I Was Sidelined by Illness. This Soup Got Me Back in the Kitchen.
A good recipe offers a clear set of instructions and a satisfying result. A great one is much more, engaging our imagination with each step, offering a way to replicate a meal after it's been considered, made, consumed. But what happens when our ability to cook the food we love suddenly changes? What does it look like to document a sensory experience through an intermediary? Recipe: Light Soup With Mushrooms In December 2023, after a lifetime in kitchens working on the line and then developing recipes for cookbooks and magazines, I experienced a health crisis that kept me from cooking for well over a year. During that time, I began to accept the fact that making new recipes — a balance of passive observation and active adjustments — would require careful planning and, because of physical limitations, even more steps in an already complex dance. The processes I undertook seamlessly before would have to be accomplished much more slowly, and collaboratively. I would have to watch as assistants cooked via my words, acting as more of a passenger than driver, and hand over tasks that had, before my illness, become second nature to me. Want all of The Times? Doechii accused of 'mistreating' her assistants during 2025 Met Gala debut after shocking viral video
Doechii has been accused of being rude to her assistants after a viral video appeared to catch her shouting at them as she prepared to make her Met Gala debut on Monday. In several viral clips ahead of the fashion event of the year, the 26-year-old Anxiety rapper was seemingly heard yelling at her helpers to bring her more umbrellas as she attempted to exit The Mark Hotel. The commotion began when Doechii was filmed trying to exit the hotel elevator where she was immediately flanked by paparazzi in the lobby. Amid the chaos, her team quickly attempted to hide her from photographers by shielding her behind a white wardrobe screen. They had also pre-emptively handed Doechii a singular umbrella. In videos shared on TikTok, Doechii was then heard loudly telling her crew: 'Yes, I'm ready.' She then shouted, 'Give me another umbrella, now!' before adding, 'And another, go!' Her team members were then heard shouting at onlookers to clear a path so they could push the wardrobe screen out of the hotel with Doechii hiding inside it, but the commotion continued. As they left the hotel, the group tried hard to make sure Doechii was sufficiently covered from the downpour. 'Don't let her hair get wet,' one was heard saying. But the madness showed no sign of slowing down as Doechii attempted to get to her sprinter van without anyone getting a sneak peek. Some social media users were critical of the artist for her 'attitude' and didn't hold back their thoughts. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one said: 'Love Doechii but she was talking crazy to them. I would've said f*** the damn umbrellas.' Another wrote: 'That's why I could never be a famous person's assistant because you aren't going to talk to me like that.' 'All that drama for an outfit that doesn't even hit, she needs to chill with the attitude,' a third added. Others, however, leapt to Doechii's defense and pointed out that she was probably just 'under pressure and stressed.' Taking her side, one said: 'The question is why is SHE micromanaging… Shouldn't there be someone paid to oversee and make sure that she's covered? 'If that's what the team agreed on. I think mistreating is a very strong word. 'It's giving mismanagement, someone should have made sure it was all sorted!' Agreeing, another commented: 'The Met Gala is high stress and I can see how things get messy behind the scenes. 'Quit giving her such a hard time it was probably just her anxiety,' said a third. 'I think she was just under pressure and stressed,' added one social media user. 'Heaven forbid an artist wants their vision executed the way they intend…' said a sixth. has reached out to Doechii's representatives for comment. For the milestone occasion, Doechii opted for a bold Louis Vuitton outfit and puffed on a cigar while posing for snaps. She was dressed in a monogrammed jacket and accompanying checkered Bermuda shorts. Doechii teamed the look with burgundy loafers, knee-high socks and a silk scarf tied in a bow. Her look was further elevated with Tiffany & Co. jewelry and completed with a Louis Vuitton stamp on her cheek.
