Remains Found at San Diego Beach Identified as Belonging to 10-Year-Old Girl Who Went Missing When Boat Capsized Off the Coast
Remains recently found on a San Diego beach have been identified by officials as belonging to 10-year-old Mahi Brijeshkumar Patel The preteen went missing when a boat carrying her family and several others overturned off the coast earlier this month Patel died in the accident two days before her birthdayRemains found on a San Diego beach have been identified by officials as belonging to 10-year-old Mahi Brijeshkumar Patel, who went missing when a boat carrying her family and several others overturned off the coast of San Diego earlier this month. On May 21, a passerby at Torrey Pines State Beach found the remains and contacted authorities, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. Now, officials revealed that the body parts were those of Mahi. "Her parents were notified of DNA testing confirming that the remains belonged to the decedent," the Medical Examiner's Office said. The identification came over two weeks after a panga boat carrying Mahi and her family overturned on May 5 — just two days after the preteen's birthday. Mahi was initially "reported missing from the boat at that time and could not be found," per the Medical Examiner's Office. California State Parks is continuing to investigate the girl's death. Her official cause and manner of death are pending, the Medical Examiner's Office said. According to The Los Angeles Times, four people died and multiple others were missing after the boat overturned. Authorities were notified that the boat capsized near Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego at around 6:30 a.m. local time, a Coast Guard official told CBS News at the time. NBC News reported that authorities believed the people onboard the panga were migrants. Mahi's 14-year-old brother Prince Brijeshkumar Patel's cause of death was determined to be accidental drowning, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. Marcos Lozada-Juarez, 18, was identified as another victim who was traveling on the small fishing boat, the office added. His cause of death was also accidental drowning. Authorities searched 520 square nautical miles for the missing girl for eight hours before suspending search operations and presuming her dead, per SFGATE. KFMB previously reported that there was rain when the boat capsized, and the waves were rocky and harsh. Officials later discovered towels, life vests and shoes in the boat. The family was from India, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of California. The children's father was in a coma following the boat capsizing, while their mother was also hospitalized. The office announced on May 6 that Julio Cesar Zuniga Luna and Jesus Juan Rodriguez Leyva were charged with "bringing in aliens resulting in death" and "bringing in aliens for financial gain." Border patrol agents later located a vehicle in Chula Vista that was "observed at the scene" on May 5, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The driver fled, while agents "identified two other vehicles that were involved in the smuggling event." They then charged three people — Melissa Jenelle Cota, Gustavo Lara and Sergio Rojas-Fregosa — with "transportation of illegal aliens," per the office. 'Human smuggling, regardless of the route, is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. Smugglers often treat people as disposable commodities, leading to tragic and sometimes deadly consequences, as we saw in this case,' special agent Shawn Gibson of HSI San Diego said in a statement at the time. 'Yesterday's heartbreaking events are a stark reminder of the urgent need to dismantle these criminal networks driven by greed. The HSI, along with the U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, and other partners from the Marine Task Force, remains firmly committed to holding those responsible accountable for these senseless deaths," he added. Police find boat of Texas parents and two kids who went missing in Alaska a year ago
Nearly a year after a Texas family went missing on a boat in Alaska, the authorities in the state have found their vessel submerged off the coast in 180ft of water. The Alaska Department of Public Safety announced on Wednesday that authorities located the family's boat and potential human remains in early May. The tragic update comes after David Maynard, 42, Mary Maynard, 37, and their sons Colton, 11, and Brantley, 8, disappeared at sea last August. The family of four was on board a 28ft aluminum vessel with four others when it began taking in water. The other four others were rescued from a life raft, but the family was on board the ship when it capsized and sank in the freezing Alaskan waters. A massive search ensued, led by the Coast Guard and Alaska Wildlife Troopers. The authorities used helicopters and sonar equipment to find the family, but the search was suspended the following evening. An update came in April when Support Vessels of Alaska, Vision Subsea, and Benthic Geoscience contacted the Alaska Wildlife Troopers with additional resources to assist in the search, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety. 'In early May, the group was able to locate the vessel in 180 feet of water and utilizing a remotely operated vehicle, they were able to positively identify it as the missing boat with potential human remains onboard,' the Alaska Department of Public Safety said. After the companies located the sunken ship, divers conducted operations to recover the remains on board. There were three sets of remains found that have been transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office to confirm the identities. The family had been presumed dead after search efforts were suspended last year. At a presumptive death hearing in September, one of the survivors spoke and tearfully recalled the moment the boat began to sink, audio obtained by local NBC affiliate, KCEN-TV revealed. 'They were just gone,' one survivor recounted. 'It had to have been, I mean it was 10 minutes, maybe 10 minutes from us having fun to the boat - the boat rolled like this, tipped on its side and then the engines went down and just the nose up,' she added. The captain of the boat said that the engine had sputtered, and he anchored the vessel after seeing another fishing boat nearby. 'At one point, David asked me, got my attention, and he pointed to the back corner of the deck where there was a drain hole for water that would come up, get on deck,' the captain said. 'He pointed to it and he said, "Is that normal?" and I said "no."' The captain, who wasn't identified, said that he tried to fire up the engine, but it wouldn't start. David then tried to use the radio to call for help. When help arrived, the four survivors had escaped, but the Maynards didn't make it off the capsized boat. A ship called the Salty Sea rescued the survivors, and the ship's captain said their rescuers, 'asked if there was anybody else, and I told him there were, but they didn't make it out of the boat'. The jury determined that the family of four died as a result of accidental drowning. The family from Troy, Texas, had been on vacation in Alaska at the time. Appeal: A GoFundMe said the family 'left a huge imprint on many people, from the laughter they brought to us, the love and family-oriented connection they provided' A family friend told the Anchorage Daily News at the time that their sons, Colton and Brantley, both played soccer and baseball. Mary worked as a traveling nurse, and David had a lawn care business and stayed home with the kids. A fundraiser was set up to support the family on GoFundMe, and raised over $21,500. It said on the site: 'The Maynards left a huge imprint on many people, from the laughter they brought to us, the love and family-oriented connection they provided. It is indescribable the void that will be left behind but I know if we come together as a family and a community they would know how much they meant to everyone.'

Boat capsizes on arrival at Spain's Canary Islands; seven women, girls die
Four women and three girls have died when a small boat carrying dozens of refugees and migrants capsized while approaching the port at one of Spain's Canary Islands, according to Spanish emergency services. Local media reports said the small vessel seemed to be packed on Wednesday with more than 100 people. Spanish rescuers and members of the Red Cross pulled people out of the water. Red Cross spokesman Alexis Ramos told broadcaster RTVE there could be 'more than 100 people' on the boat but he was unable to provide a figure for the number of those missing. Spain's maritime rescue service said the boat tipped over as rescuers began removing minors after it had arrived at a dock on the island of El Hierro. The service had initially located the boat about 10km (6 miles) from shore. The sudden movement of people on the boat caused it to tip and then turn over, dumping the occupants into the water, the service said. Canary Islands emergency services said four women, a teenage girl and two younger girls died in the accident. A helicopter evacuated two more children, a girl and a boy, to a local hospital in critical condition after they nearly drowned, the service added. The Spanish archipelago located off Africa's western coast has for years been a main route for refugees and migrants who risk their lives in dinghies and rubber boats unfit for long journeys in the open sea. Thousands have died on the way to European territory on a treacherous journey from Africa over the Atlantic Ocean. Nearly 47,000 people who made the crossing last year reached the Canary Islands. Most were citizens of Mali, Senegal and Morocco with many boarding boats to Spain from the coast of Mauritania. The arrivals include thousands of unaccompanied children.

Speeding boat flips over near sandbar on Colorado River, 5 people hospitalized
Five people were hospitalized after their boat flipped over near a sandbar on the Colorado River over Memorial Day weekend, officials confirmed on Monday. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said its marine enforcement unit was dispatched to the boat accident at 5:07 p.m. on Saturday. Crews arrived at the area of the river near Blankenship Bend to find several people suffering injuries and the overturned boat floating in shallow water. 'According to witnesses, the boat was traveling at a high rate of speed during a turning movement and the port sponson caught a chine causing the boat to flip over,' detailed the department's release. The driver of the boat and a female passenger each sustained major injuries, and the other three passengers were transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. Officials said the boat operator was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and the female passenger was taken to University Medical Center, both in Nevada. The names, ages and genders of the passengers were not immediately provided. The sheriff's department said the incident is currently under investigation, but that 'it appears speed was a factor in the accident.' Sport fishing boat violently crashes into Meschutt Beach jetty, injuring four
FIRST ON FOX: A video of a large sport fishing boat shows what appears to be the aftermath of a violent crash into a jetty in Meschutt Beach. The accident occurred at approximately 9:16 p.m. when eyewitnesses say a vessel hit the jetty so hard that it spun 180 degrees before running aground. The operator apparently steered the craft from the Great Peconic Bay towards the Shinnecock Canal. Four passengers reportedly suffered injuries and one of whom, an adult female, was flown from the scene to Stony Brook Hospital by the Suffolk County Police Department. Two other juveniles were transported by ambulance and the fourth, an adult male, was taken to a local hospital. A video of the aftermath of the accident shows what appears to be an adult male being questioned and possibly detained, as country music plays loudly in the background and the windshield wipers swish back and forth. Hampton Bays FD, Southampton Town PD, the US Coast Guard, and NYS Police were all on scene. This is an ongoing investigation. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Hampton Bays Fire Department, but they have not immediately responded.
