Anwar meets US defence secretary to discuss boosting security ties

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today received a courtesy call from US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth during his brief working visit to Singapore. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the meeting touched on efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of defence and maritime security, Bernama reported. Anwar also thanked the US for participating in the recent Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025. During the same visit, the prime minister also received a courtesy call from Boeing global president Brendan Nelson. 'We took the opportunity to discuss maritime security, asset modernisation and investment in education. 'We also explored collaboration with local industry players in training, strategic cooperation and the development of the maintenance, repair and overhaul ecosystem.' Anwar was in Singapore to attend the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue, a prestigious regional security and defence summit for the Asia-Pacific region.

The meeting, held today in Abu Dhabi and attended by Sheikha Saeed Al Kaabi, FNC member, emphasised the growing role of parliamentary diplomacy in supporting the UAE's national strategies and advancing its global partnerships. The discussions covered prospects for strengthening cooperation in key areas such as advanced technology, artificial intelligence, investment in startups, and renewable energy. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments, stressing the importance of political and diplomatic solutions to address current global challenges. Dr. Al Nuaimi reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to a path of sustainable development that benefits both the region and its people. Ambassador Floren expressed Sweden's keen interest in expanding cooperation with the UAE across multiple sectors. He also praised the UAE's open policy and its success in building strategic regional and international partnerships.

Kuwait had stopped issuing visas to citizens of Pakistan, Iran, Syria and Afghanistan, citing difficult security conditions in the countries. It was also decided during the meeting that Kuwait would issue technical visas for Pakistani workers in the medical and oil fields. Pakistan's ambassador to Kuwait Dr. Zaffar Iqbal issued a statement on the resumption of visas. 'Community members have already begun receiving approvals, marking a positive step forward,' he said. Separately, the ambassador said Pakistan and Kuwait were in the advanced stages of finalizing a new labor memorandum of understanding (MoU). Pakistan established diplomatic relations with Kuwait in October 1963.

SINGAPORE : Malaysia has been an energetic and effective Asean chair, says Singapore's prime minister, Lawrence Wong. Wong, who is in Malaysia until Tuesday for the 46th Asean Summit and related summits, said Singapore will continue to work closely with Malaysia to advance Asean integration efforts. 'Caught up with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the Asean Summit. I congratulated him on chairing a successful summit,' he posted on Facebook. Both leaders also took stock of various bilateral issues, he said. Wong said he looked forward to welcoming Anwar to Singapore later this week at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier defence summit. Anwar is scheduled to deliver a special address at the dialogue, which will be held from May 30 to June 1. In a separate post, Wong said he had a fruitful meeting with Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto on the sidelines of the summit. He said they discussed global and regional developments as well as the importance of a strong and united Asean in these turbulent times. 'We also look forward to closer bilateral cooperation. The longstanding relationship between Singapore and Indonesia has served as an anchor of stability against geopolitical headwinds,' he said. Muscat: HH Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, on Monday received Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as part of his official visit to the Sultanate of Oman. HH Sayyid Fahd welcomed the guest and his accompanying delegation. At the outset of the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan expressed his honour to have an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik—and the positive outcomes it would yield in terms of consultations and the exchange of visions, further strengthening the close ties between the two countries. HH Sayyid Fahd affirmed that the bilateral relations between the two countries are strong and continuously evolving for the interest of the two peoples. The meeting reviewed means of boosting cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates in various fields, in addition to addressing some developments at the regional and international arenas. The meeting was attended by HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth.
