Tripura suspends SDM over truck driver's death
Agartala: The state govt has suspended the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Teliamura and issued a show-cause notice to the district magistrate (DM) of Khowai following a preliminary inquiry into the tragic death of a truck driver. The driver, Mihir Lal Debnath (26), was trapped inside his vehicle for seven hours after an accident on NH-8. CM Manik Saha criticised the delayed rescue efforts for the victim. A three-member inquiry committee, led by the secretary of revenue (Relief, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management), has been established to investigate the incident. SDM Teliamura Parimal Mujumdar has been suspended immediately, while DM Khowai Rajat Panth and the OC of Teliamura Fire Station have been served show-cause notices. The govt has announced a financial aid of Rs 6 lakh for Debnath's family. The accident occurred at 2.30 am on Aug 5 in Chakmaghat, Khowai district, when a cement-laden truck veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Despite efforts by disaster management personnel, malfunctioning rescue equipment allegedly delayed the operation, leading to Debnath's death. In response to public outrage and concerns over the state's disaster response efficiency, social welfare & social education minister Tinku Roy and industry & commerce minister Santana Chakma visited the bereaved family. "We are committed to ensuring accountability and maintaining public trust in the government's systems," said Saha. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Tanjung Bidara coastal upgrade project on track, says Melaka Exco
ALOR GAJAH: The Tanjung Bidara coastal upgrading project is progressing smoothly without delays, according to Melaka Senior Executive Councillor Datuk Rais Yasin. As of June 25, the project has achieved 40 per cent physical completion, five per cent ahead of schedule. Datuk Rais Yasin, who oversees Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management, stated that the project remains on track for completion by September 14, 2026. He dismissed claims of suspension, clarifying that any temporary pauses were due to necessary design revisions rather than delays. 'Although there was a temporary pause in physical works at the site due to necessary changes in the original design following structural impacts caused by wave action, the project was never suspended,' he said. The RM2.29 million project, which began on August 15 last year, aims to protect the Tanjung Bidara coastline from erosion and high tide effects. The Coastal Zone Management Division (BPZP) of the Melaka Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) reassessed the original design to ensure long-term coastal protection. - Bernama

The National Center for Emergency, Crisis, and Disaster Management has warned of increasing desertification and drought, particularly in the southern and central regions, due to climate change and rapid environmental degradation. In a statement marking the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on June 17, the center called for strengthening national preparedness to address drought within disaster management plans and for mapping affected areas to prioritize intervention. It also emphasized the importance of supporting afforestation and land reclamation projects, raising public awareness through media and education, adopting sustainable agricultural and water policies, and reducing random groundwater depletion.
