Fans in disbelief over Hollywood actor Vin Diesel's real name

Fans have been stunned to learn that Fast & Furious legend Vin Diesel isn't actually called Vin Diesel, with the story of his stage name dating back to his pre-fame years as a New York bouncer Known for his tough guy persona, the very name Vin Diesel conjures up images of an action hero ready for any scenario, whether that be racing cars at top speeds or fighting in intergalactic battles. Many have therefore been stunned to learn that Vin Diesel isn't actually called Vin Diesel at all, having deliberately picked a stage name that would better reflect his super buff public image. ‌ Away from the bright lights of the movie studio, however, the 57-year-old Fast & Furious legend goes by a very different moniker. ‌ In a 2005 appearance of The Ellen Show, a clip of which has since gone viral, host Ellen DeGeneres pressed Vin on the moniker 'Vin Diesel', which she asserted couldn't "possibly" be the name on his birth certificate. To the amazement of viewers, California-born Vin confessed: "You know what, it's not." He then went on to reveal: "My real name is Mark Vincent." Going on to detail the origins of his famous stage name, Vin explained that it dates back to his time working as a New York City nightclub bouncer. He shared: "I was a bouncer for nine years, and the name stuck. We all had fictitious names just in case we got in trouble or anything." While Vin is of course a shortened version of Vincent, 'Diesel' is a reference to the star's love of working out. Vin continued: "Vin from Vincent. [...]When you're probably built up a little, you say, 'that guy is diesel'." ‌ Fans have naturally been baffled by this revelation, with one aghast person tweeting: "Vin Diesel has a real name?" In a humorous nod to Vin's most famous character, another commented: "I think we all know that his REAL name is Dominic Torreto." Of course, Vin is far from the only Hollywood star who has opted to go for a completely different name. Whoopi Goldberg of Sister Act fame was, in fact, born Caryn Elaine Johnson, but wanted something that would stand out a little bit more in the world of showbiz. ‌ As Whoopi explained in her 2024 memoir, Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, the name she is best known for was partially inspired by her tendency for flatulence. She admitted: "Some people at the Rep called me Whoopi because I would sometimes let loose with a fart." Meanwhile, acclaimed Golden Globe winner Jamie Foxx is actually called Eric Marlon Bishop. During a 2024 appearance on Angie Martinez's radio show, the Django Unchained actor divulged how his pick dates back to his early days as a stand-up starting out in LA. He recalled: "I went on as Eric Bishop [and] killed. Standing ovation. I come back the next weekend. You sign your name. I don't get on. Next week, I don't get on again. Come to find out, the comics are running the list. So I could never get on." ‌ After trying out another venue, Jamie found he had more success using "unisex names" due to male comics vastly outweighing the number of female comics. The name Jamie Foxx git him booked, and he's stuck with it ever since. Legally Blonde icon Reese Witherspoon is another A-lister who has opted for a different name. Born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon, Reese ultimately decided on a name that felt more 'Hollywood', as previously reported by Women's Health.

5 films shot in Tayside, Fife and Stirling that are set to be released

Hollywood has come to Tayside, Fife and Stirling over recent months to shoot a series of films. Crews have descended on the region for a number of upcoming major productions. Stars including James McAvoy, Christoph Waltz, Brian Cox and Alan Cumming are involved in the new releases. Similar film and TV projects have brought millions of pounds to the area in the last year. The Courier has taken a look at films recently shot in Tayside, Fife and Stirling that are set to be released in the near future. Hollywood star James McAvoy was in Dundee in November as the Hilltown offered a backdrop for his upcoming movie California Schemin'. The film tells the true story of two Dundee students who pretended to be American rappers to get a record deal. Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, who called themselves Silibil N' Brains, went on to support Eminem and his group D12 before their hoax was uncovered. Filming took place on Dudhope Street and Hilltown before moving inside the Hilltown Court multi – with actors seen hanging out a window. Scenes were also filmed in the streets outside Tannadice Park, home of Dundee United. Although it is still to be confirmed how the movie will be released, Bankside Films says it will be introducing the title to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Film crews descended on St Andrews in October to shoot scenes for an upcoming adaptation of Jay Parini's 'novelised memoir' Borges and Me Crews were spotted on the town's Hope Street shooting scenes using classic cars and on West Sands Beach, where they filmed horses galloping along the sand. The movie, starring Fionn Whitehead, Luis Gnecco and Alan Cumming, follows Parini's journey chauffeuring blind Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges through Scotland in 1970. Borges and Me also filmed on location in Gartmore in Stirlingshire. A release date for the film has not been announced. Filming for the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein was rumoured to have taken place in Arbroath in September. Production vans and staff were spotted in the grounds of Hospitalfield House. The film is set to star two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, who was spotted walking around Dundee city centre the same week. Guillermo del Toro is directing the production while Dune and Star Wars actor Oscar Issac is taking on the role of Victor Frankenstein. Meanwhile, Saltburn star Jacob Elordi is playing his monster. Frankenstein is set to be released on Netflix in November. Brian Cox and Alan Cumming were in Gartmore in Stirlingshire in September as filming began for the Dundee actor's directoral debut. Glenrothan, set in a fictional town of the same name, follows the story of two brothers – played by Cox and Cumming – who must reunite to save their family's distillery. The Dundonian and Perthshire actors also spent time in the nearby village of Kippen. Cox, renowned for playing media mogul Logan Roy in Succession, has been developing the film with Scottish writer David Ashton. A release date is yet to be announced. American model and actress Caprice Bourret filmed scenes for her new Christmas movie in Perthshire. The former supermodel visited Aberfeldy and Pitlochry to shoot The Scottish Christmas Secret. Film crews transformed The Watermill bookshop and cafe in Aberfeldy into a festive movie set, while an estate house in Pitlochry was also used. The movie stars Caprice as book publisher Tiffany, who must travel to Scotland after the disappearance of reclusive author Nathan McAllister. Perthshire jewellery designer Sophie McGown spoke to The Courier about her surprise role in the festive flick. The film is expected to be released later this year.

15 Ways To Find More Meaning And Purpose in Your Life Over 60

Turning 60 is not just a milestone; it's a fabulous opportunity to redefine your life's purpose with the wisdom and flair that only experience can bring. Forget outdated ideas about aging—this is your time to be bold, to explore, and to truly enjoy life on your terms. Whether you're seeking adventure, deeper connections, or a personal renaissance, these 15 ways will help you inject more meaning and purpose into your days. Who says fashion is only for the young? Embrace your personal style and let it evolve with you. Experiment with new looks, colors, and accessories that make you feel fabulous. According to Sixty and Me, exploring new styles can boost your confidence and reflect your inner vibrancy. The right wardrobe can empower you to step into each day feeling more confident and inspired. Consider consulting with a stylist or attending fashion workshops tailored for mature audiences. Remember, style is a form of self-expression, and there's no better time than now to showcase your unique flair. Who says classrooms are only for the young? Diving into new subjects can reignite your curiosity and keep your mind sharp. Consider enrolling in courses that pique your interest, be it art history, digital photography, or even a new language. Many universities offer programs tailored for seniors, often at discounted rates. According to Sixty and Me, engaging in lifelong learning can provide a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. Beyond traditional classes, explore workshops or online platforms that offer flexible learning schedules. Platforms like Coursera or MasterClass provide many options to suit your interests. Engaging in continuous learning not only broadens your horizons but also connects you with like-minded individuals. It's about staying curious and keeping the spark of discovery alive. Sharing your skills and experiences can be incredibly fulfilling. Whether it's mentoring young professionals, assisting in community projects, or offering your expertise to non-profits, your contributions matter. According to Psychology Today, volunteering not only benefits the community but also enhances your own sense of purpose and well-being. Studies show that people who volunteer regularly report higher levels of happiness and satisfaction. Look for opportunities that align with your passions. If you love gardening, consider helping out at a local botanical garden. Enjoy reading? Volunteer at a literacy program. The key is to find roles that resonate with you, making the experience rewarding and enjoyable. Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine can bring clarity and peace. Practices like meditation help center your thoughts and reduce stress. According to Harvard Health, engaging in mind-body activities such as meditation or yoga can be beneficial for relaxation and overall well-being. These practices can improve focus, boost mood, and even enhance brain function. Start with just a few minutes each day. Find a quiet space, focus on your breath, and let go of distracting thoughts. Over time, this practice can enhance your emotional health and provide a deeper sense of connection to the present moment. Unleash your inner artist. Whether it's painting, writing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument, creative activities can be deeply fulfilling. According to ScienceDirect, engaging in creative pursuits can reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and promote emotional well-being. Expressing yourself through creativity can help you process emotions and create a sense of joy. Creativity also fosters problem-solving skills, encouraging you to think in new and unexpected ways. Don't worry about being perfect—just enjoy the process. Sign up for an art class, start a journal, or take dance lessons. Creativity is about exploration, not perfection. You don't have to be a master painter or a professional poet to find joy in self-expression. The act of creating something that speaks to you is what truly matters. Traveling isn't just about sightseeing; it's about meaningful experiences. Instead of simply checking off tourist attractions, try immersing yourself in different cultures, learning new traditions, or participating in volunteer travel programs. Visiting new places with an open mind can challenge perspectives and bring new inspiration into your life. Travel also forces you to embrace the unknown, which can be invigorating and deeply transformative. Consider slow travel, where you spend more time in one place to truly absorb its essence. Whether it's a meditation retreat in Bali, a wine tour in Tuscany, or a road trip through the national parks, traveling can reignite your passion for life. Solo travel can be a particularly empowering experience, giving you time for reflection and self-discovery. Wherever you go, let it be about more than just a destination—let it be a journey into yourself. Friendships are essential at any age, but maintaining them requires effort. If your social circle has shrunk over the years, now's the time to reconnect or forge new bonds. Relationships provide emotional support, laughter, and a sense of belonging, all of which are vital for happiness and longevity. Research suggests that strong social connections can even improve heart health and boost immune function. Join local clubs, attend community events, or simply reach out to old friends for a coffee date. Be intentional about fostering meaningful relationships—quality matters more than quantity. Consider hosting dinner parties, game nights, or book clubs to create regular social touchpoints. Surrounding yourself with positive, like-minded people can enhance your well-being and keep you engaged with the world around you. Ever wanted to write a book, start a podcast, or launch a small business? Now is the time. Passion projects can give your life a new sense of direction and an outlet for your creativity. They can also be a great way to leave a legacy—something that continues to impact others beyond your lifetime. The beauty of a passion project is that it's entirely on your terms; there's no pressure, just joy. Break your project into small, manageable steps and take it one day at a time. Whether it's knitting handmade blankets for charity, writing personal essays, or curating an online vintage shop, the key is to engage with something that excites you. The process of building, creating, and nurturing something uniquely yours is what makes it so fulfilling. There is no 'too late' when it comes to pursuing something you love. Health isn't just about diet and exercise—it's about balance, joy, and sustainability. Rather than jumping into restrictive regimens, focus on nourishing your body in a way that feels good. This could mean swapping ultra-processed foods for fresh, whole ingredients, discovering a new love for strength training, or simply prioritizing daily movement like walking or stretching. Taking care of your health at this stage isn't about trying to look 30 again—it's about feeling strong, energized, and capable of living fully. Consider integrating practices like Tai Chi, Pilates, or even water aerobics, which are gentle yet powerful for both the body and mind. Sleep is just as important—make sure you're getting deep, restful nights by optimizing your sleep environment and winding down properly. Emotional health matters too, so pay attention to your stress levels, practice self-care, and don't hesitate to seek therapy or counseling if needed. The goal is to create a lifestyle that supports longevity while still allowing room for indulgence and pleasure. Life doesn't stop teaching after 60, and neither should you stop learning from it. A growth mindset means embracing change, seeing challenges as opportunities, and staying open to new experiences. This mindset helps reframe the aging process from something to fear into something to celebrate—a chance to keep evolving, discovering, and thriving. Instead of saying, 'I'm too old for this,' start asking, 'Why not now?' It's about shifting from limitations to possibilities. Try something you've never done before, whether it's learning how to surf, taking a stand-up comedy class, or simply switching up your daily routine. Engage in activities that stretch your comfort zone—it's where the most growth happens. Surround yourself with people who encourage curiosity and fresh perspectives. Keeping an open mind isn't just beneficial for mental agility—it makes life more exciting. There's something undeniably healing about being outdoors, whether you're strolling through a quiet forest, sitting by the ocean, or tending to a garden. Studies have shown that spending time in nature reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and improves overall well-being. Yet, in modern life, we often disconnect from these natural rhythms. Reintroducing nature into your daily or weekly routine can be a profound way to feel more grounded and connected to the world around you. Make it a habit to take morning or evening walks in a nearby park. Try hiking trails that offer breathtaking views or take a trip to a national park you've never visited. Gardening is another deeply therapeutic way to interact with nature—there's something incredibly satisfying about growing your own flowers, herbs, or vegetables. If mobility is an issue, even sitting outside with a cup of tea and listening to the birds can be transformative. The key is to slow down and let nature do its quiet, restorative work. Your wisdom is valuable, and the world needs it. Whether it's mentoring a younger colleague, offering guidance to a grandchild, or sharing life lessons with someone just starting their journey, your experiences hold immense power. There's a unique fulfillment that comes from helping someone navigate challenges you've already faced. Your insights—whether about career paths, relationships, or simply navigating adulthood—can provide a guiding light for others. Look for mentorship opportunities through community organizations, professional networks, or even informally within your own social circles. Volunteer as a tutor, become a mentor for a young entrepreneur, or simply be available for those in your life who seek your perspective. In giving advice and sharing stories, you may find yourself reflecting on your own journey in new ways. The process of mentoring is often just as enriching for the mentor as it is for the mentee. Clutter isn't just physical—it's mental, emotional, and even digital. Letting go of unnecessary possessions, commitments, and distractions creates space for what truly matters. Too often, we hold onto things out of habit, attachment, or guilt. But simplifying your life doesn't mean giving everything up; it means curating your surroundings to reflect what's most meaningful to you. Start with small, manageable steps—perhaps by decluttering your closet or organizing sentimental keepsakes. Consider downsizing if your home feels too large or filled with things you no longer use. Digitally declutter by clearing out old emails, unsubscribing from unnecessary notifications, and simplifying your online presence. Minimalism doesn't mean lack—it means freedom. And when you remove what's unnecessary, you make more room for experiences, relationships, and the things that bring you joy. This stage of life is an invitation to deepen self-acceptance, self-love, and self-compassion. Society often tells us that after a certain age, we should shrink—fade into the background. But what if this is actually the time to step forward more fully as yourself? Reflect on what makes you happy, what excites you, and what kind of life you want to cultivate. Take time for self-care—whatever that looks like for you. Maybe it's meditation, skincare rituals, long baths, solo travel, or reading for hours with no interruptions. Journaling can also be a powerful way to reconnect with yourself—write about your dreams, fears, memories, and aspirations. Most importantly, let go of any outdated expectations about who you 'should' be and embrace exactly who you are, right now. Laughter truly is the best medicine, and yet, as we grow older, we sometimes forget how to be playful. There's a joy in letting go, being silly, and finding humor in everyday life. Laughter lowers stress hormones, boosts immune function, and even strengthens social bonds. So why not make it a priority? Surround yourself with people, content, and experiences that make you laugh. Watch a ridiculous comedy, swap funny stories with friends, or join an improv class just for fun. If you have grandkids, play with them in a way that brings out your own inner child. Seek out joy in unexpected places—dancing in the kitchen, singing in the car, trying something completely absurd just for the thrill of it. Life is too short to take everything seriously. Find ways to embrace the unexpected, the awkward, the humorous—because that's where some of the best moments happen.
