Rare ‘black moon' will drift over Aussie skies
A black moon will be visible in Australian skies later this month for the first time since early 2023.
On August 23rd, the rare phenomenon will occur as the moon drifts across Australian skies.
A black moon can occur in two separate instances; a second new moon in the same calendar month, or a third new moon during an astronomical season which usually has four new moons.
Black moons only come around once every 29 months, or two and a half years, and are extremely difficult to see with the naked eye.
Black moons appear whenever the moon is directly obscured by planet Earth from the sun, turning it completely dark.
For anybody hoping to catch a glimpse, it will be incredibly difficult and likely only show itself by way of obscuring small patches of stars as it floats by them.
