Three-alarm brush fire scorches Oakland Hills
The Brief The fire broke out just after 9 p.m. in the area of Skyline Boulevard and Grass Valley Road. Crews managed to stop progress of the fire about an hour later. Firefighters will remain on scene overnight to fully extinguish the blaze. OAKLAND, Calif. - A brush fire scorched a hillside in Oakland on Saturday night, prompting a large, multi-agency response as officials gathered to combat the blaze. The fire was initially reported to be a two-alarm event and was reported to be burning in the area of Skyline Boulevard and Grass Valley Road in the Chabot Park neighborhood – about two miles east of the Oakland Zoo – just after 9 p.m., according to the Oakland Fire Department. The brusher was quickly upgraded to a three-alarm fire, and more than 50 firefighters were deployed to deal with flames in about 150 square feet of brush that were burning at a slow rate of speed, the OFD told KTVU. No buildings were reported to be threatened by the flames. OFD Chief Damon Covington told KTVU that ground units worked quickly to get the blaze contained. "Crews have done a fantastic job of really getting to the head of the fire and getting control of the fire," he said. Cal Fire, East Bay Regional Park District and Oakland Police Department units assisted in the response. Forward progress of the brush fire was halted by about 10:10 p.m., and roughly 60 firefighters at the scene managed to surround the blaze, the OFD said. Covington told KTVU that firefighters would likely remain on the scene throughout the night to completely extinguish the fire and mop up any lingering hot spots. "We are on the verge of fire season," Covington said. "We're ready to go, our team is ready to go. And this was an example of it."

Eureka Fire: Several roads closed in Joshua Tree National Park due to wildfire
A brush fire that broke out on Friday in Joshua Tree National Park has grown to over 200 acres, resulting in several road closures as firefighters work to contain the blaze over the weekend. The Eureka Fire, reported around noon on Friday, is located 3 miles northeast of Eureka Peak in the Lower Covington Flats area. Firefighters had the 212-acre fire 40% contained as of Saturday morning, the park said in a news release. Areas that are temporarily closed while firefighters work to contain the fire: Lower Covington Flats Road and La Contenta within the park boundary; Backcountry camping in the zones covering Black Rock, Covington, Quail Wash and Juniper, California Riding and Hiking Trail starting in Black Rock; Creosote/Bigfoot Trail starting off Park Boulevard. Several agencies are responding and worked overnight to manage the blaze, including the Bureau of Land Management, Cal Fire, U.S. Forest Service, and San Bernardino County Sheriff and Fire Protection. Firefighters contained a 4-acre slop over fire, which refers to a fire that crossed the containment line, in the morning, the park said. The park said fresh crews will be working on containing the fire during the day, which will be warmer at nearly 86 degrees with 5 to 10 miles per hour south-southwest winds and gusts up to 20 mph. The equipment they'll be using include 11 engines, two water tenders two hand crews, and one helicopter. Joshua Tree National Park said it does not know what caused the fire to break out and that it will be under investigation. This is a developing story. As of late Saturday morning, the blaze had scorched 300 acres. As the fire spreads, more evacuation orders and warnings are being issued, including for a portion of southwest Riverside County. The areas in Riverside County under evacuation warnings (which indicate a potential threat to life and/or property) include several neighborhoods south of Temecula: Oak Haven Estates Parts of the Pechanga Reservation Rural portions of the Agua Tibia Wilderness Additionally, several local road closures are in place as hundreds of firefighters work to contain the brush fire. Fire burns 5 acres in Moses Lake Monday
May 27—MOSES LAKE — Monday evening, around 5 p.m., the Moses Lake Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire near State Route 17 and North Stratford Road. "We came in at five o'clock, and we responded with a battalion chief, a fire engine, three brush trucks, two medic units, and we called for mutual aid from Grant County Fire District 5," MLFD Interim Fire Administrator Mike Ganz said. "They sent us a tender and a brush truck." The fire was around an acre large when MLFD arrived, Ganz said. However, due to the winds, it grew to around five acres of land. Crews left the scene at around 10 p.m. Monday after containing the fire and completing mop-up. There were no injuries or structures threatened, Ganz said. "A real conservative estimate is that they used probably about 30,000 gallons of water to get it out," Ganz said. Ganz said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time and it is unlikely an investigation will be pursued because of a lack of leads. "It's my understanding that that's in the area where the fire started. That's just a really tough one," Ganz said. "So, it's just a cause unknown at this time. I mean if someone had seen something that was suspicious, then we probably would go to that next level. But at this point, it's just an unknown source, and it could be anything from a spark from the railroad tracks or the road, or somebody that was in that area, but without any more information, we're just going with an unknown source." Ganz said this blaze marked the beginning of their busy season. "This will be a busy season," Ganz said. "As the weather gets hotter and fuel starts to dry out, we have a lot of grass areas and brush areas, and so we're very active in the summer with brush fires within the city limits, as well as giving mutual aid outside into the county." He said he feels confident going into the upcoming fire season, though. "We've just spent the last month training all our folks to the red card level, which is their updates on all their brush fire, wildland fire training," Ganz said. "We're anticipating that this is the season that it gets really active, and so we've done our planning, and we're prepared for it. This is a perfect example of the kind of response that we can give when a fire like this occurs in the city." Ganz said he wants to remind people to be mindful of fire with the upcoming Grant County burn ban about to go into effect. He said that although the county is placing its burn ban, it is not legal to burn within Moses Lake city limits, year-round. "Open burning in the city is not allowed, whereas in the county, it is, but then they restrict it during the summer months," Ganz said. "Just tell people to not start any fires and we should be good."
