‘Venice vibes': Videos of flooded Gurugram go viral, netizens say millennium city a 'bubble propped up by NRIs'

Gurugram witnessed a dramatic collapse of urban infrastructure on Wednesday evening as torrential rainfall battered the city, turning major roads into rivers and bringing traffic to a grinding halt. Videos of the waterlogged "millennium city" — home to multi-crore luxury apartments and corporate towers — flooded social media, prompting sarcastic comments and criticism. WFH Advisory Issued After City Chokes Under 133 mm Rainfall Following the chaos, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Thursday issued an advisory asking all corporate offices and private institutions to implement work-from-home (WFH) for their employees on July 10. The move aims to ease traffic congestion and ensure public safety. — ANI (@ANI) According to the advisory, Gurugram recorded 133 mm of rainfall over a 12-hour period, ending at 7 am on Thursday — including an "extremely intense" 103 mm downpour between 7:30 pm and 9 pm on Wednesday alone. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the district under an 'Orange Alert'. Traffic Jams, Inundation in Key Areas The impact was severe and widespread. The downpour submerged several stretches, including: Live Events Narsinghpur stretch of Delhi-Gurugram Expressway Areas near Basai and Golf Course Extension Road Roads around Rajiv Chowk, Sheetla Mata Road, Sadar Bazaar, Bus Adda, and Sectors 4, 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 30, 31, 40, 45, 47, 48, and 51 — ANI (@ANI) A 7-8 km-long queue of vehicles clogged NH-48 from Narsinghpur to Rajokri in Delhi. At Subhash Chowk, nearly 2.5 feet of water had accumulated, with traffic snarls persisting until 2 am. Social Media Erupts: 'Luxury Living or Water World?' As visuals of submerged luxury neighbourhoods went viral, residents and netizens took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent frustration and ridicule the city's poor infrastructure. 'Who buys Rs 10 crore flats in Gurgaon without even checking the drainage? Just 30 minutes of rain and it's Venice out here,' wrote one user, calling the city a 'bubble propped up by NRIs and investors.' — arun_mathuria (@arun_mathuria) Another viral post featured a flooded Golf Course Road, sarcastically captioned: 'For the unversed, this is the same road where apartments are sold for Rs 100 crores. Venice vibes and doorstep thrill surely deserve this price. #LuxuryLiving #GurgaonRains' — sumedhasharma86 (@sumedhasharma86) Others questioned the misuse of taxpayer money: 'Millennial city with this kind of drainage system! Where are the taxes going? Down the drain — literally.' — sumedhasharma86 (@sumedhasharma86) Some users mocked the state government's plan for a Disneyland-style amusement park near the city: 'Govt plans a Disneyland near Gurugram, but has already started building water parks.' — kunalsharma1284 (@kunalsharma1284) A particularly biting comment read: 'Please start a boat service in Gurugram.' — khushhal_garg (@khushhal_garg) The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) came under fire as users demanded accountability. Videos from multiple locations showed inundated underpasses, stranded vehicles, and pedestrians wading through knee-deep water. With rain continuing to lash parts of NCR and more showers forecasted, the city's fragile infrastructure is once again under the scanner — raising questions about the sustainability of rapid urban expansion without adequate public services. — DrJain21 (@DrJain21)
