Longtime Denver Bar Is Closing After Close to 30 Years
A major Denver nightlife fixture will close in July after almost three decades in operation. The Giggling Grizzly, located at 1320 20th St in downtown Denver, announced last Thursday that it will shut down next month. According to a social media post from ownership, the building that houses the popular bar has been purchased by new developers. "As many of you know, some local developers bought the building that the Giggling Grizzly has been doing business in for nearly 30 years," the note reads. "We came out here all those years ago to expand our hospitality properties to the Rocky's, but what we found was family and friends. We have had sooo many ups, and sadly, some pretty sad downs, but we have loved every minute of it. We are so grateful to all of our Managers, Team Members, Vendors, our Hospitality Family on the block and You…our Guests!!!" The Giggling Grizzly officially has four weeks of business left. The bar's final day will be Sunday, July 6. "We will have one last 4th of July weekend with the Rockies and fireworks, and many days in between to come say Hi to all of our awesome team, and goodbye to a place that we hope has brought you many smiles, laughs, and maybe even a headache the next day:). Cheers to you all and we appreciate and love you!!" said ownership's post. According to KDVR, Monfort Companies purchased the building that houses the Giggling Grizzly, along with the neighboring jazz club El Chapultepec, in 2022. Earlier this year, the developer's renovation plans were approved, and they plan on beginning construction this summer. Until then, Giggling Grizzly fans can sneak in a few more rounds from the bar's dozen-plus taps and even more bottle options, and/or gobble down some pub staples. Luna Lounge in Cheektowaga announces permanent closure
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Luna Lounge bar in Cheektowaga announced its permanent closure in a social media post on Thursday, which follows concerns from residents and an order by the town to shut down earlier this month. Residents voiced their concerns after shots were fired outside of the Dingens Street bar on April 28, along with instances of noise, people gathering outside of the bar, speeding in the area and dealing with overflow from the parking lot. Cheektowaga residents concerned after shooting outside bar Jacob Piorkowski, the attorney who represents the owners of Luna Lounge, previously said several steps were taken to regulate the noise and crowds in the bar's parking lot. Cheektowaga Police Chief Brian Coons said police have responded to the lounge 114 times in the past year. The cease and desist from the town cited the dance halls' capacity as a reason for the order, according to Piorkowski. Piorkowski said his clients asked for a dancing permit from the town two times, but were told that it doesn't exist. He also said at the time that his clients were willing to work with the town in order to reopen. Attorney cites dancing as reason for Luna Lounge closure following 'shots fired' incident 'While we can fight this in court, it's evident that neighborhood challenges would hinder peaceful operation,' the Luna Lounge said in the social media announcement. 'We sincerely appreciate your support and love throughout this journey. Rest assured, we're working on something even better.' The bar said it will announce updates and upcoming shows on its social media. Katie Skoog joined the News 4 team in April 2024. She is a graduate from the University at Buffalo. Sadness as town-centre bar announces ‘heart-breaking' closure
The owner of a popular town centre bar and restaurant has thanked his customers for an 'incredible journey' after making the heartbreaking announcement it is to close in a matter of days. The Courthouse, which is located on Mawdsley Street, will be closing its doors on May 26 after last orders. The Grade II listed building was taken over in 2018 from previous owners who had run it as Harvey's Café Bar. Before that, the bar was known as Henry's and opened in 1996. Speaking to The Bolton News owner Husky Faldu said: "We want to thank our customers for their support over the years, we have been on an incredible journey and couldn't have done it without them. "They're a part of our memories just as we are a part of theirs. We're grateful for the special times shared over the past eight years." One of the groups that used to meet at The Court House was the Chapter 25 book club, a communal space for women of all backgrounds to connect with others. Kate Ainsworth, 25, who was a member of the club said: "Chapter 25 has two Bolton groups, each with about 40 people. "There's a big sense of community. Everyone at the group identifies as a woman so its become more than just a book club, the age range is from 18 to 65. "I've met some wonderful people, including neighbours who I didn't even know lived right by me! "It's a lovely community that The Court House has fostered, it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Katie regularly used The Court House for the Chapter 25 book club. (Image: Katie Ainsworth) "Now, we don't know about the future of the club. We need more night venues, especially in places like Bolton. This area used to be so thriving, with independent companies cultivating community. "It's sad to see that this has become more difficult in recent times." Taking to social media, a spokesperson for the Courthouse said: 'It's with incredibly heavy hearts that we have to let you know we will be closing our doors on Monday 26th May. Iconic bar closes after seven years over ‘inability to pay bills' as owner says he's ‘devastated'
A POPULAR bar has shut down following months of financial struggles. The Rock Box in Blackburn shut down last week, with ownership reverting to Blackburn with Darwen Council. 2 2 Dylan Mitchell, who has managed the bar since July 2023, said the former owners are in discussions with the council about reclaiming ownership. Previous owners, Andy and Karen Joss, ran the bar for four years before Mitchell took over. In a 'tough' post on Facebook, Mitchell said he was 'devastated' that the bar had to close. Mitchell said: 'After months of difficult trading, low takings, and an ever-growing inability to pay bills, Blackburn Council repossessed the building this morning. 'As such, the Rock Box is currently closed. There's a possibility that the previous owners, Andy and Karen will be able to reopen as the Rock Box soon. I genuinely hope they do, to lose another bar in Blackburn is awful. 'I put my heart and soul into the Rock Box and ultimately failed, and I'm devastated.' At the end of his message, Mitchell added: 'Much love and keep rockin''. A council spokesperson has said it is 'always sad' to see a business close, clarifying that the change in ownership was not the reason for the closure. Councillor Quesir Mahmood, executive member for growth and development, said: 'We understand that the owner dissolved the business in December 2024, however continued to trade. Unfortunately, he could not sustain the rental payments and handed the property back to the council [last] week. 'It's always sad when a business closes. As a council, we are working hard to support our town centres and businesses as best we can. 'There's already keen interest from a potential new tenant for these premises. We anticipate that the bar will be ready to reopen very soon.' Fans of the bar shared messages of support for Mitchell on social media, saying The Rock Box had played a key role in supporting the local music scene. 'You did a bloody amazing job down there and helped out so many on the local music scene get their faces and music out to the people of a town where music and nightlife is being dealt blow after blow down to disastrous economic decisions by the council,' reads one of the comments. Another fan said: 'Blackburn Council need their heads wobbling. How out of touch can a council be to shut down something so valuable to the local music scene.' 'Dude I'm truly sorry to hear this. You are a person that deserves the best and every single person can see what you did to form THE community,' commented another fan wrote. 'Be proud of yourself because a lot of people will back that up. You brought it forward as best as within your control.' The Rock Box is among several bars that have announced they are shutting their doors in recent weeks. The Cask Inn on Cambridge Terrace in Scarborough is set to close this Sunday 18 May. The historic East London hotspot, The Gun in Homerton, has already closed, despite being hugely popular with locals. More than 400 pubs closed last year as the total number of boozers reached an all-time low. Some 412 in England and Wales — roughly 34 a month — shut and were demolished or converted into homes, offices and nurseries. What is happening to the hospitality industry? By Laura McGuire, consumer reporter MANY Food and drink chains have been struggling in recently as the cost of living has led to fewer people spending on eating out. Businesses had been struggling to bounce back after the pandemic, only to be hit with soaring energy bills and inflation. Multiple chains have been affected, resulting in big-name brands like Wetherspoons and Frankie & Benny's closing branches. Some chains have not survived, Byron Burger fell into administration last year, with owners saying it would result in the loss of over 200 jobs. Pizza giant, Papa Johns is shutting down 43 of its stores soon. Tasty, the owner of Wildwood, said it will shut sites as part of major restructuring plans.
