National TVET Day a testament to govt's commitment to build dynamic workforce
KUALA LUMPUR: National TVET Day, celebrated annually on June 2, is a manifestation of the government's determination and commitment to positioning Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a primary pathway in producing a dynamic, highly skilled, and future-ready workforce. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the celebration highlighted the progress of the country's TVET ecosystem as a key driver of human capital development, while also serving as a platform that offers educational and career opportunities in the TVET sector through the involvement of various stakeholders. In a post on X in conjunction with the National TVET Day celebration today, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the National TVET Council Committee chairman, said the efforts made were in line with the Malaysia Madani framework, which places the TVET agenda as one of the priorities. The efforts, he said, include expanding access to TVET education to rural students, improving training facilities, and encouraging youth who want to build future careers through skills. "In fact, with the strong support of various parties, including the government, private sector, educational institutions and the community, TVET will remain the main thrust in building a more inclusive, progressive and globally competitive Malaysia," he said. In this regard, Ahmad Zahid invited the public to join in the celebration of National TVET Day 2025, to be held from June 11 to 13 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Melaka. The theme of this year's TVET celebration is "TVET, the Top Career Choice." – Bernama

Council set up to strengthen skills training: Prioritise TVET, Chief Minister tells youths

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor called on youths in the State to open their minds and view Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a primary choice for building a bright future, not merely an alternative pathway. He said TVET now plays a significant role in the economic and social development of the State, in line with technological transformation and the current needs of the industry. Advertisement 'TVET not only equips individuals with practical skills, but is also synonymous with empowerment, job opportunities and economic growth,' he said when launching the Sabah TVET Council (MTS), here, Monday. His speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister III/State Public Works Minister Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya. Hajiji said the TVET courses currently offered have been tailored to meet the needs of the fast-evolving job market and industrial sectors, making it a stable and viable career path for young people. 'I urge youths in the State not to hesitate to participate in the TVET field. Now is the time to change the perception and see TVET as a smart choice that opens doors to becoming professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators,' he said. According to him, the Sabah TVET Council is a commitment by the State Government to strengthen the technical training ecosystem, coordinate over 160 TVET institutions across the State and ensure that every graduate produced is truly ready to face the challenges of the working world. Advertisement He said TVET is also considered a key driver for the State's development goals through the Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0 Development Plan and national strategic documents such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030), the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). Hajiji also touched on the current technological revolution, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), which requires the younger generation to be equipped with new skills that are adaptive and innovation-oriented. 'The world of work is changing. If Sabah's youths are not prepared with relevant skills, we will be left behind. TVET is the best platform to develop a highly skilled human capital that will drive the State's progress,' he stressed. He said the launch of the Council marks a new era in empowering youth development through structured training aligned with industry needs – positioning Sabah as a competitive skilled workforce hub at the national and regional levels. Hajiji said it is not just an administrative structure, but a strategic platform that unites government agencies, training institutions, the industrial sector and key TVET players into a cohesive and inclusive ecosystem. According to him, the Council also acts as a policy coordinator, a driver for skills training direction and a strategic liaison for development fund applications from the Federal Government. Ahmad Zahid wants Risda to establish high-tech rubber depot in Sabah
TENOM: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) to establish a High-Tech Rubber Depot in the district to boost the rubber industry and support smallholders in the state. Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the Rural and Regional Minister, said Sabah has excellent potential in the rubber industry, adding that the state has the largest rubber plantation area in the country, spanning 202,536 hectares or 25.69 per cent of Malaysia's total rubber cultivation area. 'With the establishment of the depot, Risda should also develop downstream rubber-based products commercially, including conducting research into biofuel derived from scrap rubber, as one kilogramme of coagulated rubber residue can produce five litres of biodiesel known as RISDA Biofuel,' he said. He said this when delivering his speech at the state-level Risda's programme for smallholders, Pekebun Kecil Makmur, at the SJK (C) Chung Hwa hall here today. At the ceremony, Ahmad Zahid announced Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin as the honorary national advisor for Risda to ensure the voices of smallholders in the state continue to be heard. Ahmad Zahid said the government strives to stabilise the rubber industry despite the current low rubber floor price. '...the floor price for cup lump is set at RM5 per kilogramme, and the current market price has reached RM5.01 per kilogramme, as seen in Tangkak, Johor. We need to transform the rubber industry from a sunset industry (declining) into a sunrise industry (growing) by injecting elements of high technology and innovation,' he added. He said Malaysia was once among the world's largest natural rubber producers from the 1930s to the 1990s, but due to price issues and labour shortages, it is currently the world's sixth-largest rubber producer. 'Therefore, Risda must find solutions. Develop technologies, train young people using the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) approach and mobilise them to the sector with new skills, not just as rubber tappers but as value creators,' he said. He also urged Risda to focus on replanting efforts and using old rubber trees in the furniture manufacturing industry. 'We have the potential to replant 40,000 hectares annually, which could generate up to RM9 billion in rubber timber value if fully utilised. The furniture industry should not be concentrated only in Muar, Johor. I propose that Tenom be developed as Risda's furniture industry hub in Sabah,' he added.
