'Not All Auto Shops Are Created Equal:' Mechanic Says Always Ask One Question Before Having a Shop Service Your Car. Here's Why
A mechanic has a piece of advice for finding the right auto shop: Check to see if they have their Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. TikTok user Dillsboro Automotive ( @ ) posted this advice on July 5. In the video, a technician tells viewers what to ask when choosing a mechanic. 'When looking for an automotive repair shop, one of the smartest things you can do is ask if they're ASE certified,' he says. 'To get these certifications, a technician has to pass rigorous exams, and they have to have proven experience.' He continues, 'Another thing is that in order to keep these certifications, the technician has to be recertified every so often. So that means they have to stay up to date on the changes that keep coming out on these vehicles as they advance and change.' The technician says that becoming and maintaining ASE or other certifications means a mechanic is committed to investing the time and effort to stay up to date on changes in the industry. As the video concludes, he says, 'Anybody can say that they're a mechanic, but the ASE certifications help prove it." "Not all auto shops are created equal," the caption adds. People in the comments largely disagree with this advice. Are ASE Certified Mechanics Better? Trending Now 'Its Deserved Reputation:' Man Drives by European Body Shop. The nonprofit says it's dedicated to improving the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals in vehicle repair, service, and parts distribution. A panel of industry experts—including technicians, manufacturers, aftermarket manufacturers, and educators— writes the questions for ASE tests. The fail rate is rather high, per ASE. It claims that only two out of every three test takers pass on their first try. ASE-certified professionals must retake the test every five years to remain in good standing. In the comments, viewers debated the merits of an ASE certification. Most think it's overrated and doesn't mean someone is a good mechanic. One commenter called it a 'cash grab.' One person insisted, "I've seen plenty of ASE certified techs that can't fix a car. Those tests mean nothing." "Dealership techs are ASE certified," wrote a second. "That's all you need to know as far as what a joke that is." Another said, 'I've seen plenty that can't fix a sandwich. ASE is a waste of money.' More than one joked that ASE stands for 'ask someone else.' ASE had at least one defender in the comments. "All these people are mad at ASE," wrote one person. "Maybe y'all just aren't smart techs and want to stay parts changers." Motor1 reached out to Dillsboro Automotive via TikTok comment and direct message for comment. ‘Completely Rotted Out:' Man Pays $1,400 to Get His Brake Lines Replaced. Then a Different Mechanic Takes a Closer Look
A mechanic who goes by Carlos (@dailywrench) on TikTok says the brake line job another auto shop did was completely incompetent. He was shocked to discover the customer was charged $1,400 for a job that was incomplete. He says a customer previously took their car to a nearby chain auto shop to get the brake lines repaired. Supposedly, the shop replaced all the brake lines; however, he says the brake lines were completely rotted out and leaking when he inspected them.. 'If the brake lines were fully replaced, why are they using the original flair nuts? Why reuse an old component that's rusty and prone to leak again?' the mechanic questions. The mechanic says he called the previous shop to inquire about the brake line job. 'Hey, this car was here a few months ago, and the lines look the exact same,' he says. According to him, the manager refuses to explain the full service and claims the mechanic who worked on the car hand-bent all the lines. 'That's great if you actually did it. That's not really quality work using old flair nuts for $1,400,' the mechanic claps back. He says the manager becomes defensive, asking, 'Are you calling me a liar?' The mechanic says he had no intention of name-calling but firmly fights for the customer. 'It's not right to charge someone $1,400 for this job. The invoice had no job description, part numbers, or fitting. I wasn't calling to piss anyone off; I was calling for clarification,' he states. The mechanic says the manager hung up and called the customer, claiming they would fix the repair under warranty. The mechanic calls back asking if the shop will pick up the car since the mechanic believes it's not safe to drive the 25 minutes to the other shop. He says the worker asks where his shop is and then immediately hangs up, ignoring his request. 'I have zero patience for incompetence when it comes to something like this. This guy could've had his kids in the car, and his brakes went out,' the mechanic concludes. 'We need more mechanics, like you, man, honest, and dependable and trustworthy,' one TikTok commenter shared. 'That's what it's like dealing with shops that don't care,' another replied. How Much Should Brake Lines Cost? Brake lines are hoses that transfer brake fluid from a reservoir through a pump or modulator to a brake master cylinder to create hydraulic pressure, Kelley Blue Book reports. The pressure pushes the brake pads against the disc rotor or drum brake, which slows or stops the vehicle. If the brake pedal feels spongy when pressed, there is an issue with the brake fluid becoming depleted or air entering the brake lines. If this happens, the brake lines will need to be bled or flushed and replaced if they are damaged. And Why They Might Be Worth It According to Synchrony , the cost to replace brake lines is between $150 and $300 per brake line, including installation. There are at least four brake lines on every car, with one on each wheel. So, if each line needs to be replaced, it can quickly add up. Should the Auto Shop Be Reported? Many commenters mentioned reporting the business to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). 'They didn't touch a [expletive] thing. That customer should take them to court, and definitely shouldn't bring it back to that same place bro they're just gonna be more trouble,' one TikTok commenter said. '10000% would've called authorities especially over a major safety component like brakes. Definitely a bad situation though ridiculous shops get away with stuff like this,' a second replied. 'Better Business Bureau and the police. That's fraud and reckless endangerment,' a third said. Filing a complaint keeps businesses accountable. The BBB gives consumers confidence when making buying decisions, and businesses know this, Justice Direct reports. It's quick and free to file a report with the BBB, and the BBB does have a high complaint resolution rate. Motor1 has contacted @dailywrench via TikTok direct message. Georgia mom was stuck commuting 3 hours — until she ‘Googled' how to fix cars. Now she brings in $440K/year
After 10 years of building up a career as a medical assistant in Atlanta, Georgia, Desiree Hill felt trapped. Not only was she earning just $38,094 a year, but the job was getting increasingly stressful. 'It was long hours,' she told CNBC Make It. 'It was three hours of commuting in Atlanta traffic everyday and I never saw my children, so it really was taking a toll.' Then came the breaking point: a divorce that forced her to find new ways to support her family. But what started as a desperate side hustle — buying a beat-up $1,200 truck and teaching herself how to fix it via Google and YouTube — soon became something much bigger. That first flip netted her $4,000. By 2020, she had repaired and flipped more than 38 cars, enough to convince her it was time to quit her day job and go all-in. Today, the 39-year-old runs Crown's Corner Mechanics, a full-service auto repair shop in Atlanta with five employees. Her business brought in $440,000 in revenue in 2024 and her journey has drawn more than 120,000 TikTok followers. Want to follow in her footsteps? Here's how she turned a DIY hustle into a six-figure business — and how you can too. I'm 49 years old and have nothing saved for retirement — what should I do? Don't panic. Here are 6 of the easiest ways you can catch up (and fast) Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Here's how Want an extra $1,300,000 when you retire? Dave Ramsey says this 7-step plan 'works every single time' to kill debt, get rich in America — and that 'anyone' can do it Hill says she decided to try flipping cars because it was a relatively cheap side hustle. 'I knew it was something I could spend a very small amount on and maybe, potentially, make a lot of profit,' she says. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on professional training or buying a repair shop, Hill started with a small experiment — repairing a used truck she managed to purchase for just $1,200. If you're looking to switch your career or start your own business, low-cost experiments can help you test the waters and see if the new venture is the right fit, before overcommitting. If the experiment fails, you can walk away without any permanent damage to your financial situation. Although she made a sizable profit on her first flip, Desiree didn't quit her medical assistant job right away. Instead, she kept building her skills for several years while also working full time. 'I came home, made dinner, got my children all set for bed… and then I went to the [garage] and started working on the vehicles,' she says. 'Sometimes it lasts until 2-3 in the morning and then I get right back up at 6am and go to work.' Read more: No millions? No problem. With as little as $10, here's of diversified assets usually only available to major players Launching a business as a side hustle — dipping your toes, instead of diving in headfirst — is a smart, low-risk way to test the waters. And it's more common than ever: nearly 52% of workers now report earning extra income from a side hustle, according to The Wall Street Journal. Like Hill, if your side hustle starts to gain immense traction, you could consider leaving your job. But if it doesn't, you could still benefit from the additional income. Hill says she initially started sharing her journey online just to track her progress, but it quickly gained more traction than she anticipated. Today, her 120,000 TikTok followers have become a major source of new customers. In today's economy, using digital marketing and social media as part of your business strategy is absolutely essential.
