Jordan–UAE Economic Partnership Agreement Takes Effect, Ushering in New Era of Strategic Collaboration - Jordan News

Jordan–UAE Economic Partnership Agreement Takes Effect, Ushering in New Era of Strategic Collaboration Jordan and the United Arab Emirates will officially activate their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on Thursday, marking a milestone in bilateral cooperation aimed at deepening ties across a wide spectrum of economic sectors. اضافة اعلان The agreement, which was signed in October last year under the auspices of His Majesty King Abdullah II and UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is designed to open new avenues for strategic collaboration, unlock investment opportunities, and promote economic integration between the two nations. Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply, Yarub Qudah, said the agreement represents a major leap in economic cooperation and lays the groundwork for dynamic partnerships, particularly by encouraging the private sector to capitalize on synergies in areas such as industry and trade. "The agreement provides a flexible and modern framework to reduce technical barriers, open markets, and facilitate the flow of goods in a fair and non-discriminatory commercial environment," Qudah noted in a statement to Petra. It also establishes a joint investment council and broadens cooperation in services, creating new channels for cross-border business and enterprise. UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, highlighted the strategic significance of the agreement, stating that the two countries aim to boost non-oil bilateral trade to over $8 billion by 2032, up from $5.6 billion in 2023. "This agreement signals a new chapter of constructive collaboration with Jordan," Al Zeyoudi said. "It strengthens our economic and trade relations, builds a platform for shared growth, and expands opportunities for long-term partnerships between our business communities." He emphasized the UAE's longstanding strategic partnership with Jordan, citing a 138% increase in non-oil trade over the past decade. The UAE is Jordan's fifth-largest global trading partner and its leading foreign investor, with mutual investments valued at approximately $22.5 billion. The agreement eliminates or reduces tariffs, dismantles trade barriers, and enhances supply chain connectivity paving the way for significant growth across sectors such as renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, logistics, and tourism. Al Zeyoudi noted that Jordan's skilled workforce and strong industrial base especially in phosphate, textiles, and pharmaceuticals complement the UAE's capabilities in infrastructure, energy, and finance, creating a collaborative ecosystem with global reach. The CEPA was concluded in just three rounds of negotiations, a testament to both countries' shared commitment to fast-tracking mutual economic benefits. Al Zeyoudi also underscored the agreement's role in empowering SMEs by easing trade restrictions, encouraging innovation, and offering platforms that engage the next generation of entrepreneurs. The agreement is part of the UAE's broader CEPA strategy, a cornerstone of its economic diversification agenda. The UAE aims to double the size of its economy to $800 billion by 2030 and exceed $1.1 trillion in non-oil trade by 2031. With 27 CEPA deals now concluded globally, the UAE has extended its commercial reach to over a quarter of the world's population. Notably, this is the UAE's first CEPA with an Arab nation, and the first to come into force underscoring both countries' commitment to fostering stronger trade and investment ties, advancing entrepreneurship, and supporting the growth of SMEs across the region. Consumer Complaints Down 13% in First Third of the Year - Jordan News

The number of consumer complaints received by the Consumer Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply decreased by 13% during the first third of this year compared to the same period last year, according to figures released by the Ministry. اضافة اعلان Statistics show that the Directorate received a total of 315 complaints during the first third of 2025, compared to 360 complaints during the same period in 2024. Consumer complaints were primarily related to after-sales services, accounting for 157 complaints — nearly 49% of the total. This was followed by complaints about defective goods, which reached 90 complaints or about 29%. As for the top three sectors with the most complaints: First: Services sector with 97 complaints Second: Electrical appliances sector with 82 complaints Third: Automotive sector with 56 complaints Ministry spokesperson Yanal Barmawi stated that the decline in consumer complaints is largely due to awareness campaigns launched by the Ministry to educate citizens on the Consumer Protection Law, issued a few years ago to strengthen market oversight and consumer protection. Barmawi explained in a press statement that the Ministry has closed 209 complaints — 66% of all complaints received since the beginning of the year. Additionally, 24 warnings and 9 violations were issued. He added that the Ministry handles complaints based on applicable legislative provisions, including: Consumer Protection Law No. 7 of 2017 Industry and Trade Law Competition Law Ministerial Decision No. 99 on mandatory vehicle warranties. Barmawi noted that the Ministry receives complaints through various communication channels and works to resolve them in a way that satisfies consumers without harming the rights of providers, in coordination with relevant parties. 'If non-compliant providers fail to resolve the complaints, a formal notice is issued requiring them to rectify the issue within a specified period. If the issue is not resolved, a violation report is filed against them,' he said. The Ministry, through its Consumer Protection Directorate, also monitors markets and misleading advertisements by reviewing suppliers' websites and ensuring they comply with their published advertisements. It follows up on any reports of misleading ads and works to correct violations. Additionally, joint inspection campaigns are conducted with related authorities to oversee commercial establishments and providers. Barmawi also emphasized the Ministry's role in public awareness, which includes launching campaigns and awareness activities in collaboration with relevant entities. Among the key consumer tips are: obtaining a detailed purchase invoice and clear warranty terms, testing and inspecting items before buying (regardless of their type), and requesting the supplier's contact information when possible. Consumers can file complaints through the 'Bekhedmtkom' platform, the Ministry's official website, its Facebook page, or via WhatsApp at 0797527819. It's worth noting that Article (3) of Consumer Protection Law No. 7 of 2017 outlines the rights of consumers, including access to goods and services that meet their intended purpose without harming their interests or health, and access to complete and accurate information about the product or service and its sale conditions. The core tasks of the Consumer Protection Directorate include receiving and verifying complaints from consumers or consumer protection associations, monitoring misleading advertisements, and taking necessary action to address violations.

Govt admits some samples of octane in Egypt failed to meet specified standards

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in Egypt announced the results of nationwide studies into complaints received from citizens regarding octane, along with additional measures approved by the ministry to ensure the product's compliance with standard specifications. In a statement, the ministry confirmed the detection of some non-compliant samples at gas stations. The ministry decided to disburse an amount equal to the approved invoice value to replace the fuel pump, with a maximum of LE 2,000, to those who filed complaints via the hotline 16528 or the government complaints system website. Citizens will be contacted successively by the ministry, the ministry added. The statement explained that compensation will only be provided if the complaint was filed between May 4-10, and the complaint relates to the same period. Documents proving the complainant's ownership of the vehicle be submitted, along with a certified invoice proving the replacement of the vehicle's fuel pump. A total of 870 complaints were recorded nationwide between May 4-9, regarding the quality of octane products offered in local markets. Up to 807 samples were analyzed from various governorates by teams from the Ministries of Petroleum, and Supply, as well as neutral analysis companies. It found that 802 samples met specifications and only five failed. The ministry said added that some necessary measures have been added regarding locally produced octane. These include not releasing any product from refineries for consumption until samples have been analyzed in two different laboratories and the results verified, instead of requiring analysis in a single laboratory. Issues not widespread The Ministry's official spokesperson, Moataz Atef, said that the Ministry of Petroleum has received several complaints regarding octane quality via its hotline. He noted that most of the complaints came from a single geographic area, and that gasoline fraud is not widespread but is instead limited to a number of cases in certain areas. The head of the Automobile and Spare Parts Dealers Association Osama Abul-Magd, noted that the automotive sector was not affected by the adulterated octane scandal, but that spare parts sales were. He referred to an increase in the import of fuel pumps, with sales up 15 percent over the past week. Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm

Of the total jobs created, 1,138 jobs were filled by women, the minister said, representing a 25 per cent rise in female employment, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Qudah said the fund's first round of programmes has achieved 'tangible' outcomes, boosting both export performance and development capabilities within the industrial sector. Out of 1,400 companies that applied for support, 368 were selected during the first phase, with the highest number of beneficiaries coming from the food industries sector, he said. Qudah also said that the platform has received 1,139 applications for the second round of funding, of which 102 companies were approved under the Outcome-Based Incentive Programme, and 43 under the Export Credit Guarantee Program. He said that assessment results for two other initiatives, the Industrial Modernization and Export Promotion Programmes, are expected in May and June. 'The fund's impact has been significant. Exports from supported companies rose by 29 per cent to JD118 million, while total sales surged by JD533 million, reflecting a 28 per cent growth,' he said. The minister said that the overall cost of the development plans reached approximately JD80 million, with the fund's contribution reaching JD41 million, or 51 per cent of the total, and the remaining JD39 million financed by the private sector. Jordan, UK explore deepening trade ties under partnership agreement

AMMAN: Jordan and the UK have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic and trade cooperation under the framework of their 2021 bilateral partnership agreement, the Jordan News Agency reported. During talks in Amman on Saturday, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply Yarub Qudah met with British Trade Envoy to Jordan, Kuwait, and Palestine, Iain McNicol, to discuss progress made under the deal and explore further avenues of collaboration. Philip Hall, the British ambassador to Jordan, also attended the meeting. According to a statement from the Jordanian Ministry of Industry, the discussions touched on efforts to streamline rules of origin and the development of mechanisms to monitor the agreement's implementation; chief among them the launch of a Partnership Council and technical committees. Qudah highlighted several ongoing challenges, including the complexity of the rules of origin, and the comparatively high costs of compliance and export for Jordanian producers. He stressed the need to review the terms of the current agreement to ensure Jordanian products are granted preferential access to UK markets— particularly in light of the United Kingdom's Developing Countries Trading Scheme, which offers more favorable terms to other nations. McNicol affirmed Britain's 'keenness' to deepen trade ties with Jordan and expressed support for improving the Kingdom's investment environment. He also emphasized the UK's commitment to sustainable trade initiatives, including support for small and medium-sized enterprises, and stimulating British investment in Jordan's 'vital' productive sectors. Looking ahead, both sides agreed to accelerate preparations for the upcoming Jordanian-British Business Forum, which they said would provide a key platform to strengthen private-sector ties and explore new areas of economic cooperation.
