As hot weather returns to the UK and ahead of the last Bank Holiday of the year, the RAC has issued advice on using bike racks safely. In a statement on its website, a spokesperson for the motoring agency said there are several types of bike rack available. "Installing a bike rack onto your vehicle gives you and your family the opportunity to experience the great outdoors almost anywhere in the UK," said the statement. "However, ahead of your road trip, there are several key factors you need to consider." Keep within the law The statement goes on to explain how motorists can keep within the law. "If this is the first time you are planning on attaching a bike rack, it is important to know what style is needed," the spokesperson added. "There are three main types of rack – rear mounted, tow bar, and roof – and users should be aware of the pros and cons each of them offer." The agency explained that rear mounted bike racks are the most commonly found style here in the UK, as they are the most cost-effective option for multiple bicycles. These racks can fit up to three or four bicycles. "Rear mounted racks are simple to install and can be stored easily." However, buyers should be aware that they do not fit all models of cars and should check whether they can be attached to your vehicle. In outlining the pros and cons of attaching a roof rack, the RAC said they are easy to install but can affect the handling of the car, particularly in high winds, The statement added: "Unlike rear mounted racks, they do not obstruct car lights or number plates – something that can cause legal issues, and even fines up to £5,000." Advice has been issued to all taxpayers, as emails are doing the rounds claiming to be from HMRC and telling people they're owed money - but it's far from the case A warning has been issued to all taxpayers as HMRC scams are currently circulating in the UK. Online advice has been given to individuals as emails are being sent out claiming that people are due a refund. The alert was put out by Citizens Advice and shared on TikTok in an effort to discourage people from clicking on these links. The video was accompanied by a written warning, which read: "Watch out for HMRC scams. Criminals are impersonating HMRC to steal your money or personal information." It was highlighted that these scams often come in the form of emails, texts or phone calls, claiming that you're entitled to a tax refund or that you owe unpaid taxes. While it's crucial never to give out personal information, there are instances where people are genuinely due a tax rebate, but there are steps you can take to check this. The video pointed out that some people are tempted to click on links from scam emails to try and reclaim the "money", but this should be avoided as it could be fraudulent. HMRC suggests several ways to identify scams. Regardless of how frequently you receive them, it's essential to report any incidents, which can be done via their website. Advice on the HMRC website reads: "Do not open attachments or click any links in an unexpected email or text message, as they may contain malicious software or direct you to a misleading website. "Delete any emails or texts once you've reported them. HMRC uses QR codes in our letters and correspondence. The QR code will usually take you to guidance on "We will tell you if the QR code takes you anywhere else. You will never be taken to a page where you have to input personal information. "When you are logged into your HMRC account, we may use QR codes to redirect you. For example, to take you to your bank's login page. "HMRC does send text messages to some of our customers. In the text message we might include a link to information or to HMRC webchat. "We advise you not to open any links or reply to a text message claiming to be from HMRC that offers you a tax refund in exchange for personal or financial details."
