Singapore Shuttle Bus Drivers End Strike After Company Gives Salary Assurances

Subscribe to our FREE About 100 Singapore shuttle bus drivers resumed work on Tuesday after their company promised to announce new salary adjustments. The drivers launched a strike on Monday morning (21 July) over recent wage restructuring that reduced their monthly income by RM800 to RM900. A 35-year-old driver who identified himself only as Atoi said the strike was not meant to inconvenience passengers, but was a protest against unfair new salary and work arrangements. 'We just want our old salary and work arrangements restored,' he said, adding that drivers only wanted to defend their wage rights. The strike caused thousands of Malaysian workers commuting to Singapore to be stranded at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI), with some forced to walk across the Johor Causeway to reach their workplaces. Bus services to Singapore resumed smoothly from 5 a.m. this morning (22 July) after Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee Chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh met with the company and drivers on Monday afternoon. 1-hour long wait for a non-existent Causeway bus from Johor Bahru. Ended up walking all the way to Singapore in 30 minutes. Services Back to Normal Half of the striking drivers agreed to return to work on Monday evening after more than five hours on strike, while the rest resumed their duties this morning following company assurances of a new salary announcement. Malaysian worker Anwar Ahmad, 29, who works in Singapore's cleaning sector, observed how the shuttle bus services were fully restored on Tuesday, with no long queues at BSI, unlike the severe congestion experienced the previous morning. 'Thank God, today bus services to Singapore are back to normal and smooth, with no long lines this morning,' he said. Mohamad Fazli, who is also Bukit Pasir assemblyman, confirmed that shuttle bus services to Singapore by the local company had resumed, saying several matters were discussed and he hoped all issues could be resolved. Johor Proposes Earlier Bus Operations to Ease Congestion Meanwhile, the Johor government has proposed that Singapore shuttle bus operators at BSI start their services earlier, at 4:30 am, compared to the current schedule of 5:00 am to 5:30 am daily. Mohamad Fazli said the state government is also looking to increase bus frequency due to monthly passenger growth of 1,000 to 3,000 people based on Immigration Department statistics. However, the proposal to control bus operations will be reviewed by Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA), given that MRT services in Singapore start at 5.35 am. Following a two-hour inspection at BSI from 4:00 a.m. on Monday with the LTA and bus operators, including Handal Indah, SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Ridewell Travel, Singapore-Johore Expressway, and Transtar Travel, Mohamad Fazli said the LTA would discuss and decide on the proposals soon. LTA informed him that Handal Indah provides 24-hour services with a minimum interval of 30 minutes during off-peak hours and nearly 150 trips during peak periods. Johor ready to assist 127 kkr projects in pre-implementation stage

JOHOR BARU: A total of 127 projects under the Works Ministry (KKR) in Johor have been identified as still being in the pre-implementation stage. State Works, Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said that the projects are among those that should have been implemented from 2016 to 2024. "However, when we checked, the actual allocation that went to KKR only involved nine (projects)." "The others are like for example the Education Ministry (MoE) building schools and projects being handed over to KKR to manage, and there are issues like land issues (and so on)," he said to reporters when met here today (June 24). He said this when asked to comment on the 222 projects, estimated to be worth RM10 billion, that were identified to be implemented between 2016 and last year in Johor. He said his team had met with KKR to discuss the cause of the delay, while also explaining that the state government is ready to provide appropriate assistance, including issues related to land and utilities. Yesterday (June 23), Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was reported to have said that the projects involved various facilities such as roads, mosques, hospitals and health clinics. He also hoped that leaders at the federal level would entrust the state leadership in approving projects for the people in that state. Meanwhile, Mohamad Fazli, in a Facebook post, stated that the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) Shuttle Tebrau service, which is one of the modes of transportation that carries passengers back and forth from Johor Baru to Singapore, will cease operations within six months after the Rapid Transit System (RTS) starts operations on Jan 1, 2027. According to him, the shuttle will be used to increase the frequency of trips from Johor Sentral to Kempas Station, thus becoming an alternative to alleviate traffic congestion in the city of Johor Baru. With a track length of 1.1 kilometres (km), the service, which can carry an average of 8,635 passengers per day, began operating on July 1, 2015, with a frequency of 31 round trips per day. — BERNAMA

Final E-ART route proposal expected by August

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The final alignment proposal for the Elevated Automated Rapid Transit (E-ART) system is expected to be announced this August, the Johor State Legislative Assembly was told today. State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, said it is subject to the outcome of the Request for Proposal (RFP) evaluation by the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS). 'UKAS has initiated the RFP process for the E-ART system implementation as part of efforts to complete the integrated transportation network in Greater Johor Bahru. 'The E-ART system will cover three main corridors, namely Skudai, Tebrau and Iskandar Puteri, and will be integrated at the main interchange station at Bukit Chagar, ultimately supporting the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS),' he said at the assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar. He was responding to a question from Datuk Ramlee Bohani (BN-Kempas) about the government's measures to tackle the worsening traffic congestion in Johor Bahru, including short—and long-term plans to address the problem. He said the E-ART system will significantly ease traffic congestion, improve daily mobility and support the state's low-carbon agenda. Mohamad Fazli was previously reported to have announced the development of the E-ART system, which involves 32 stations and is estimated to cost nearly RM7 billion. He said the state government has set up the Greater JB Special Traffic Dispersal Committee, which has identified 77 congestion areas and taken action in more than 20 locations. 'This committee has also proposed measures such as the installation of lane barriers, traffic information boards, and enforcement during peak hours, which have been presented at the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Congestion and Safety. '...the dispersal plan includes the closure of Jalan Ledang leading to the Skudai Highway (the exit ramp from Taman Johor to Skudai), which has successfully reduced traffic pressure in the area,' he said. Mohamad Fazli said the government is also studying the need to increase road capacity, including widening roads, building new bypasses, carrying out regular maintenance, and implementing more modern traffic management systems to support future economic growth and traffic density. 'Therefore, the state government has submitted a list of 18 proposed projects to the Highway Network Development Plan (HNDP) consulting services to review projects that should be prioritised for approval,' he added.
