EXCLUSIVE The red carpet rulebook is out! Reality TV stars are rewriting conservative fashion rules at award shows - and proving less is more with daring styles

Awards season once saw actresses and singers descending on red carpets in traditional ballgowns fit for a Disney princess. However, the integration of reality TV stars and influencers at the glitzy events in the UK's capital, such as the BAFTAs and Brit Awards, has changed the dress code. Instead of formal dresses with big skirts and even bigger trains, a new generation of bold and daring women are embracing sheer, clingy or risqué cut-out ensembles more than ever before. In the past few months alone, Love Island alum Maura Higgins wore one of her raciest looks yet at the Brit Awards. The 34-year-old looked flawless in a sheer black gown, leaving her figure on full display. At the same event, Louise Thompson, known for starring in Made in Chelsea and, more recently, the He Said, She Said podcast, arrived in a striking baby blue dress which featured a plunging neckline. Then, at the BAFTA 's earlier this week, Love Island's Gabby Allen took a leaf out of Maura's book and arrived in a sparkling next-to-nothing navy mesh ensemble, revealing her underwear. Following closely behind was one of the nation's favourite podcasters, Sophie Habboo, who looked elegant in a bandeau dress with a thigh-high split and cut-out bustier. So, what's behind the change? Fashion expert and personal stylist Lisa Talbot believes the stars are not just sporting daring outfits but 'making statements about body confidence, individuality, and modern femininity'. Talbot said: 'Award season used to be a showcase of classic glamour, floor-sweeping gowns, modest silhouettes, and red-carpet tradition. But today's reality TV stars are rewriting the style rules with daring confidence.' Indeed, in the past, celebrities have attended ceremonies in traditional dresses, such as Penélope Cruz's fishtail gown at the 2007 BAFTAs, the year she was nominated for Best Actress for Volver. Modesty was still on trend three years later when 19-year-old Kristen Stewart scooped the Rising Star award at the 2010 BAFTAs in a knee-length sequin-embellished gown. It was a similar scene at past Brit Awards, with musicians arriving in modest high-fashion ensembles. Take, for instance, Rihanna at the 2011 ceremony, who caught the eye in a bold gown with a purple patterned bodice and voluminous aqua skirt all tied together with a green sash. Then, at 2018's event, Dua Lipa was dressed for her fairytale moment when she donned a sweeping pink princess gown. The voluminous garment featured swathes of tulle and ruffles that skimmed over her and formed a large train. At today's award shows, reality TV stars are on the guest list with actresses and singers. While they're not competing for accolades, they are fighting for the title of best dressed and have pushed boundaries to stand out. Lisa continued: 'Figures like Sophie Habboo, Louise Thompson, and Gabby Allen are stepping out in body-conscious cut-outs, sheer panels, and thigh-high slits, redefining what 'dressed up' looks like. Sophie Habboo, pictured, looked elegant in a bandeau dress with a thigh-high split and cut-out bustier at the BAFTAs earlier this year 'These women aren't just making fashion choices, they're making statements about body confidence, individuality, and modern femininity,' she said. 'This new wave of red-carpet dressing reflects the fearless attitude reality stars are known for. 'They're unapologetically embracing their personal style, pushing the boundaries of formalwear and showing that less can, in fact, be more,' she said. Among those trailblazing the low-cut looks that are now sweeping star-studded events, is Love Island star, Ekin Su, who wore an exceptionally low-neckline while attending the premiere for Tom Hardy's film, Venom, last October. The reality star strut onto the celebrity packed red carpet wearing jaw-dropping black gown that revealed her ample cleavage. Lisa explained: 'While some critics may raise eyebrows, there's no denying their influence: the red carpet is no longer reserved for safe elegance, it's a space for bold, expressive fashion that reflects today's cultural shift toward authenticity and self-celebration.' However, that's not to say the new trend is having it's say with everyone in the world. Organisers at this year's Cannes Film Festival made a conscious decision to issue a rule on modesty, prohibiting guests from displaying both nudity and excessively voluminous outfits on grounds of 'decency'. Cannes red carpet, which has previously paved the catwalk for the likes of Cameron Diaz, Kylie Minogue, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, has seen it's guests grow barer over the years as A-listers move towards embracing more risqué looks. In 2024, model Bella Hadid famously strut the runway baring all in a sheer green Saint Laurent dress, her nipples conspicuous beneath the thin fabric. However - following the traditional lead this year, celebrities have obligingly opted for more more modest looks. Arriving for the opening ceremony on Tuesday, Halle Berry sported a black and white striped gown pulled up to the top of her neck that flowed all the way down to her feet, an ensemble that seemed a far cry from the more frugal fashion pairings that have dominated the runway recently. Additionally, Russian model Irina, 39, put on a show-stopping display in a strapless feather gown as she struck a pose on the iconic red steps, nevertheless, in-keeping with the modest theme. Back on British soil, many of the nation's best loved celebrities, including Holly Willoughby and Suzanne Reid, have steadfast held to traditional runway looks - a stark contrast to their reality TV contemporaries. Last year's National Television Awards saw Holly donning an elegant strapless silver and black dress from luxury couture brand Kolchagov Barba, with the most daring component being a tasteful high leg slit. Joining her in-keeping with more traditional red carpet robes was ITV presenter, Cat Deeley, who stepped out in simple silk red one-shoulder midi dress with gold strappy heels. At the same event though, reality stars proved once again their willingness to push the boundaries with edgier costumes, with Made in Chelsea alum, Zara McDermott flashing her lower cleavage in busty black number. Meanwhile, former Love Island contestant Molly Smith also opted for a more daring look, baring her bust in a similar black dress featuring a waist-enhancing corset and an ultra-low neckline.

I'm a ‘woman of a certain age' with an embarrassing body secret

I'm a woman in her 60s with all the usual body confidence issues, even though I know I've got admirably supple and blemish-free skin for someone my age (some stretch marks on the love handles, aside). My divorced friend Harriet (same age) is enjoying a new lease of life, and wants to go on a booze cruise/Milfs-on-tour-type holiday to Spain this summer with all the girls (none of us under 55). She's I'm now trying to come to terms with being expected to wear a bikini at my post-menopausal age. Weight and stretch marks I can probably get over – and the hair removal has taken care of itself since I gave up HRT – but there's one big problem: a third nipple located equidistant between the bra and bikini lines that my husband's private health insurance won't stretch to having removed. Last year, these girls named my birthday WhatsApp group ' tripple nipple gizzle '(a reference to my real name) and I'm still fuming. I sweat too much in the heat for a swim garment that'll cover the offending teat, but Harriet is more fragile than she seems and I think would have an episode if I backed out. What would you do? Neurotic about nipples Dear Neurotic about nipples, The possibility that your letter may have been written in jest crossed my mind – not because I think the subject matter is funny, but because it has everything you could possibly want from a well written, well thought out letter to an agony aunt: older women on a new Shirley Valentine -style lease of life as 'Milfs' in Magaluf; a wayward friend, Harriet – with a touch of neurosis – who scrimps and saves to get you all to the beach bar, most likely wearing tassels ... and a third nipple. You really couldn't make it up. And if you did, it would make a damn good screenplay. With the best will in the world and lots of faith, I'm going to answer you straight. Because whether it is tongue-in-cheek, exaggerated or entirely genuine, there's absolutely loads we can learn from your question – and a hell of a lot that women 'of a certain age' (to paraphrase a certain disgraced TV presenter) can take away. Let's do the medical bit first: for anyone concerned or wondering, a 'third nipple' is surprisingly common. It's also known as a supernumerary nipple and usually develops in the womb – in other words, you're born with it. They can look like small skin tags or moles or they can be a little larger and even have areola around them, or even breast tissue. There's nothing you can do about them, except have surgery to remove them. But most of the time, unless it causes you serious anxiety or irritates you in other ways, I really wouldn't bother. They're usually entirely harmless, although (as you would with any other mark on your body, such as a mole) I would keep your eye on it and go to your GP if you notice any changes. Around 200,000 people in the US are thought to have a third nipple, but incidences vary according to ethnicity, sex and geography, not to mention awareness, reporting and detection. There aren't any conclusive studies or statistics telling us precisely how many people are born with the condition each year, so nobody really knows for sure how many people have them – but we do know that some people have them. And if you do have one, you're in good company – Mark Wahlberg, Tilda Swinton, Lily Allen and Bill Paxton have all reportedly got them; as did Matthew Perry's character Chandler Bing in Friends. Now, don't you feel special? You should – or, to put it another way, you shouldn't feel weird about it. I'm willing to bet that nobody would ever look at you on the beach and zone in on your third nipple, unless they were extremely close up. And those that are likely to be that close to you are people who care about you – your husband, Harriet, the other 'Milfs on tour'. I promise that none of them will bat an eyelid. They wouldn't care if you had a third head (or notice that you did, after a sangria or three). The only person, in other words, who's worrying about your body is, well, you. And while I'm not diminishing or invalidating those worries, I do think there's a lot to be said for letting that kind of crippling, microscopic self-consciousness go once we reach our forties, fifties and sixties. I bet we all spent far too much time in our teens and twenties – and probably our thirties, too – worrying about what we looked like, or panicking because we didn't feel we had the 'perfect' beach-ready body. To hell with that. Surely one of the benefits of age is that you can look back at photos of yourself when you were younger, and say: What the hell was I so worried about? I was gorgeous! You'll do exactly the same 10 years from now and beyond – I can guarantee it. As for now – and this summer – you sound fun and confident and charismatic and bold and independent and fiery. Go forth and conquer Magaluf, Ibiza or Benidorm – don't hide yourself away (and if you really can't bear/bare it, try a striking swimsuit). There's a reason there's a campaign called Free the Nipple. It's time to free yourself from fretting about yours.

Ex EastEnders star shows off ‘loose skin, belly overhang and saggy breasts' after health battle

AN ex EastEnders star has shown off her 'loose skin, belly overhang and saggy breasts' after her health battle. Former EastEnders star turned body confidence advocate Melissa Suffield took to social media to share an update with her 153,000 followers. 6 6 6 6 Sitting in a pink bikini, Melissa shared various unedited pictures, and revealed her 'stretch marks' and 'bloating' among other things. She captioned the candid post: 'Want a bikini body this summer? Just put a bikini on- there you have it! A perfect bikini body, full of beautiful imperfections. 'Because imperfections are gorgeous, unique, and interesting- just like YOU. That body you're always trying to hide? Way more normal than you think. That woman over there probably feels the same way about hers. In fact she's probably too busy worrying about her own to even glance your way. 'Get that bikini, put it on, slam your body down and wind it all around- and truly, a zig a zig ah.' Melissa was praised by fans for being so honest and body confident, as one person wrote:' Yay to celebrating the bikini body... Great post.' And a second added: ' Fantastic how you show up as you are! X' She shared a photo of her bikini top and wrote over it 'empty post baby tatas,' as well as sharing a photo of her 'belly overhang' while sitting upright. Other images included the star revealing her 'thighs that tough,' and 'silver stretch marks.' Melissa, 31, was diagnosed with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) after experiencing "horrible nausea" on December 16 2023, with her having felt nauseous "ever since". Former EastEnders star has had '40 doctors appointments' and spent 'over five figures' amid gruelling health condition After around 40 appointments with her GP and spending more than five figures on tests and other medical costs, Melissa has a diagnosis of SIBO, B12 deficiency, and is still yet to work out the root cause of it all. Melissa experiences nausea, reflux, constipation, and other symptoms like her hair falling out and suffering from dry skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition occurs "when there is an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine — particularly types of bacteria not commonly found in that part of the digestive tract." Symptoms are listed as a loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, an uncomfortable feeling of fullness after eating, diarrhea, unintentional weight loss, and malnutrition. The former soap star who played Lucy Beale from 2004 until 2010 has opened up about how SIBO impacts her and how she is now less healthy than she was a year ago, despite being slimmer now, with her keen to raise awareness of the chronic illness. Melissa told us in our exclusive chat that her health condition is "very frustrating", but noted a silver lining of sorts. "Obviously, I've lost quite a lot of weight this year," Melissa began, adding: "But absolutely none of that has been through choice. None of it. Like I'm back in my pre-pregnancy jeans." She added: "But there's no joy," noting: "I don't enjoy the fact that that's happened at all in the way that you know, that's like a goal for a lot of people. "A) It was never a goal for me. But B) this is the complete antithesis of whatever I've ever wanted with my body. "So that's been tricky for sure. And then also, just on top of that, like my skin and my hair has been like affected. "Now I'm dealing with feelings of, you know, not enjoying the way that I look, which is frustrating because I've done such a lot of work to get me to a place where." Revealing the silver lining of sorts, Melissa revealed that her weight loss proves that being slim does not equate to being healthy. 6 6

Bikini-clad Natasha Hamilton, 42, says she had to learn to 'accept' her body again after the birth of her fifth child: 'I felt like a stranger in my own skin'

Natasha Hamilton opened up about her struggles with body confidence since the birth of her fifth child in a candid social media post. The Atomic Kitten star, 42, welcomed her daughter Kitty with husband Charles Gay in August 2023. She is also mum to Josh, 22, Harry, 20, Alfie, 14, and Ella, 10, from previous relationships. Taking to Instagram on Monday, the pop star showed off her figure in a green bikini as she posed with a cocktail in her hand during a trip to Ibiza. Opening up about self acceptance, she penned: 'If you've followed me for a while, your kids are probably grown up now… so you might not remember that wild transition from having a baby to trying to feel like yourself again. 'Honestly? I've felt like I've been in a dark hole for years. Lost, exhausted, and searching for the woman I used to be. Taking to Instagram, the pop star showed opened up about her struggles with self love and acceptance 'This year forced me to slow down and ask myself what I really want. And the answer was simple: to be happy. But when you're a stress-head, a worrier, and a recovering control freak, happiness can feel just out of reach. 'Therapy helps. So does talking honestly about the tough bits. 'After my fifth baby, my body was worn out. An emergency op after Kitty's birth shook me to my core. I smiled through it all, but I didn't feel like me. I didn't feel strong or sexy. I felt like a stranger in my own skin.' She continued: 'Shooting 'Edge of Us' should've felt empowering, but I was swollen, self-conscious, and trying too hard to fake confidence. It broke something in me and started a slow journey back to wholeness. 'It's not about body shape. It's about belonging. About acceptance. 'At my husband's event in Ibiza, surrounded by bikini babes half my age, I kept my cover-up on the whole time. 'And you know what? That's okay. I wasn't quite ready then. But I'm getting there.' 'Every day, I practice loving who I am. Not just Mama Bear. But Hot Mama too,' Natasha added. Over the years Natasha has been fairly transparent over what she has had done to her face, admitting to Botox, lip filler and laser treatment. In a pictured she shared on Instagram earlier this year, the star's changed appearance caught the attention from her fans as some admitted they couldn't even recognise her. According to cosmetic expert Dr Ross Perry of skin clinics chain Cosmedics, Natasha appears to have undergone multiple different treatments - some which she hasn't admitted too. Dr Perry said: 'It looks as though Natasha has had dermal fillers to her cheeks and lip areas to create the more fuller effect that we can see in the latest images. 'It also looks like she potentially has had what's called a lip lift, where the upper part of the lip area is lifted up by removing a small amount of skin under the nose. 'Potentially some rhinoplasty too where the bridge of the nose has been trimmed, as well as the tip of the nose, and possibly some eyelid surgery to help remove some of the eyelid heaviness. 'There is also the use of eyebrow tattooing and most likely Botox as well, to create a smooth complexion.' It comes after Natasha reflected on her personal life in a rare interview and said her past love splits have led to the 'sickest, darkest feelings she's ever felt in her life'. But she said there is something incredible about 'learning from her bad decisions' and learning about how to fend for herself. Appearing on My Dirty Laundry podcast last June, she said: 'We're a blended family and sometimes I feel like people can't fathom how you can make something work that from the outside looking in, that looks different or chaotic. 'They just they can't comprehend what they don't know, but I'm sat here with five incredible children and my life has continued and flourished and got better, despite the traumas that I've been through in my personal life. 'Did I ever want any of that? Of course I didn't! God, you must be mad! Like, to ever wish any of that upon you - but I can't live in the past. 'I'm never going say I wish that didn't happen. I'm not going to wish my life away. Everything has made me the woman who I am today. 'I'm probably more accepting than most people are because I have been through a lot. I do not judge someone because of their circumstance. Absolutely not. 'I judge people how they treat me. You know, how you show respect to people, like they're the important things.'
