Introducing Botox in a bottle! I was sceptical when I heard about this £10 serum that everyone seems to be obsessed with - until I tried it myself. The results were stunning: BETHAN KING
As a beauty editor, I believe honesty is the best policy when it comes to my tweakments, so – full disclosure – I'm no stranger to Botox. I've dabbled with wrinkle-relaxing jabs to (temporarily) disappear the vertical frown lines between my eyebrows and the horizontal ones along my forehead for a couple of years.

The best sunscreen and SPF for the face and body, including sunscreens for children
Daily use of an SPF is the most effective step you can take to preserve your skin's health and prevent the appearance of ageing. Yet, whether it's down to texture, sensitivity or simply not having found the best sunscreen for you, it remains an elusive habit for many of us. Consultant dermatologist and founder of Klira, Dr Emma Craythorne, explains the need: 'SPF blocks both the UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B) rays which can cause damage including wrinkles, pigmentation spots, visible blood vessels and an increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreens absorb that UV energy and convert it into heat, which renders it harmless. Just make sure it's broad-spectrum and ideally SPF 30 or higher.' I've tested thousands of sunscreens during my career as a beauty editor, from £5 products by Garnier and Altruist, to La Mer 's £95 bottle. But not all will be the right formula for you, which is where this guide comes in. Below, you can find my full reviews, followed by Dr Craythorne's answers to some frequently asked questions. The best sunscreens: At a glance How we test sunscreen Every SPF here has passed my strict standards: lightweight, wearable and effective. I've tested dozens of formulas myself and given products to friends and family with different skin types to test. The first factor I considered was the level of protection: whether the sunscreens shielded against UVB rays and skin-ageing UVA radiation as per EU recommendations. This was hard to objectively test, so I considered whether I burnt or tanned while wearing the products. Water resistance was much easier to evaluate. I tested whether the sunscreens stayed put during exercise, rain and sweaty commutes. Thirdly, I kept an eye on safety and skin compatibility: did the sunscreen block my pores, cause irritation or trigger breakouts? I asked friends with sensitive skin to test and comment on this. I also wanted to know if the sunscreens were lightweight, wearable and comfortable enough to wear daily. I avoided anything greasy or with an overpowering scent. Finally, I considered the environmental impact, including whether it's reef-safe. Some chemicals used in sunblocks have been found to contribute to coral bleaching. I tested far more products than made it into this guide, with only the best formulas earning a place on the final list. Best sunscreens Sunscreens certainly aren't a one size fits all kind of product; most people will need a different product for their face and body, while gentle and water-resistant formulas are better for children. I've reviewed them all below. Best sunscreens for the face The right facial sunscreen needs to be effective, of course, but it should also fit seamlessly into your skincare routine and address your individual needs, whatever your skin type. From lightweight fluids to tinted hybrids, these options do just that. Best Buy Sunscreen for Face: Ultra Violette Future Fluid Superlight Mineral Skinscreen (SPF 50+) A premium product that delivers on multiple fronts; it's highly protective, hydrating and comfortable to wear, with a matte-but-natural finish that sits well under makeup. This is a brilliant all-round choice for a reliable, high-performance sunscreen that you'll actually want to use every day. This product is also a testament to the advancements in mineral sunscreen formulations, leaving no white cast even on deeper skin tones, thanks to its ultra-fine zinc oxide formula. The inclusion of squalane, derived from an oil present in your own skin, helps to keep it hydrated without feeling heavy or greasy, making it a great option for those with combination or slightly oily skin. The fragrance-free formulation reduces the risk of irritation, even around the sensitive eye area, which is a major plus for anyone prone to redness, sensitivity or hayfever. But my favourite pay off is the natural, skin-perfected skin finish. Key specifications Best Value Sunscreen for Face: The Inkey List Polyglutamic Acid Dewy Sunscreen (SPF 30) Compared to other sunscreens in a similar price range, this formula stands out by combining skin-loving ingredients with reliable sun protection at an accessible price point. The greatest value here comes from the hybrid nature. As well as protecting you from the sun, the formula includes polyglutamic acid, glycerin and squalane to deeply hydrate and plump your skin, making it a fantastic multi-tasker. Its broad-spectrum protection shields from both UVA and UVB rays and the lightweight, non-greasy finish means it works beautifully under makeup, making it a good choice for everyday wear. It's also fragrance free and non-comedogenic (meaning it doesn't block pores), which is a bonus for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. While the SPF 30 may not be enough for prolonged sun exposure, it's perfect for daily use, offering solid sun protection for anyone who wants an effective, hydrating sunscreen without breaking the bank; a great value choice. Key specifications Best Mineral Sunscreen: Hello Sunday Everyday One Mineral (SPF 50) This is a fantastic lightweight, hydrating formula that combines sun protection with skincare benefits. I particularly appreciate the additional benefit of hyaluronic acid – a broadly loved skincare staple – to keep skin moisturised while providing broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. This sunscreen is designed to be worn daily, either alone or under makeup. It gives a non-greasy finish, but is classed as a moisturiser, so needs topping up with additional SPF throughout the day for the best possible protection. That said, it is a photostable formula, meaning it is designed to maintain effectiveness and protection even after prolonged exposure to the sun. This product is absorbed quickly and benefits from immediate sun protection (rather than chemical sunscreens which need around 15 minutes to become active), plus the zinc oxide is great for sensitive or acne-prone skin. I did note a little pilling under makeup on hotter days, but this was easily avoided by using powder, rather than liquid foundation, over the top. The scent might divide opinion, but the lovely mattifying finish is too good for that to be a factor. Key specifications A standout daily sunscreen that combines very high protection with a weightless, hydrating formula. Although designed for all skin types, I found this particularly good for oily skin due to the lightweight, fast-absorbing formula that won't clog pores or feel heavy. It also dries down to a non-greasy, matte finish. Plus, it's formulated with barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, which can actually help balance oil production over time, making it a smart choice for anyone prone to excess shine. The addition of hyaluronic acid supports skin hydration, and it's this skin barrier boosting that Byoma is famous for. Some of those prone to high shine might need some additional mattifying makeup over the day to tone this down, but overall this a reliable, affordable option for anyone wanting effective sun protection with added skincare benefits. Key specifications Best Sunscreen for Acne-prone Skin: Vichy Capital Soleil Anti-Imperfections Water Fluid (SPF 50+) Score: 9/10 We like: Non comedogenic Anti-imperfection ingredients Hypoallergenic We don't like: Slight fragrance Not for dry skin types This Vichy sunscreen is a smart choice for oily, acne-prone, hormonal or combination skin, or for anyone who worries their SPF might give them spots. It combines high-level SPF protection with targeted ingredients to help reduce breakouts and control shine without feeling heavy or suffocating, which is the sunscreen holy grail for anyone with reactive skin. The standout here is the water-based formula, which makes it ultra-lightweight and fast-absorbing, leaving a fresh, barely-there finish on the skin. This is especially important if you're prone to congestion since heavier, cream-based sunscreens can sometimes feel too thick, clog pores and trigger breakouts. The safety net of two per cent niacinamide to calm redness and refine the look of pores, plus 0.3 per cent salicylic acid to gently exfoliate and keep skin clear over time, is a winning combination, albeit one better suited to oily than dry skin types. I also noticed that there was zero eye-sting. Finally, it's a mattifying fluid, so won't add unwanted shine throughout the day, and the non-comedogenic formula means it won't block pores, even on hot, sticky days. It's also fragrance-free, which reduces the risk of irritation. Key specifications Score: 9/10 We like: Lightweight Absorbs quickly Non-comedogenic Skincare benefits We don't like: Not suitable for very dry or delicate skin Any product that combines sun protection with anti-ageing benefits could make an excellent addition to your skincare routine. Included in this sunscreen from La Roche-Posay are some serious skincare credentials, like hyaluronic acid for skin-plumping and extra hydration, niacinamide for calming and brightening, and crucially for this product in particular, PHE-Resorcinol, which works to reduce pigmentation and dark spots. There's also LHA (lipo-hydroxy acid), a gentle exfoliator that helps to refine skin texture and reduce the look of fine lines over time. It's essentially a brilliant multitasker, helping to smooth, hydrate and protect. As a trusted SPF brand, La Roche-Posay is able to deliver broad protection to shield against the rays that cause most premature skin ageing. It's also non-comedogenic and fragrance-free, so it won't clog pores or irritate sensitive skin, and the water-based, non-greasy formula layers well under makeup, making it an easy choice for daily use. The downside of including anti-ageing actives is the exfoliating ingredients may be too much for very sensitive or barrier-compromised skin. Key specifications Score: 8.6/10 We like: Soothing Additional skincare benefits Extra hydrating No white-cast We don't like: Runny consistency Not suitable for oily skin Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua Fresh Rice + B5 is a K-beauty favourite (K meaning Korean) for good reason. It's a lightweight, hydrating sunscreen that genuinely feels like a skincare step, not just a sunscreen. The texture is a thin, milky fluid that absorbs almost instantly, leaving your skin feeling fresh and hydrated without a hint of grease or white cast, even on deeper skin tones. The combination of rice seed water, which gives a boost of moisture and a brightening effect, and Vitamin B5 which helps to soothe and calm redness or irritation make this an excellent choice if your skin tends to feel sensitive after sun exposure, or if you're prone to dehydration. I found that it layered beautifully under makeup and there's a noticeable cooling sensation on application that's particularly lovely on extra hot days. It's also fragrance-free, which is a bonus for those with reactive skin. Its fluid consistency can be a bit runny straight from the tube, so be prepared. And while it's lovely for normal to dry skin, those with very oily complexions might find it a little too dewy. Key specifications Score: 8.2/10 We like: Non-comedogenic Long lasting matte finish, Serum formula We don't like: Slight scent Not for very dry skin Australia has some of the strictest regulations in the world for sun safety, pushing Australian suncare brands like Mecca to excel in developing products that provide superior sun protection whilst also treating specific skin concerns. So trust is a given, but the ingredients and serum formula in this product make it a standout choice for best mattifying sunscreen. If you're seeking a sunscreen that delivers high protection without the high shine, then the white willow bark extract – known for its ability to control shine and reduce the appearance of pores – makes it particularly beneficial for those with oily or combination skin types. There's also a gentle exfoliant in there that helps to smooth texture for a more even complexion. It's non-comedogenic and the matte finish makes it an ideal base for makeup, whether you suffer with shine or not. I love how quickly it absorbs without leaving any greasy residue and the matte finish lasts well throughout the day, even in humid conditions. Key specifications Score: 7/10 We like: Makeup hybrid Skincare benefits Glow-boosting We don't like: Lower SPF Limited shade range This hybrid product gives a lightweight, skin-enhancing base for your makeup while providing SPF 30 protection. It's worth noting that a multitasker like this is not going to give you the full and total protection of a standalone SPF unless you slather it on, in which case the natural, sheer finish won't be quite as nice. However, the formula features microencapsulated pigments that burst and then blend naturally, adapting to your own skin to even out tone and reduce redness. The glow is a big bonus and comes from the porcelain flower extract, which does a great job of making skin looking radiant and refreshed. I tested the shade light/medium and I'd be more inclined to use it as a primer under a mineral foundation for an extra boost of natural sun protection, but I love the protective skin finish, especially since its lightweight texture makes it suitable for daily wear. Key specifications Best sunscreens for the body Body sunscreen has to work harder, covering more skin, withstanding sweat, sand and sea, all while being easy to apply on the go. These formulas stand out at offering high protection without costly beauty benefits. Best Buy Sunscreen for Body: Heliocare 360 Invisible Spray (SPF 50+) Score: 10/10 We like: Convenient spray Invisible Non-oily We don't like: Aerosol doesn't guarantee precise coverage This is a fantastic all-round body sunscreen that excels in convenience and protection. The invisible, aerosol formula makes for a quick and easy application, whether you're rushing out the door to work or reapplying on the beach after a swim. It leaves no greasy residue behind and there's no rubbing in. With a high broad spectrum protection, it ensures you're covered from the harmful effects of sun exposure and the lightweight formula dries down really quickly, so you can get dressed without having to wait. This is useful for on-the-go re-applications, too. One of the standout features of this product is its inclusion of Fernblock technology, which offers protection from environmental stressors like pollution. The formula also contains antioxidants to help fight free radicals, minimising the effects of sun-induced ageing. This product has ticked the most boxes for full body coverage and Heliocare is a trusted brand (they do a wonderful tinted SPF and non-comedogenic face formulas) so this product is a must-have for anyone looking for reliable, all-over body sun protection. It's also reef-friendly, meaning it does not contain any chemicals which contribute to coral bleaching. Key specifications Score: 8.2/10 We like: Hydrating formula Budget-friendly Non-greasy We don't like: Scent might not appeal This is a fantastic budget-friendly option that doesn't compromise on performance. The lotion offers high-level sun protection and is formulated with glycerin to offer additional moisturising benefits. You really feel the softening effects as soon as you apply it. The lotion absorbs quickly (I tried it after a shower and the same was true) and I'm impressed at the lack of white cast that you might expect from a lower-budget option. This is totally suitable for daily use, whether you're heading to the office or spending time outdoors, although I found it needed topping up every few hours to maintain both the protection and additional moisturising payoff. What makes this product truly excellent value is the dual-benefit formula and the generous 200ml bottle, which means you get plenty of use for the whole family. Key specifications Score: 9/10 We like: Water and sweat resistant Large area mist Cooling formula We don't like: Non-precision application might be wasteful This might be the ultimate multi-tasking sunscreen, designed for those who love the outdoors and active play, but basically excellent for anyone and everyone. The invisible, super-fine mist applies effortlessly, covering large areas without having to rub in, which means there's no risk of irritating sand abrasion. What's more, it's suitable for use on wet skin, making it well-suited for beach days, water sports or post-workout. The cooling formula is a bonus, providing a lovely refreshing sensation when applied. I particularly appreciate this feature and now can't imagine a hot holiday without it. The real win is the water and sweat-resistance, ensuring your protection stays intact even when you might forget to reapply when getting out of the pool. The versatility and all-round appeal makes this a reliable UVA and UVB safeguard, keeping your skin nourished and cool, whether you're the watersports type or prefer lounging in the sun. Key specifications Best Sunscreen for Dry Skin: Hada Labo Tokyo Super Moisturiser Sun Lotion (SPF 50) Score: 9/10 We like: Extra hydrating Easily absorbed Skin enhancing sheen We don't like: Not water resistant Needs regular reapplying Japan is a country where sun protection is deeply prioritised, due to the long-standing cultural importance of skincare. The demand for high-quality, effective sunscreens has led to innovative formulations. Hada Labo Tokyo Super Moisturiser Sun Lotion is formulated with hyaluronic acid, making it an excellent choice for dry skin or for those looking to keep their skin nicely hydrated throughout the drier summer months. The lotion absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving a lovely dewy finish that gives me an additional confidence boost in my shorts, and without any greasiness so I can get dressed immediately after application. The lightweight formula means it's comfortable for daily wear and I found myself reapplying for pleasure, rather than protection, because it feels so nice. It's also good for sensitive skin types, which I appreciated when applying it after shaving my legs. Key specifications Best sunscreens for children Kids need robust protection that won't cause tears or tantrums. These sunscreens are gentle on young skin, water-resistant for the pool and quick to apply, making sun safety as straightforward as possible. Score: 9/10 We like: Easy, fast application Non-greasy Hypoallergenic Sand-repellant We don't like: Slight staining possible This is a top-tier sunscreen designed specifically for delicate skin, with a reliable formulation that provides very high protection against both UVA and UVB rays. I want comprehensive sun safety for my kids, but I also want to cover them as quickly and efficiently as possible and this is where this mist wins for me. Firstly it's enriched with ceramide, which helps to strengthen the skin's natural barrier, plus it's hypoallergenic to minimise the risk of allergic reactions or general irritations. The super-fast spray makes for a quick and easy application, even on wet skin, which is particularly convenient when dealing with slippery children. One of the standout features of this product is its sand-repelling action, with a clever technology that prevents sand from sticking to the skin, which makes it my personal favourite holiday sunscreen, too. It's also water-resistant, sweat-resistant and non-greasy so the kids don't even notice it's there, which is what every parent really needs from their SPF. Key specifications Best Value Sunscreen for Children: Altruist Family Sun Spray (SPF 50) Score: 8.6/10 We like: Affordable, high protection for whole family Dermatologist developed Reef-friendly We don't like: Needs to be rubbed in to avoid white cast Trigger spray can get blocked Created by a dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon, this hard-working SPF 50 spray is suitable for the whole family, including babies from six months old. This makes it brilliant value, since you only need one bottle for the beach (although it's worth stocking up on more because you'll want to use it all year round, too). The spray application is good, with the white formula rubbing easily into the skin and leaving no residue whatsoever. But it does take a little extra effort and patience from the littlest kids. The formula is paraben free and gentle enough for sensitive skin, but the protection packs a punch, with full dermatologist specification broad spectrum. I love the sheen it leaves, too – giving a subtle but healthy glow. Key specifications £11.99 Buy Now Price at Boots Score: 9.4/10 We like: Water resistant Skin-soothing Hypoallergenic We don't like: Smaller bottle Need to ensure even, full coverage This is a dermatologist-developed sunscreen, designed specifically for the delicate skin of babies over six months and children. Eczema-prone skin is sensitive and can react negatively to the harsh chemicals or fragrances commonly found in sunscreens. The fact that this product is fragrance-free (thereby reducing the risk of irritation) and contains avocado oil, which is known to help to soothe and lock in moisture, makes this a key sunscreen for managing eczema and preventing flare-ups, caused by dryness or sunburn. This one is easily absorbed – again an essential for delicate or sensitive skin, as heavy formulations can sometimes exacerbate irritation. It also doesn't need much rubbing in. The water-resistance helps with less need for frequent reapplication. This is a trusted option for kids, but is also a good choice for adults with sensitive skin. Key specifications Best Sunscreen for Babies: Nivea Sun Babies & Kids Sensitive Protect Sun Cream Spray (SPF 50+) £8.25 Buy Now Price at Superdrug Score: 9/10 We like: Ultra fast absorption Protection from six months old Extra water resistant Fragrance-free We don't like: Needs to be rubbed in for full coverage My one-year-old inevitably started wriggling when I tried this SPF out on her, but the spray application allowed me to cover her flailing arms and legs without too much fuss. It sprays a fine, even mist that absorbs really quickly, so I wasn't left chasing her round trying to rub it in. The formula itself is impressively gentle. My baby's skin is prone to the odd patch of dryness, but this didn't cause any irritation. It's completely fragrance-free, which I like, as it means fewer potentially irritating ingredients. Despite being so light, it still feels protective. The high SPF 50+ is reassuring, especially on days when the sun is at its hottest, and I didn't notice any redness over the course of the day. The water resistance also proved its worth when the paddling pool came out. It held up well without any streaks or chalky residue, even when she went from towel-drying to straight back in the water within minutes (a familiar cycle if you have a baby). Key specifications Formulation: Spray SPF rating: 50+ Type of protection: Broad-spectrum UVA/UVB Skin type: Sensitive (suitable for babies and children) Volume: 270ml Sunscreen FAQs By Dr Emma Craythorne, Consultant Dermatologist and Founder of Klira What is the difference between PA+, PA++, PA+++, PA++++ UVA ratings? The PA rating system tells you how well a sunscreen protects against UVA rays. PA+ offers some UVA protection, but I always recommend going for PA++++, or checking for a five-star UVA rating or a PPD (persistent pigment darkening) value above 16. These are all strong indicators that you're getting the protection that you need against ageing and pigmentation. Is expensive sunscreen necessarily better than cheaper options? Not at all. The best sunscreen is one you enjoy using and can afford to use generously every day. If you've found one that feels great on your skin and you apply it correctly and consistently, stick with it. Price isn't the deciding factor. Just make sure it's broad-spectrum and ideally SPF 30 or higher. Does sunscreen expire? Yes, absolutely. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years, and using them past their expiry can mean significantly reduced protection. I always recommend writing the date you open the bottle somewhere on the packaging so you can keep track. But really, if you're using the right amount daily, you shouldn't have it hanging around that long anyway. Does sunscreen prevent tanning? Yes, sunscreen does help prevent tanning because it blocks the UV rays that stimulate melanin production. Of course, no SPF offers 100 per cent protection, so with prolonged exposure you might still get some colour, but if your goal is to manage hyperpigmentation or melasma, or to keep your skin tone even, then daily SPF use is absolutely essential. Should you apply sunscreen before or after moisturiser? You should apply your sunscreen after moisturiser—it's the final step in your morning skincare routine. That way, it forms a protective layer over your skin and does its job properly. If you're using a moisturiser with SPF in it, make sure it's high enough and offers proper UVA protection. How much sunscreen do you need to use? My rule of thumb is a shot glass full for your whole body and two fingers' length of sunscreen just for your face. And no, the SPF in makeup alone isn't enough. You'd need to apply a lot more than is practical to reach that level of protection. What does non-comedogenic mean? Non-comedogenic means that a product is formulated not to clog pores, writes Sophie Beresiner. For a sunscreen, this is especially important since the formula is less likely to cause breakouts, blackheads, or acne, making it a better choice for people with sensitive, reactive, oily, or acne-prone skin. Non-comedogenic sunscreens tend to have a lighter texture and avoid pore-blocking ingredients like heavy oils or certain silicones.
