Nevada County deputies arrest woman suspected in axe attack following pursuit

Authorities in the Sierra Foothills arrested a woman over the weekend after she allegedly attacked another woman with an axe and led authorities on a pursuit. According to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, the victim was at her home in Nevada City Saturday afternoon when the suspect showed up. Initially thinking the suspect was a delivery driver, the victim waked outside to meet her. Deputies said the suspect pulled the axe from the trunk of her car and charged at the victim. "The homeowner ran for her life and was able to get back inside her residence and lock the door," the sheriff's office said in a statement. The suspect then struck the front door of the victim's home with the axe before leaving. Deputies said the suspect and victim had no known affiliation. The victim called 911. After providing a description of the suspect, a deputy near Highway 20 and Washington Road found the suspect vehicle with a woman matching the suspect description behind the wheel. During an attempted traffic stop, deputies said the suspect failed to yield, leading authorities on a pursuit for 13 miles. The California Highway Patrol along with police from Nevada City and Grass Valley assisted in the pursuit. Deputies said units had the suspect boxed in at a gas station in Grass Valley, but she was able to flee after backing her car into a CHP vehicle and attempted to run over a Nevada County sheriff's deputy. She had also struck another uninvolved motorist. The suspect was arrested off of Scopar Road, a dirt road in Grass Valley. Deputies said she assaulted a CHP officer which led authorities to place her in a body wrap. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Elisa Peraro of Grass Valley, was booked on suspicion of multiple offenses, including assault with a deadly weapon, evading police, obstructing a police officer, being under the influence of a controlled substance and vandalism. Jail records show Peraro remains in custody as of Monday.

NSW man refuses to appear in court after alleged high-speed chase in stolen Ford Mustang

A man accused of attacking a woman with an axe, stealing her Mustang sports car and running her over with it before leading police on a high-speed chase in the New South Wales has "refused" to leave his cell to face court. South Coast man Caleb Flentjar, 25, has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly leading police on a high-speed, 50-kilometre pursuit from Nowra to Kiama on Saturday. The 66-year-old owner of the car remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Today the Bail Division Court heard Mr Flentjar had "refused to see legal and refused to leave his cell" at Wollongong Police Station. His lawyer Cassie Lee told the court her client did not meet with her. "He refuses to see me and presumably anyone else," she said. Magistrate Daniel Covington confirmed the refusal with corrective services at Wollongong Police Station and then set July 22 as the next date for the accused to appear online at Nowra Local Court. "As for what has been relayed, he doesn't want to leave his cell or make an application … then I will note bail not applied for and bail refused," Magistrate Covington said. Mr Flentjar is charged with custody of knife in public place, two counts of use offensive weapon to prevent lawful apprehension and two counts of fail to stop at accident and render assistance. He has also been charged with drive whilst disqualified, pursuit, exceed speed over 45kph and goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen and larceny. Mr Flentjar is facing additional charges regarding three outstanding domestic violence-related offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV). The 25-year-old has been in custody since his release from hospital on Sunday following treatment for minor injuries. Police allege Mr Flentjar reached speeds of up to 180kph through 80kph zones as he wound his way up the M1 Princes Motorway on the wrong side of the road. It is alleged the chase came to an end when the Mustang crashed into a ute at Kiama Downs. Prior to that police had unsuccessfully attempted to halt the vehicle using tyre spikes. Police said members of the public stopped Mr Flentjar from fleeing on foot by "holding him down" until they arrived. The driver of the ute was taken to hospital.

25yo man arrested after alleged axe attack, and wild car chase in Worrigee, NSW

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly attacked a woman with an axe, stole her sports car and then led police on a wild car chase that allegedly resulted in a collision with a ute. Police were called to Rayleigh Dr in Worrigee, in NSW's Illawarra shortly before 1pm on Saturday following reports that a man was armed with an axe and hammer. They allege the man tried to throw the axe at a police car before retrieving it and running into a home on Illawarra Circuit. Police allege he then assaulted a 66-year-old woman with an axe while she was sitting in her Ford Mustang, before he forced her to exit her car and ran her over before driving it away. The 66-year-old woman has taken to Shoalhaven Memorial Hospital in a serious but stable condition and was treated for multiple leg and torso injuries. She has since been taken to St George Hospital in Sydney's South for further treatment. The man then allegedly led police on an extensive chase around Illawarra, which required the assistance of PolAir helicopters. While the car was found at about 2pm on the Princes Highway, the pursuit spanned multiple suburbs through Nowra, Bomaderry, Berry, Gerringong and Kiama, with authorities claiming the man reached speeds of 180km/h on 80km/h roads. While road spikes were used, the man allegedly swerved the impediments and missed a near-collision with a highway patrol officer. The lengthy car chase came to an end after the driver allegedly collided with a ute while driving on the opposite side of the Princes Highway at Kiama Downs, about 50km from Worrigee, where police were initially alerted of the incident. Members of the public apprehended the man and held him after he allegedly attempted to flee the scene. He was then arrested and taken to Wollongong Hospital where he remains under police guard. The driver of the ute was also taken to Wollongong Hospital for assessment. While inquiries into the incident continue, police have established a crime scene and seized an axe and jammer from the Ford Mustang for forensic examination.

German train passengers overpower Syrian axeman

Passengers on a high-speed train in Bavaria fought and overpowered a man after he started attacking people with an axe. The suspect, reportedly a Syrian citizen, lashed out at travellers on the German intercity train, which was en route to Austria on Thursday afternoon. One of the passengers managed to take the weapon and use it to stop the attacker, according to the German tabloid Bild. After passengers pulled the train's emergency brake, police arrested the suspect, who was said to have been seriously injured. Three passengers received moderate injuries while a fourth was lightly injured. Sohrab Taheri-Sohi, a spokesman for the Bavarian Red Cross, said: 'Due to a violent incident on an intercity train, there was a large deployment of emergency responders. 'According to our current information, multiple people were injured – one seriously injured, three moderately injured and one lightly injured.' Around 500 passengers were on board at the time of the attack. Mass stabbing or car-ramming attacks have become increasingly common in Germany, with many committed by mentally ill people or asylum seekers facing deportation orders. In May, a mentally ill German woman injured 17 people in a knife attack outside Hamburg Central railway station. In February, an Afghan asylum seeker crashed his car into a crowd of people taking part in a trade union march in Munich. It was the day before the Munich Security Conference, which was attended by world leaders. Last September, a Syrian refugee killed three people and injured eight others in a stabbing attack on a festival celebrating diversity in the western city of Solingen. The train attack came after Austrian authorities said they had deported a convicted Syrian criminal back to Syria on Thursday, in what they described as the first such case since the fall of the Assad regime in December last year. According to Krone, an Austrian newspaper, the deported Syrian is a 32-year-old 'fanatic' with links to Islamic State. Before being deported, he was serving a seven-year prison sentence. The newspaper cited Austrian intelligence sources, who said they could not give further details of the nature of his crimes for 'security reasons'. The interior ministry said the removal of the unnamed man was part of a 'strict and thus fair asylum policy'. Gerhard Karner, the interior minister from Austria's centre-Right Austrian People's Party (OVP), vowed to 'continue this chosen path with hard work and determination'. Since the fall of the Assad regime, some EU countries have been eager for refugees to return to Syria. Britain, among other European countries, paused the processing of new asylum claims from Syrians, based on the view that Syria would become safer under its new president, the rebel leader Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa. Austria took the same step and also stopped family reunifications. Around 100,000 Syrians live in the country, one of the biggest concentrations in Europe, while nearly a million Syrians live in neighbouring Germany. Austria's government, sworn in last March, consists of the centre-Right OVP and the centre-Left Social Democratic Party. Both factions are under intense political pressure to get tougher on migration, having come second and third place behind the far-Right Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) in last September's elections. Despite coming first place in the polls, FPO failed to form a coalition government after the result, as Austria's other political parties considered it too extreme to govern. Herbert Kickl, the leader of FPO, is sympathetic towards Russia and controversially once called for asylum seekers to be 'concentrated in one place', in what critics said was a deliberate allusion to Nazi camps. Mr Kickl strongly denies this. The FPO was founded in 1956 and first led by Anton Reinthaller, a former SS cavalry officer and Nazi minister.

Man ‘seriously injured' after attacking train passengers with axe

A man attacked and slightly injured four people with an axe on an ICE express train travelling from southern Germany towards Vienna on Thursday. The incident occurred between Straubing and Plattling in Bavaria, with approximately 500 people on board the train. The perpetrator was overpowered by fellow passengers and subsequently detained by police, with authorities saying he "is probably somewhat more seriously injured." Emergency services, including around 150 police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, were deployed to the scene, leading to the closure of the railway line. A special care centre was established for passengers, and psychological caregivers were on hand to assist those traumatised by the event. Man injures four in axe attack on German train, police say
