Family of child killed in boat crash brings inspirational message to B.C. track meet

A photo of Lionel Hall, who was killed last month in a boat crash, was displayed at a B.C. track meet where his parents and sister honoured his memory. The family of a 10-year-old boy who lost his life in a speed boat crash near Cates Park in North Vancouver took part in a ceremony to honour him at the BC Athletics Junior Development Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Lionel Hall died after being hit by the speed boat while tubing in Burrard Inlet in June. Another child, who was also tubing, was seriously injured. Lionel's sister Abigail took part in races at South Surrey Athletic Park and was happy the event allowed her family to honour her little brother's life. 'He was really funny. He had a great sense of humour,' Abigail told CTV News. Lionel's father, Jason said if not for the tragedy that took his life, his son would have been a competitor at the event. 'He just always wanted to be better, and he knew being at the championships was always a great marker to set for himself so he could always take that next step and improve,' Hall said. The family took time Saturday to address all the young athletes taking part in the track meet. 'We're just going to have a few moments in memory of Lionel's contribution here and hopefully inspire other kids to live big for Lionel,' said Shelley Klassen, Lionel's mom. The RCMP are investigating speed and alcohol as contributing factors in the boat crash that killed Lionel. The operator of the boat that crashed into the inner tube with the children on it was arrested at the scene but later released. So far, no charges have been laid.

San Bernardino County deputy arrested for deadly boat crash on Colorado River

A San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputy was arrested on Friday for a deadly boat crash on the Colorado River while allegedly intoxicated. The crash happened a little after 5:30 p.m. on Friday just south of the Needles Bridge on the river in Needles, according to a news release from SBSD. "A 22-foot Cheetah deck boat, operated by Bruce Southworth, was traveling downriver when it impacted an 18-foot Sanger vessel that was adrift on the river," the release said. The crash left the victim, 38-year-old La Verne resident Weston Stewart, with major injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died, deputies said. "Alcohol appears to be a factor in this incident," SBSD said. Southworth, of Yucaipa, was arrested at the scene and booked for negligent use of a watercraft while intoxicated causing injury. On Saturday, department officials confirmed that Southworth is a deputy and that he has been placed on administrative leave as a result of the crash. They say that the investigation remains ongoing and that any additional information will be provided to the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office. It's unclear if there were any other injuries in the collision. In 2017, Southworth was one of six San Bernardino first responders awarded the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor by President Donald Trump for their response to the 2015 workplace shooting that left 14 people dead. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact SBSD at (760) 326-9200.

Boater charged after crashing into and ‘seriously' injuring swimmer: OPP

Provincial police are investigating a boat crash in Muskoka Lakes Township on Saturday that resulted in a boater getting charged and a swimmer getting hospitalized. According to Bracebridge OPP, officers and emergency services received several calls just before 5 p.m. about a collision on Skeleton Lake near Skeleton Lake Road 5. The callers reported that a boat crashed into a swimmer and people on shore managed to bring the swimmer out of the water. Police say emergency services responded quickly to the scene and the 22-year-old male swimmer from Georgina was eventually airlifted to a Toronto hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers then located and arrested the boater, a 39-year-old man from Niagara Falls. He was charged with impaired operation causing bodily harm, failing to stop at an accident causing bodily harm, refusing to comply with a demand, and failing to comply with a release order. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing on Sunday. 'Impaired driving continues to be a significant factor affecting the safety of Muskoka roads,' repeated Const. Samantha Bigley from Bracebridge OPP in a media release. 'If you suspect someone is driving a vehicle of any kind while impaired, please call 9-1-1.' Perpetrators face the same fines for impaired boating as they do for impaired driving.
