sector. The first agreement, signed between the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication and the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, is set to launch specialized video game development programs in Moroccan public universities. These programs are designed to offer technical university diplomas for baccalaureate plus two years of higher education, bachelor's, and master's degrees. The agreement also includes the establishment of 'Game Labs' in public university spaces. Universities in the region of Rabat-Sale-Kenitra are expected to launch the new training programs in September 2025 as a pilot, and will later expand nationwide for the 2026-2027 academic year. Meanwhile, the second agreement was signed between the Ministry of Communication and the Office of Vocational Training and Employment Promotion. It focuses on developing vocational training programs. According to this agreement, three qualifying training tracks will be launched for emerging professions, including e-sport caster, e-sport streamer, and video game laboratory specialist. This collaboration aims to embrace new professions and align university and vocational training with job market needs in the video game industry, which offers more than 150 different career paths. The global video game market currently generates $300 billion in transactions annually. Morocco is actively working to attract foreign investors, encourage the creation of national companies and startups, and support Moroccan talent in this field. The government has recently joined forces with the French embassy to foster local gaming and strengthen Morocco's position in the global gaming market. The initiative is set to provide Moroccan video game production companies with comprehensive support customized to their specific needs. In March, the Moroccan government approved a new decree to prepare plans to grow Morocco's video game industry as part of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication.
